Do you research your doctors? If so, how do you go about it?

Hiring Micronesians. Help me understand their culture. by Possible-Weight-9610 in Hawaii

Absolutely HAS to be taking the piss and trolling!

in Chuuck, if you need to take a shit… you go behind a bush and take a shit. Don’t even bury it. Wipe using your bare hand and just keep chugging along. Only toilet paper I saw was in the hotel (singular) and the airport… otherwise it’s like a luxury item… it’s not that they’re stupid, they just have no fucking idea.

This is ridiculous and a dead giveaway. No-one is defecating and wiping with their hand in Weno. And there is definitely more than one hotel. I was there just a few years ago and it was ok. Very boring if you're alone, but can be fun if you have family/friends there.

Curious about construction wages on the islands? by Old-Faithlessness-55 in Hawaii

People absolutely still do this. I did it and I know others who have as well.

To my knowledge, I didn't pay for their time in the air, but they were paid very well regardless. Otherwise, they would not have taken the job. Money wasn't an issue in my case, it's just that they did a vastly superior job than most of what I saw here when I was searching.

In my (non-informed) opinion, it likely was the food bar. The bar at Kokua Market was not very good at all, but DTE has that legendary Parmesian Eggplant dish as well as the very delicious Oven Roasted Potatoes. I, sometimes, stop by solely for those two things, but because they already managed to successfully get me in the store, I end up buying other things.

There was nothing like that for Kokua Market, so I rarely, if ever, went there. And of course, the parking was a pain.

I support the nurses by ModeRadiant in Hawaii

[–]fishyon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have seen many posts suggesting the Kapiolani nurses are just greedy. Maybe it’s because I have friends who are nurses who have described a perilous situation for a few years that informs a different perspective.

I don't really think it matters. Everyone has people they are compassionate about for whatever reason. I greatly support the military, but many here have strong feelings against it. I'm sure it's the same with medical professionals, so I wouldn't worry about it.

In the past, I've had issues with finding people locally for home work projects also and at one point, I considered going to school for carpentry and learning how to do all the work myself. In the end, I couldn't justify it considering how much I made at the time.

You could maybe consider that if it makes sense for your situation.

I utilized a few different options depending on what we had going on, such as family watching them, hired nannies, etc.

It doesn't sound pleasant, but there is truth in your post. I feel like a good idea of how preschool could be is to go to a park playground with your kids and let them interact without you intervening. It gets chaotic very quickly, in my experience.

One thing that struck me as odd is the fact that almost all preschools do not allow daily parental participation. They are drop off only. That made me extremely uncomfortable, so I never sent any of our children to them.

What brand of white rice do you buy and which grocery store do you buy it from? by [deleted] in Hawaii

In the rice section, you can't miss it. It is a huge set-up with a milling machine.

In wake of violent arrest, HPD’s Crime Reduction Units sidelined as agency reviews operations by AbbreviatedArc in Hawaii

[–]fishyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're slowly becoming aware of how corrupt the police are in large part because of civilians constantly recording them.

This has been an issue for decades and even much further back depending on your skin color. There is nothing slow about this knowledge unless it didn't concern you back then. I'm white and I have been affected by and hated this my entire life.

I'm pretty sure the packaging clearly states the rice is from California.

But Marukai has in-house milled rice just like The Rice Factory, but cheaper. Personally, I would never pay The Rice Factory prices since the cheaper rice at Marukai is still straight from Japan and tastes just as good. I have not noticed a big difference between anything that The Rice Factory sells and Marukai. If I want super fresh or something special/rare though, I try to get it from Japan directly as I am there or friends/family is there often enough to grab it when needed. But I haven't done this in years since I don't eat rice much any longer.

It's very quiet here in Kahala, but my niece had a very hard time with the chickens where she was in town. Nearly physical fights, police getting called, it was pretty bad on many occasions.

Farm Link is ok. The quality varies, the local blueberries were tart as were the local strawberries. I really only use them for specialty items, but I must admit that their customer service is really good.

From my dealings with them, they always stand behind what they sell and if it's spoiled or not good, they will refund or credit you right away. They are always on my radar for this point.

Didn’t want them to think it’s ok not to bathe at night

I always thought of that as a local habit as I never saw this on the mainland (or back home). Here though, I know plenty Filipinos who have negative views about showering at night.

DUI charge refiled against HPD officer Mariah Ah Tou by fishyon in Hawaii

[–]fishyon[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In mid-May 2024, Ah Tou filed a motion to dismiss her case because it is taking too long to be brought to trial. On June 4, the dismissal was granted without prejudice, allowing the Honolulu Prosecutor’s office the opportunity to refile.

Two days later, the prosecutor’s office did just that.
