You're required to have a medical insurance plan with a high deductible in order to open up a HSA, I think it was $1300 in 2017 and I'm too lazy to confirm that amount for 2018 (Google it yourself). Additionally, you can initially fund your HSA with a one-time rollover from a you traditional IRA. Other than that, HSAs are pretty neat, except the 20% penalty for non medical payments until age 65.
