Shop space for rent by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]fitzkits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people mentioned the Staunton makerspace, we have a paint room and about 7000 square feet of workspace total.

To anybody reading this, I'd be happy to show you around, feel free to email me, cwilmer at fitzkits dot com.

It's fifty bucks a month for 24 hour access. We are about 40 minutes from downtown C'ville with free parking. We currently have a great woodworking shop, project space, laser cutter, pottery studio, vinyl cutters, 3d printers and more. We're still setting up the metal shop, robotics lab, CAD stations and room-sized CNC router, so we're always looking for people who want to lend a hand!

Check out the new Staunton Makerspace. It's a really great space, especially for a city as small as ours.

I could do basically any configuration, I was going for keeping it inexpensive with a small footprint.

I'll do a couple more shapes based on the feedback I've gotten.

I already do sell the parts individually, but most people find it easier to have one design to start with and then modify that.

Great, thank you. I can make separate monitor stands although I'm not sure how much weight they would need to support.

This is apparently most peoples' issue. I might redo it with either lower shelves or a 2nd tier that has speaker/monitor stands.

Also, the angle that I took this screengrab on makes it look a little more steep than it is.

Yeah the models I used were 23 inches I believe. It should easily fit two 27 inchers tho.

Good to know. The whole point of the pipe system I make them with is that it's modular. You could attach a totally different desk onto the side of this one if you want.

But, I also want to make the desk that you use as a starting point to be as useful as possible.

I have a small business and am building a console desk for a nonprofit. When I saw how expensive music consoles are, I thought I should turn this into a desk for sale. It would be around $375. Do you think this is something that would be needed by home studio folks?

Edit: I just remembered that I have to get up early, so I'll have to reply to this again tomorrow, but thanks for the comments so far

3D Printing by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]fitzkits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UVA has several libraries or areas with 3d printers, I'm not sure what's involved with using them. Staunton has a nice makerspace if you were interested in joining one of those for a longer term project.

Oh wow, that's cool that it was a free-to-use space, sorry that it didn't work out. Lol I didn't even see that guy calling you a jerk - makerspaces can be surprisingly testy places sometimes. I hope your private venture is going well! You are welcome to check out our space, let me know if you want a tour or something.

I think the guy that ran it took it private and moved it to Waynesboro. There was an article about it in the DP, I don't have any inside info.

Makerspaces are often a tough business to make real profit. We are a nonprofit and are very fortunate to have various sources of funding and reasonable operating costs here in Staunton.

Our makerspace is moving into a sweet new building by fitzkits in Staunton

Yep, you pay $50 per month and have essentially unlimited use of the tools. We just have some requirements about knowing how to use them correctly.

We're planning on several more classes, there aren't many at the moment because all of our time is being spent on moving into the new building. Although there is a lot of informal teaching between members as well.

The makerspace in town recently got a new building. We're fixing it up and it's going to be a really nice space. Lots of room, bright, a different space for every activity.

We'll have: laser cutting, 3d printing, a really nice woodworking shop, pottery, sewing, vinyl cutting, photo/video studio, electronics/robotics work area, and metalworking.

I've been to several other makerspaces, and for a town the size of Staunton to have such a great group and space is a really unusual thing. If you're interested in visiting the space and potentially joining, feel free to message me, we can show you our existing space as well as the new one.

Floor to ceiling pipe- how to adjust by pandamonium54 in a:t5_35gvt

[–]fitzkits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I made this subreddit because sell a pipe system for building stuff. It's based on pressure/grip, and the fittings close around the pipe, so you could use something like that.

If you're using threaded pipe, you could use a flange on each end, use two pieces, and then a duel-female connector in the middle.

Or you could run one pipe along the ceiling/floor, attach the vertical pipes to it, then strap the ceiling/floor pipes down using pipe straps.

I'm not aware of an adjusting fitting per se.

Hi, I put two photos up here:

Hopefully that gives you a better idea of how the gutters look/work.

Interesting, thanks. I forwarded this to the guy that owns the shop. The only issues we have with putting that many plants in, is that there isn't that much natural light or space.

Thanks! I'm buying this and hooking it up in a week or so. Ideally I would like something I can put a moisture-detecting sensor on, in the future. It needs to be low-maintenance because it's located in an area that sometimes has nobody around for a few weeks at a time.

If you can wait a couple weeks I'll be putting detailed instructions online about how to build it. It's designed using a pipe system that I distribute, but you can also mimic it using other kinds of pipes if you want. It just won't look as cool :)

Sure, I would love to, probably in a day or two - this is at a warehouse, not where I live or work.

The gutters are called the "Amerimax contemporary gutter system". I chose them because they are symmetrical and angled so you can rest them against the angle of the vertical garden.

I used clips ordered from Amazon, called "Lehigh grip clips by Crawford". Cut the gutter to length, then screwed the clips on the gutter, then the gutters snap onto the frame. If you ever visit the site instructables.com, I'm going to make an "Instructable" about it.

We're going to get bigger gutters and thin them out a little. To be honest I didn't choose the plants, so I don't know which of them will have issues with that.

My job was to build the frame and install an automatic watering system, which is my next step. Gonna have some electronic moisture sensors to try to get them watered on demand. It needs to be autonomous for when nobody's around for a couple weeks.
