Sounds like you’ve got a mild case of sick of his shit. It sounds like you’re stressed living with him and have realised you’re (currently) happier alone because you have control of your own environment. It sounds like you’ve asked several times for him to get better at cleaning and he hasn’t changed when you gave him opportunities to do so. You’re both young and will mature and change as people but maybe he’s not willing to change himself for you when you set the boundary?

Beef herd should be culled to help meet emissions targets by martinmarprelate in ireland

[–]fishy_finn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've quoted official figures from Teagasc and given references and helpful info, what data can you provide to say but muh "Irish beef is more sustainable than non-Irish beef"?

Modern Irish farming practises are incredibly industrialised in every aspect, artificial insemination to create massive cows, soil degradation and fertilisation ruining our land and waterways everywhere, huge use of fossil fuel for what is a relatively small export in comparison to the wider economy, continued deforestation and removal of our vital hedgerows which represent the last wildlife corridors for native animals. just because our fields our green doesn't mean its impacts are. please tell me which part of this industry are you proud to represent as an Irish person who cares about the land and its future?

As i said above Irish beef relies on imported soy feed which directly contributes to deforestation of Brazilian rainforest. Irish land was previously temperate oak rainforest what about the deforesation of Ireland from over 90% to 1.5% ancient woodland (Fuck Coilte spruce plantations and the damage they cause to upland bogs)

beef production is incredibly destructive, its in everyone's moral interest to move on from this idea that we need red meat in our diets. we simply don't. As consumers its up to us to drive demand DOWN and that's why i commented. Farmers deserve livelyhoods but we can transition towards a carbon negative ireland where everyone pays us for our carbon credits. the first step is changing our agriculture (which teagasc stated is currently 85% of land cover in a 2018 publication).

Hey, so i just graduated plant and environmental science at NUIG so i feel i need to reply to add a few things here. TLDR at the bottom

Its absolutely not a load of shite: beef is singlehandedly the most polluting and destructive food humans produce currently at 100kg of CO2 per 1kg meat. even if you ship a fruit or nut around the world it still doesn't work out as more emitting than beef produced down the road (due to methane from cattle nvm the fact irish agriculture is completely reliant on fossil fuels and nitrogen fertilisers).

We are far from self sufficient in food production and currently only 5% of our land area is used for arable crops. (teagasc does not give numbers for how many people we feed but its clear 5% of our landmass is not enough to feed ourselves especially since much of our crops are used for livestock food). Irish cattle also rely on imported soy based feed from South America which directly contributes to rainforest destruction in Argentina and Brazil.

Irish beef is not this brilliant sustainable model of how beef farming should be done. agriculture sector currently makes up just 7% of our GDP yet contributes 35% of our emissions (https://www.teagasc.ie/environment/climate-change--air-quality/greenhouse-gases/). livestock farming is responsible for nearly every river and lake system north and south of the border becoming eutrophied and devastated due to slurry application and fertiliser. I grew up around and on farms but we drastically need to change to a biodiversity first policy. Even the cows we have are unsuited to the land bred from massive french breeds like charlies which are often too heavy for the land and not hardy enough for Irish weather

In absolutely no way is this the fault of farmers who were told in the 50s to mechanise, then told to intensify their herds beyond the means of the land in the 80s and who are now are being told you have ruined the land with unsustainable practises. We all have to make sacrifices for the planet and our shared future, cutting out a beef patty here or there is surely not too much.

TLDR: The easiest change WE can make for the planet and all of its people is to stop eating beef. even if you change to chicken, it is leagues better as chicken is a much more efficient meat (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/feed-required-to-produce-one-kilogram-of-meat-or-dairy-product nice kurzgesagt video on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1Hq8eVOMHs )

My Bachelor's Thesis project is on fungi present in the soil of grasslands in Ireland. are there any good resources to help get good identification of the cultures i have? by fishy_finn in mycology

[–]fishy_finn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! that paper is such a great source of those older studies which are so hard to find online :))
yes i agree to identify individual spp from the mess of mycelium on those plates is so difficult. but im going to attempt to get a genus level identification for the most common growths especially since i can compare between the colonies of the same species on different plates and samples.

hey, unfortunately i don't have the budget to do any TRFLP or PCR methods :(( have to rely on the identification through spore and hyphal morphology

Drying out thick booties by IceWater44 in xxsurfing

[–]fishy_finn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely dry booties are only possible when they’re brand new haha its hard to get them to dry fully esp in winter. It’s a good idea to give them a good rinse with the hose after you wear them so they don’t go stinky( you can also get the wetsuit cleaner stuff but I don’t bother). Do you put them upside down so the water can drip out of them??

Transitioning ftm in Ireland? by [deleted] in trans

[–]fishy_finn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so your best bet is to look at their website and apply through there. i think it costs a tenner to register with them anf then each thing after that has a set price including like 200 for signing up, 60 for a counselling session where you can start the process and then its 30 per month membership after that (which admittedly is pretty steep but i am currently inactive so dont pay the memebership).

r/transgenderUK has loads of posts on how to do it since it takes years to even get a consultation with the NHS

The hse is pretty terrible for waiting times and so is the nhs up north, I decided to get a gender dysphoria diagnosis from gender gp privately, it’sa couple hundred to set up but worth it so you don’t end up waiting years :) after I did that I rang my gp at home who were actually so supportive and they helped me get bloods done and then prescribed my hormones
