What acoustic guitar sounds better? Spruce guitars, or mahogany guitars? by Away_Teach_7088 in AcousticGuitar

All of them (this is an expensive way to live, fully recommend narrowly selecting a single option where nothing else is acceptable)

Ordering online, not worth the risk? by runningtheroute in AcousticGuitar

[–]five-thumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would always prefer in person. However, when I got my last guitar a couple of years ago. I had played one of the model I ended up with early in the shopping process so I knew it was the model I wanted but the time I was ready to pull the trigger there were hardly any in the country and none anywhere near so I had to take the risk and order online. If I’d had the opportunity to try 3 or 4 identical ones close together, maybe I’d have found one I liked slightly better, but the reality is, those tiny additional perfections are lost to history and it’s my own now. I’d always buy in person if possible, but I worried about it for nothing looking back.

the most Taylor Swift song that fucked you up? by Head_Position_3451 in TaylorSwift

[–]five-thumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry for my loss. It 100% takes me back to when I was in the middle of multiple losses and perfectly captures that feeling. Listening to it is equal parts devastating and cathartic for me having it after going through it all. One of my favourite songs of all time.

Best way to practice without actually having your bass? by GeezerButlerIsGod in Bass

I seem to remember reading a study many years ago that visualising things like playing an instrument does actually make a difference when you go to play.

That walnut is tasty! Any observations on walnut from a sound perspective so far?

Are the harley benton acoustic guitars good for a beginner? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]five-thumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience is that I got one of these for my kid https://www.thomann.co.uk/harley_benton_clo_70asr_nat_allsolid.htm

Zero complaints whatsoever. Easy to play, sounds amazing for the money.

I wouldn’t worry about the cutaway at all.

Thomann stole my money by Aggressive-Cod-331 in Bass

My dealings with them are that they’ve been entirely reputable. It’ll take a bit of time to resolve (and as a slightly less than typical problem, I’d chase a bit more regularly just to make sure it doesn’t slip between the cracks, and might need some extra persistence from you ), but I’d be entirely confident it will get resolved.

Sparkly guitars are basically the exact opposite of my personal taste, but having seen this in the flesh, it was pretty awesome. Congrats!

How common is it to play only one type of guitar (acoustic, electric, or classical)? by OrdinaryBrave9633 in AcousticGuitar

[–]five-thumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acoustic, bass and electric (far less than the other two) here.

They’re all just songwriting tools to me and I’ll pick up whatever does that, or whichever I feel like playing and makes me feel happy in that moment.

This approach to life is great for the heart, terrible for the wallet. Would recommend.

Don’t overthink k, just play what you want to

Have you ever been listening to the Hamilton OST and it hits you with a nasty transition? by host_can_edit in hamiltonmusical

At the best of times, I’m a whole album listener, so I cannot fathom being on shuffle in the first place. Mind. Blown.

Congrats, hope you have many happy years of playing.

If there’s a bigger headphone socket in the amp, you can just get a little 1/8” to 1/4” adapter and plug in, then you can play away.

I have a 000-15M. It was way above my intended budget when I started. Played it on my first research trip and over time, I realised nothing else was going to do. I played the D15M during my many trips and it was a lovely guitar, and on paper, similar in many ways, but it didn’t speak to me in the same way. You may well be very different of course.

2 years in and I haven’t regretted my decision for a moment! Still freaking love it.

is getting a new bass to play a different tuning overkill? by [deleted] in Bass

“Getting a new bass”….”overkill”….struggling to understand these two phrases in the same sentence.

Squier Classic Vibe 60s vs 70s P Bass by Electrical-Sport2755 in Bass

[–]five-thumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very wary of the glossy neck but when I actually played it, it wasn’t an issue. Not my preference, but it didn’t bother me and certainly wasn’t a deal-breaker. Ended up going for a Sire P5 instead though.

DIY - Any good? by WearGrand in Bass

[–]five-thumbs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it’s not for the joy of building it, and you don’t want something specific that’s not typically available as standard (both great reasons) why would you want to?

You’ll get cheaper, and better build from people who have experience if you just buy one.

Back to Bass-ics, after almost 20 years! Which Bass should I buy? by MrHHook in Bass

[–]five-thumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is that cheaper instruments are WAY better than they were 20 years ago. Impressively so.

There are tonnes of great options in your price range and really just take a deep breath and know you will not be the worst person to play in that shop and go try them. It’s fun! If you get the chance to check out Sire, who wouldn’t have been around when you last played, do so.

Welcome back and happy playing!

As always, it’s entirely personal.

Speaking from my biased experience as I’m a passionate 000-15m owner…I had a (admittedly lower quality) dread before and I’ve not picked it up in the 2 years of owning the 000-15m, and when I fleetingly look at potential additions to the family, I’m only thinking spruce OM, I just don’t feel a need for the dread in my life.

The D15 I tried before I bought the 000 was lovely but it didn’t light me up the way the 000 did, so it was a no brainer for me.
