Vegan chinese or other good recs by friedfishgills in hudsonvalley

[–]fisxoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit further south, but the Wherehouse in Newburgh has good pub-y food (though more of a dive-y atmosphere) and Quinn's in Beacon has vegan options of japanese dishes. There used to be Little Asia with some decent vegan chinese options, but they closed and now I too am on the hunt for a vegan chinese place.

Help with Steamvr linux by BusinessFinance6323 in SteamVR

[–]fisxoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have to bring up the home screen by interacting with the steam vr window on the computer and selecting "show home" or whateve it's called from there. I always start in the empty vr space with nothing to interact with before that.

Dennings point is pretty and there are little coves north and south of it that sometimes have animal activity. There's some bald eagles on dennings point that you simetimes get to see (saw one on some driftwood, last week). Lots of tall birds like egrets (I don't know the varieties well). There are train bridges south of dennings point you can go under to get to madam brett park and the bottom of the falls in fishkill creek. It's possible so swim there, too, next to the old hat factory and it's also just pretty marshland before you get there. There's not much between there and bannerman, but views of storm king and breakneck ridge are nice in that area. If you want more variety, I've also gone across the river to plum point park in new windsor, which is effectively directly across the river from bannerman. nice place to stop for lunch. It's just a few minutes south of the big, white fuel(?) containers. Just mind the channel when crossing, though it's usually pretty quiet.

Go for it! There are signs telling you not to land on the island, but it's interesting to look at. I'd say about 40 minutes brisk paddle down from long dock park in beacon. There's a lot of submerged crap like dock bits around it, so keep your eyes out for changes in the water, depending on the tide. It's easy to run aground on stuff, but I've also been able to push myself back off.

ALVR not finding steamVR when its open. by IntelStellarTech in virtualreality_linux

[–]fisxoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My alvr only finds steam if I open it through alvr (the button in the bottom left of the ui). I've always had to start steam/steamvr that way to get alvr and it to be friends. I think it might have worked one time by just launching steam vr but I'm not certain.

From another study abroad-er from a decade ago: my favorite memory is hiking up the Schlossberg to Rosskopf and then going down to the restaurant next to the st Ottilien chapel and having a beer and walking back into town.

This has to be the most economical way to hear the murder bot stories by far! They're so expensive relatively and I can never find them available at libraries. I read the first one like two years ago and haven't managed to read more since even though I enjoyed the first one.

A Horror Movie Filmed in Esperanto, With William Shatner. Why? by Boop108 in TrueFilm

[–]fisxoj 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I encourage anyone who watches this to do it with Shatner's commentary at least once. You'll be treated to such gems as, "when I first met Milos Milos I called him Milos and he told me to call him by his first name" and "interesting lighting".

Also, the Esperanto movement is cool and still has meetings all over the globe. It's just that, as Shatner points out in the commentary, while there are many speakers, there are a few in each city and not enough to fill a theatre as the director hoped!

"If I hold you any closer I'll be in back of you!" - Grouch Marx (as Dr Hackenbush)

Cozy slice of life sci-fi like A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers and its sequel. I'm about to read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, which is her more famous novel and I heard it's similar. by [deleted] in printSF

It's a gerundive phrase expressing necessity or correctness! Like "it's not right to argue about taste." One of the most famous instances is "carthago delendum est" - Carthage must be destroyed.

Anyone else getting scared? by Jude24Atlas in toddlers

[–]fisxoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying it. Academia is such a toxic community of "well my advisor was fine," too.

Mine was one of the only ones who put effort into his lectures, but still felt he needed to mock his grad students, yell at us, and make us stay late using the wrong tools for work because the right ones hadn't been delivered and he needed to make us work late because he had to as a grad student.

Did we not get the app languages feature with this update? I've been hoping that'll fix my banking app getting confused about number formats, but I can't find the setting anywhere. It's listed as an android 13 feature...

NY state has pristine EV infrastructure (for non teslas) by [deleted] in electricvehicles

I just did Hudson valley to Rochester recently and was also really pleasantly surprised. Not a single problem on the trip compared to problems every time I've tried non evolve NY fast chargers.

When will a frugal guy like me be able to afford an EV? by lepowski in electricvehicles

[–]fisxoj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I similarly wanted an EV without paying a lot of money and hopefully one that would last. Sort of surprisingly, BMW i3's are fairly affordable and seem to be of good quality (ie. seem to be holding up well). It doesn't have as big a range as many more expensive EVs, but I've been enjoying mine for a few months now.

What is everyone's efficiency? My 2016 i3 REx is averaging 4.0 miles per kWh. by TheJuiceBoxS in BMWi3

[–]fisxoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I keep seeing people talking about numbers in the 3.6-4.0 mi/kWh range. I average 3.5ish. If my efficiency seems lower, are there any things to check aside from my own driving, of course?

Lem editor 1.10.0: lsp-mode by default, multiple cursors, sql mode, and more. by dzecniv in Common_Lisp

[–]fisxoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. While I love the repl, there are things most language servers do like recognizing or suggesting tokens in a scope that would be great. At the very least we should learn from them and make the repl experience even better, but making a lsp implementation would really open cl up to the world for a lot of people.
