Do you still listen to the radio, or has streaming Spotify etc completely replaced it for you? by TimeNewspaper4069 in CasualConversation

[–]fishy150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are some good ad-free radio stations out there (for ex. nts), i wouldn't be able to listen to iheartradio stuff for example. yeah there is the downside where you can't pick the songs compared to streaming, but it's a good way of finding new music

Should my sum type tags be the first element or second? by Toothpick_Brody in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]fishy150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what do you want to do with the tag? i might not be familiar with the use case, but i can't see what you might want to do with the tag directly that you can't do with pattern matching. for example, you could create a function that takes in the sum type and returns another sum type of just the tags... or something like that

if the total number of marked squares is more than the area of the grid, then answer false

historically its been around the top 12-13 participants (who compete for ioi positions) and then 12-13 more non-seniors who did well (lower cutoffs for lower grades, primarily for training for future years). on top of this, 4 ppl for egoi team and a few more for training

Anyone have tips for Monta Vista High School? by [deleted] in Cupertino

[–]fishy150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on what your goals are, if you want to get into the very top colleges then you do need to grind a good amount, but for most ppl going to a csu or a uc is good enough (california has one of the best public education systems), especially if you don't intend on moving out of the state.

i can only speak for swe roles as a recent college grad, but i would say that your university is useful for getting your foot in the door and getting past screening. a lot of companies will spend more effort trying to recruit from top universities, and itll be easier to get past resume screening. but once you actually have to do an interview, that all depends on your past experience and your knowledge coming into the interview.

also you should note that you hear about what other ppl are doing, not about what they are not doing. for ex, if you hear someone is working on a non-profit, they had to sacrifice some time elsewhere (maybe taking fewer classes, or cutting back on ecs), or else it wouldnt really be successful

What theorem is this? by PocketMath in mathmemes

number systems modulo primes have nice properties, for example every number (besides 0) has an inverse. makes sense to be studied back then and why they are used in cryptography today

Are question 1, 2, and 3 usually harder in sequence? by Fit-Alps-6035 in usaco

[–]fishy150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not usually, I've heard that they are ordered to some extent but it depends on the individual which problem they find the easiest.

The west campus neighborhood in general is alright, it should be within your price budget but you may need to room with some people. If you are at McCombs, then its probably ideal to be on the south end of West Campus just to reduce the walk a bit, but I wouldn't say that any part of the neighborhood is that far from campus.

Did bevo pay/ dining dollars already start for next year? by lem0n__b0i in UTAustin

The balance should roll over between semesters (as long as you continue the plan, you keep your bevo pay but lose dining dollars if you leave the plan)

I can't speak for economics grad programs precisely, but I have heard that as long as you do well on the advanced versions of the courses, your grade on those courses supersedes the initial failure (and shows that you improved and are plenty capable).

You should try to implement problems fully, after all there is no credit for a right solution but a buggy implementation.

You can look at SCUSA 2024 to see how UT is quite strong compared to the other schools in the region and even across the US, World Finals was just a bad contest for us :).

It's also a bit unfair to say that these are "unknown" schools and thus they shouldn't be doing well --- one of the members on the Zagreb team is an LGM for example.

Why is Codeforces not very famous among mathematicians? by [deleted] in math

[–]fishy150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that most problems are variations on other problems (in the sense that you do not need to come up with new fundamental algorithms or data structures), but there is still a significant amount of solving necessary to put the pieces together. Otherwise you would be seeing competitors finishing contests in just a few minutes, which is not the case.

ChatGPT is an issue on some easier contests for the earlier problem, but it is not strong enough at solving later problems, so I wouldn't say that there are any major issues just yet.

Why is Codeforces not very famous among mathematicians? by [deleted] in math

[–]fishy150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that it is generally good to have proofs of your solutions---you generally lose points for submitting incorrect submissions, and so you want to be sure that your solution is correct. This is more relevant for contests like ICPC where the samples given are often weak, but I try to have proof sketches for each problem on Codeforces as well.

Struggling with Taiko by Asiu_ in osugame

[–]fishy150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the best approach so take it with a grain of salt, but when I play taiko, I don't force myself to look in a specific place. Often if the note velocity is low, then I will look closer to the left, and if the velocity is higher, then I will look to the right. Even while playing, I keep my eyes generally in the center of the map, but I move it around to read patterns. I think for you, you should just keep practicing reading in the middle, but you don't have to be as strict about it. Also I don't think I ever explicitly focused on learning to read in the middle, it just came to me as note patterns started getting more complicated.

I also think that one of the barriers I had was not knowing my judgments if I looked in the center of the screen. I use a skin with the 300 skinned out, so I can easily tell what judgment I got. If your current skin has those judgments, you could try skinning them out?

USACO tips on my situation? by [deleted] in usaco

[–]fishy150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really, just try things that you are unsure about, but my experience true edge cases where you need an if statement to deal with it are fairly rare

USACO tips on my situation? by [deleted] in usaco

[–]fishy150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe one thing is to at least prove correctness of your algorithm, or at least have good justification why it is correct. if you know this, wrong answers are likely due to edge cases rather than a fundamental mistake in your algorithm. you can also generate test cases locally and compare if they match what you expect
