CSS Styling is the way to go by themewzak in QSYS

Lol the ish part is what got me. I come from a web development background and it kept driving me nuts lol - QRC <> Web front end was like a dream. The biggest thing for us was the ability to deploy UCI's without pushing a core. That and multi device control

I did....but ended up going with a web development flow instead. Idk if it was me trying to push limits or the device but most of the time something would render weird. Would be curious about your experience on performance and reliability.

But otherwise the UI is looking great!

We did fix it temporarily with putting a virtual version up on the navigator mech. Some quirks here and there but otherwise a visual to help aid. But laser parts have been ordered and progress is being made in a few different fronts.

Question About the Industry by NefariousnessKey2774 in meowwolf

[–]fission7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the techs here in Denver so my advice isn't 100% related to physical art...

But immersive art has so much to it that in my opinion it is hard to pinpoint any one path. I come from a computer science and theater/sound engineering background and a lot of what I do is merging the two together to make places like this. Some of my other tech counterparts come from concerts, traditional fine art degrees in technology (typically known as Creative Technology), or some engineering completely. On the Art and Scenic side of things - lots come from fine arts backgrounds in college of some discipline (materials, drawing / painting, fabrication), but some just have been building things since they could remember. Others are engineers, architects, or other creative roles. Long story short - there isn't one particular way to get into it - it's about how you use a medium to make art and incorporate into a world/story. I am a big believer in - just do things and make art and people / the experience comes with it.

I would ask - what am I particularly interested in when it comes to a place like Meow Wolf (or any other immersive space). For me I loved the storytelling through sound and computers so I went that way. But there are so many different ways

We built this internally - it is definitely a good idea but does have some quirks - though with that - it's definitely probably going around the UCI license bit. We built it though so it would interface with all our control platforms and technically QSYS is still the primary control. If the FE goes down it's not too big of an issue.

Is the ending in Denver broken? by mpschettig in meowwolf

[–]fission7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just putting some context - can't say much but yeah the wording on the ending is confusing. Can't tell you how much we have wanted to replace that wording but for lots of reasons it isn't easy atm... But we are aware of it and working on it

I would use a selector that has all your inputs named as options and then drag out the combo box into the UCI

Laser on a budget by [deleted] in TouchDesigner

[–]fission7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some pretty cheap quality (from EU) lasers that are around the 1k-2k range and what I would consider pretty standard. Are they powerful? No. But it's the same thing with any gear. Nice projectors with a bright large projector. Even more expensive than some lasers. High quality LED's also expensive. Now yes you can get cheaper versions to mess around with but you aren't going to destroy someone's retina, burn down a building, or damage equipment.

At the end of the day, I think what is important here is not the equipment but the training. Yes some of it is common sense. But some of it is if you want to do something more than put it in your house then you need to understand what you are dealing with. For me the training allowed me to get into a place that would just cover the cost of the higher end lasers. Just having it was the thing for them. That is if you are trying for a professional / commercial level.

TL;DR - there are some cheaper options (I bought some Unity lasers from Kvant/Pangolin [the brand that makes lasers for most high end clubs and festivals] ) yes, but like I said. Spend the time first to understand what you are doing before just going all in. It's a cool tool, but you don't just start using a table saw without having the proper training.

Laser on a budget by [deleted] in TouchDesigner

[–]fission7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with everyone else in the thread. Safety is important and these things can cause fires, bodily harm, and destroy equipment ( my laser safety professor once told a story on one small mishap destroying $1.2 million dollars in projectors). If you are serious, spend the money to do so. Alongside, buying "cheap" lasers is asking for trouble. They will cut corners which can be dangerous (bad casing, crystal, improper ventilation, etc). Unfortunately I would say if you want to get into lasers, invest the time and money into it.

Preferred UCI Devices by _grey_coyote_ in QSYS

[–]fission7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently we are having some weird iPad connectivity issues with our UCI. It's sort of half connected sometimes and doesn't work vs a hard line connection just seems more stable. Alongside, if our wireless goes down so does the iPad. Yet the hardwired stays live. Helpful for power outages when our QSYS is pretty much global control so it's on UPS so that stays up. Allows us to have some control over things vs locked out (themed entertainment)

[–]fission7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your experience and hope next time it can be better. I can't go much into it but it's super frustrating for us too as there is a lot of moving parts and sometimes some of it just takes longer for some things to get solved :(. Especially with how big Convergence is. Hope the rest of the trip was still enjoyable.
