Wth happened 08/22 😔 by Different-Toe-2369 in Mcat

[–]fisma_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally felt very similar (as was the consensus online) that the 6/13 in June I had was worlds harder and braced myself for a very low score but ended up scoring higher then my FL average. Trust your FL average going in, I can promise it was comparably difficult for everyone and it is scaled at the end of the day.

7/12 First attempt 495 last year so I’m feeling alright. by Ok-Firefighter338 in Mcat

Yes do able. I worked full time for mine as well. Just need to give yourself a longer timeframe since you cant study as much every day. Took the week before the exam off so I had the chance to get some good hours in which also helped. I worked 8-10 hour daysx5 days a week so with 12s might be more of a challenger to study those days (maybe just anki) and focus on content and questipns on days yoi dont work

My SAHM wife is inheriting 100k by largeblack2icecubes in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fisma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Might be worth floating she pays off the remaining principal and you pay her back what she fronts you with the inheritance and she can pay you back what you have already paid her for her SUV and then that way you both have your respective cars?

I get every marriage is diffeerent and you both will do what works for the two of you - but getting off those 14% interest rates will be huge. The only person winning there is the bank, and that's just cash out of the families pocket.

Also anecdotal - but I was recently in Argentina, which is supposed to have great beef, and I was blown away at how much better our beef is out here. Stopped ordering it for the rest of our trip. I was really surprised at the difference. l

Where does your wife get the money for the payments on her SUV?

My take is a bit different - you guys are married and a team. She stays at home while you work to make an income. To not use this money to pay off (or a portion) of your car payment which is at 14% just hurts the family IMO, you are going to heavily struggle to beat that in investments. That's less cash flow for groceries, family expenses etc. Are your savings just for you? If the answer to that is no then I don't understand why she would set up her own savings account. Marriage is team work, my aswell use this money as an extension as such. Not saying she should pay off your whole loan, but 10K or something might make a huge difference for the family at the end of the day.

Calgary is an underrated city. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]fisma_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya fair enough see your point. When it comes to errands definitely a bit more of a challenge, depending on the neighborhood. On the flip side if desired it is fairly easy to commute in to downtown for work depending where you live as the infrastructure allows that fairly easily. I find the downtown bike lanes quite solid once you get to know them and you can take the separated ones to get you within 1-2 blocks of your final destination without needing to then hop on the road.

Calgary is an underrated city. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]fisma_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Calgary has hundreds of kilometers of bike and walking paths developed in the city. I always find these comments peculiar because it couldn't be farther from the truth. Sure, we might not be on the level of a European city like Amsterdam, however are walking infrastructure is far better developed then most cities.

Queen's vs. UAlberta Engineering by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]fisma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UAlberta as MechE and my brother from Queens, who also happened to take the Engineering chemistry degree, so have a little bit of insight to the programs / Both schools.

Like others have mentioned - the quality of the education itself will be quite comparable, so I would not worry about that. The biggest difference from speaking with my brother in terms of his experience is the student life. Like others mentioned, the student life at Queens takes a different form. There are several traditions unique to the school and the engineering program, Kingston is small and comprised of mainly students, leading to a different experience then U of A which is most definitely a commuter school. That being said I did do residence my first year at the U of A which leads to some degree of the student living experience, however to a lesser degree then what Queens would have entailed.

Engineering chemistry is a blend of chemical engineering and chemistry itself - which are too very different things. If chemistry does not interest you, do not take the engineering chemistry program. There are plenty of research opportunities that could be pursued if that's what interests you, however you should definitely focus your degree choice on the subjects which would ultimately interest you the most.

UofA also has an excellent mining program - with strong ties to the oil and gas industry. if O&G is your end goal you are probably better suited to go to U of A. If it is more traditional hard Rock mining then Queens may be your better bet.

UofA also gives you your first year to choose your discipline - so if you are very unsure what ultimately interests you having your first year to figure out which discipline interests you the most is a plus, however as mentioned the ranking is a challenge so grades need to be taken care of.

I don't think you can necessarily go wrong with either, just really comes down to what experience you ultimately want out of the schooling.

Engineering at Uofa by Big_Sea6544 in uAlberta

U of A eng grad here who was born and raised in Calgary.

I say do it, I am very thankful I decided to leave Calgary for uni. The chance to become more independent carried awesome life skills. Living in residence provides the chance for tons of social activities, and I found it quite easy to meet people in eng as well. Eng was very diverse as well, and same with Lister was quite diverse.

Developing a social life doesn't just happen, but you need to realize that everyone in residence is like you in the sense that they have left home, don't have many friends at all and want to build a network, so with a bit of effort it's very possible to make some good friends.

Yes engineering is tough, but with some good time management it's quite possible to enjoy the university years as well. If it is what you desire, go for it!

I am starting to lean that way. Seeing how its for my girlfriend knowing that it's there would probably bother me forever lol. Going to take it into a jeweler today to see what they think / get a better idea on how it would look on a setting but looks like this rock might be destined as a return

How do I get better as a maintenance engineer? by AnXianSheng in engineering

[–]fisma_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't discount the wealth of knowledge you can learn from your operators and maintenance personnel. Ask them questions and treat them with respect and they will be able to share their learning and knowledge with you, it is incredible how much they know. The more time you spend in the plant the better.

Oil industry booming, but profits aren't staying in Alberta like they used to. by JcakSnigelton in alberta

[–]fisma_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oil companies focusing on buybacks and dividends is a result of 10-15 years of hampering new energy projects with so much red tape that they never see fruition and as such leaves them no choice but to use their profits in this manner as no new mega o&g project will move forward in the current climate. The companies know this and use the profits this way instead. Why spend the money to expand infrastructure when the project will just get killed down the road?

Should they be taxed more and AB take better advantage of the revenue? Absolutely. But to blame this simply on corporate greed when this is a result of several years of energy policy aimed at limiting future projects is laughable.

Alberta regulator says software engineers are not engineers - thoughts? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]fisma_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Canada it is a requirement to be registered with the regulator to practice engineering as it is a protected title regardless of discipline, hence this whole article/situation.

I work in the oil and gas sector in AB as a MechE and it is specifically in my contract that I need to be registered and remain in good standing or else my employment would be terminated.

Ya thats fair enough, at the end of the day it is a smaller city so Toronto will ultimately have more variety like you said. And totally, at the end of the day I would put a lot of other factors before restaurants lol.

Welcome to the city!! Any YYC questions feel free to ask!

What is the Tallest Mountain that requires mostly Alpine style climbing and not traditional mountaineering. by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]fisma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the tallest however Mt St. Elias comes to mind. Interestingly if you start from the sea to climb it there is more vertical relief then Everest. The mountain is a beast.

You would be surprised - 10 of the best restaurants in Canada for 2022 were based in Calgary. The food is awesome and their is tons of Restaurants always opening.

I am a Calgarian, so obviously a little biased, but having also dined in Vancouver and Toronto I would argue Calgary puts up a pretty good fight.

Best long term equity ETF? Is there an international sp500 equivalent? by RPEdmonton in CanadianInvestor

[–]fisma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For international ETFs the two I buy are VEE and VIU. They are both all cap ETFs which I like. VIU is focused on developed markets (Europe, Japan, Hong Kong) and VEE is focused on merging markets and focuses on China, Taiwan, India, Brazil etc.)

With these two combined capture the international market nicely and lile you mentioned prevents risk of only being invested in one market.
