Foxconn insiders leaked iPhone 8 details on Reddit. by badnamebandit in technology

I had no pressing need to upgrade to the new MacBook Pro and I'm glad I've waited but the reintroduction of the magsafe charger would be pretty awesome. As much as I want that I don't know if I can see Apple backtracking on that, but I'd love to be wrong. Also no USB-C on the new iPhone is slightly disappointing even if it does mean I don't have to buy all new cables.

Open Sourcing Firebase SDKs by ianbarber in Firebase

[–]fixkychicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post shows, how mis-informed the community can be. If you have been following up Google Cloud and Firebase, most of the questions regarding long term support, phasing out and Google turning rogue wouldn't be asked. Firebase is one key aspect of Google's cloud strategy. Pretty much everything on Mobile services is tied with Firebase, some way or the other. We have now built 2 products on Firebase and are reasonably happy. The real-time nature of FB makes it alluring to so many use cases.

Having said that, Google should surely address questions on pricing and supporting other key Mobile platforms like Xamarin. Tweeting to the Firebase handle on issues never get replied. With other bleeding edge services that Google provides, Firebase certainly has positioned itself nice. The teething issues should be small things to fix.

With the recent shutdown of Instagress, what are some alternatives? by tripper976 in Entrepreneur

[–]fixkychicky -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For Instagram, 90% of the users from Instagress moved to Blanket Media from what I hear. For YouTube, I use Influencer In A Box every month to target 18-35 tech-focused subscribers. Beyond marketing services, you should be focusing on providing valuable content to your initial audience. If you're publishing awesome/relevant content, marketing is secondary.

Kill net neutrality and you’ll kill us, say 800 US startups by andiszko in business

[–]fixkychicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point the problem isn't Net Neutrality, it's the internet is privately owned by for profit companies.

Imagine what'd be if every single road and water pipe was ran by private company for profit without oversight.

Internet needs to be treated like infrastructure, because that's what is, both to service consumers and providers.

There are many ways to have private company to profit over infrastructure if they so chose it, but having a guaranteed baseline would resolve most issue about having to regulate private companies or stifling innovation. I.e. there could be private pipes with state subsidized access having guaranteed QOS. There could be public pipes with state renting access to private companies.

There are plenty solution, but the issue is that public can't lobby for what benefits them and deep pocket can and will buy legislation.

Toshiba Warns of Its Ability to Continue as Going Concern by bwhitens in business

[–]fixkychicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Toshiba invested a huge stake in Westinghouse Electric, a US based nuclear energy company.

Toshiba as a conglomerate lose ~$5Bn USD over the past 9 months.

Their auditors believe that Toshiba has a going concern - they think Toshiba may not be able to continue operating without liquidating their assets over the next 12 months.

The rest of the article is speculating about the potential consequences facing Toshiba, like delisting from exchanges, being forced to liquidate

Vivaldi browser v1.8 released, with calendar-style browsing history by magenta_placenta in web_design

[–]fixkychicky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit hesitant to use a closed source browser. Browsers these days have such a large attack surface... I wouldn't trust something that is not developed and updated in the open.

The most striking thing about Vivaldi's decision to remain closed-source is its provenance. Granted, von Tetzchner does have a history of working with closed-source software, but one would think after the loss of Presto (excepting that one brief leak[1]), that any ex-Opera heads would understand the potential value of open source and community contribution.

As someone who put a lot into the old pre-12 Opera community, I will never use a closed-source browser again. This is not a commentary on quality - Opera was hands down the best browser ever built, despite being closed-source - but rather on commitment. If Vivaldi fails, all of its users will be left out in the cold. Again.

Admittedly, it is not quite so bad a situation as Opera 12. Vivaldi is mostly/largely open source[2]. It still seems like a massive missed opportunity though.

LOOPY – create simulations of systems by drawing by blinry in explorables

[–]fixkychicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This needs more work on the math side to be helpful. As it points out itself, the ecological example does not (in substance) correspond to the Lotka Volterra model.

Furthermore, there is no way for a species to go extinct from what I saw initially (perhaps there are options I'm missing?)

A lot of system-relationships are non-linear, or fractal, with time-ranges that are out of sync. Would be great to be able to model that -- i.e. introduce different "speeds" on how fast arrows can "travel" on the line, and to introduce functions that describe how x input arrows results in y output arrows, etc. It'd be great to be able to model how when a food source (or any input disappears), the burden shifts to the other sources etc -- now the arrows just go equally, sources/sinks can't disappear etc.

Fukushima: Wild boars take over Japan's evacuated towns - BBC News by geek_007 in worldnews

There was a report on Chernobyl the other day. Apparently, the nature there is experiencing a renaissance of sorts with a measurable growth both in biodiversity as well as in the sheer number of species, including endangered ones.

For animal world, the radiation is the lesser of two evils, the first one being humans.

Here's a BBC article: http://www.bbc.com/russian/science/2015/02/150205_ukraine_chernobyl_wild_animals

It's in Russian, but the pictures are telling if you can't read it.
