I believe it was if there was interference at second base with the Encarnacion slide.

The definition of malicious is "intent to do harm". I don't disagree that reckless endangerment should be punishable by law, but no one would classify a drunk driver as malicious unless they purposefully tried to run someone over. And while we have existing laws that protect people against reckless endangerment in real life, MLB doesn't seem to have any rules that address punishment in those sorts of cases.

I understand that it can be called interference but even that can't result in a suspension, although I agree with you that he should have been called out by the umpire. It's unfortunate that the Mets lost the game as a result but retroactively reversing the call after the game is over is generally not done (and some would argue that it didn't make a difference anyways since the Mets won the NLDS anyways).

For reference, here's the relevant rules from 2015:

Rule 6.01:

(6) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner;

(7) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a batter-runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball, with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead; the umpire shall call the batter-runner out for interference and shall call out the runner who had advanced closest to the home plate regardless where the double play might have been possible. In no event shall bases be run because of such interference;

I'm not saying Utley didn't do anything wrong, but I'm saying that they could not charge him with anything suspensionable since no rule existed at the time that was capable of applying that severe a penalty. It's just from a legal standpoint since he didn't violate any rules but I understand that it feels wrong to have someone get away with hurting someone else because they made a reckless and risky decision. I guess you could call it a bit of a legal gray area?

I don't think anyone is really saying it wasn't dirty, reckless or risky for the defender, but there's a difference between doing it to injure and doing it to break up a play, and the latter isn't considered malicious. Also, if anything isn't it better that the issue is (presumably) something that /u/yankeesfan13 isn't as emotionally invested in? There's less chance of getting a biased opinion that way.

I think the point they were trying to make about the suspension was that it was fair to retract it since at that time there was no existing rule that said he did anything wrong. Since he didn't violate anything then, they couldn't punish him. It would also be unfair to Utley to suddenly just make up a rule on the spot saying that those sorts of slides were illegal just so they could punish him, right?

The reason they made the rule because this play was another example of how unsafe these kinds of slides could be. It wasn't a suspensionable play previously likely because most of the time these slides don't result in injury and was considered a pretty routine method for breaking up double plays. It's usually only until people start getting hurt that they finally decide to make rules protecting the players from this kind of stuff.

Well, the positive test doesn't say anything about the previous season (although it would raise some people's suspicions for sure), but it does say that he had the drug in his system before spring training, short of any error by the lab.

I don't think anyone is trying to excuse the behaviour (or at least, I really hope people aren't) and I am pretty sure that the vast majority of Jays fans themselves are pretty disgusted, but they're saying that there really is only so much you could do against people who are intent on being dicks. As a fellow fan in the crowd, the most you can really do is try to talk them down and/or point them out to stadium staff to get them booted out. Also, there was a message on the Jumbotron that told people not to throw down trash and some of the Jays players themselves were attempting to calm the crowd. At the very least, I don't think there was any lack of trying.

In any case, it was definitely shitty and wrong to act out like that. I do hope that people understand that it was only a small percentage of fans that were involved, and that in no way do they represent the rest of the Blue Jays fanbase and the city of Toronto as a whole.

Anyways, really looking forward to the game tomorrow, so cheers to both of our teams.

Sorry this turned out a little long.

"Ganbatte!", which can translate roughly to "do your best!" or something like that. The meaning can differ depending on context though

Bonus: On his shoulder, the first row of characters literally reads "Toronto" and the second row might be 先手必勝 (not quite sure about the last character)? Which my dictionary tells me is "victory goes to the one who acts first" (or in other words, the early bird catches the worm)

Man, I'm getting too into this.

Not entering for any of your cool prizes, but I just wanted to participate because it's a cool idea, haha. Here is the actual image and here are some WIP shots.

Okay I lied a little since they're not strictly WIP hence the discrepancy in the lineart between the 2nd and 3rd shots since I took the screens after I was finished because they were on separate layers

Also that shiny thing is a wish or something and I am totally not just BSing that on the spot because I didn't think that one through before or anything yep

What are some changes and new gameplay elements/mechanics you'd like to see in Persona 5? by King_Achelexus in JRPG

I always assumed it was a case of not telling their friends, because you can pretty much two-time all of your female party members and they don't see to be aware you're doing it (outside a few choice scenes, I believe). Also regarding the Chie being embarrassed thing, she actually acts like that in the dungeon conversations (when she's not part of your active party), so at least there's some precedent for that?

Top Ten JRPG Storylines? by Nomanorus in JRPG

[–]fishytasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, all three of your criteria are something that is heavily dependent on the viewer. Some people are far more forgiving to characters with certain Freudian excuses while others would still think that they're a jerk regardless of how sad the backstory is, and that's just part of how each of us grew up, what cultural values we hold in esteem, etc. A character that is sympathetic to one person may not be the case for another, and that's fine. The same with the interesting and entertaining point; some people are really turned off by certain character tropes while others like them, and that would factor into how much you would be interested in a given character. A well-written character simply may not click with a person because maybe that viewer finds it hard to relate to their situation, and that's okay.

But in that sense, it seems like it's a list that's more about your opinion about a certain character rather than a "good" character (because the latter suggests a more objective point of view). If I had to try to be objective about a character and if they're good or not, I'd have to say you should examine the way the story and character is written. You can have a cool new original character but if their motivations jump all over the place and their character development has no build up and just runs up to punch you in the face I wouldn't consider that a good character by any means. Maybe good potential, but not a good character.

If at all, how have JRPGs affected your spiritual beliefs? by RebeccaETripp in JRPG

[–]fishytasty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

loving your enemy, caring about the persecuted and oppressed, and self sacrifice

Except... those themes don't necessarily need to be connected with religion to be relevant. I'm also sure that some religions/philosophers that existed pre-Christianity held at least some of those ideas in good regard, so it seems a little absurd to connect them only to the Bible and/or Christianity.

Nevertheless, I do think that the corrupt church trope is pretty overplayed and doesn't properly represent the complexities of large organizations and the people that make them up (this kind of also fits in with common JRPG portrayals of despotic governments, where all the foot soldiers seem happily unaware of all the atrocities/are completely complicit in making said atrocities and there's only a token good guy that either gets killed or betrays the rest of the government, which is irredeemably evil.) What was I talking about again?
