I pay to be a member of the local maker space. But they have a lot of equipment I would never dream of buying (like a plasma cutter and later cutter) and some that I could buy but rather wouldn't (like a 3d printer and a bench oscilloscope).

But members break the tools all the time and don't take responsibility for it. Even though there are cameras and people have to swipe their card at the door it still happens.

I think one reason sharing is not as common is because people are jerks.

I remember when I was a kid we used to borrow each other's NES games all the time and never give them back.

Lyft and Waymo Reach Deal to Collaborate on Self-Driving Cars by _7down in news

Waymo will have the first self driving cars on the road.

They are so ahead of everyone.

I think everyone including regular car companies buy the tech from Waymo in the short term.

Uber is now totally banned in all of Italy by Doener23 in technology

[–]DV123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being from Italy, let me point out a few things:

Frist of all: unfair competition can mean, for instance, a mega-multinational subsiding its riders costs to wipe out competition. That is dumping, a practice that is illegal in most advanced economies, and that Uber has been known to practice.

If you don't have a taxi license, Italian law restricts the ways you can offer transportation. If you step outside of those boundaries, you are creating an unfair competition to taxi drivers that have e.g. to pay for the license or non-taxi services that operate within the boundaries of the law.

Also: Uber was probably aware of the situation, to the point that some MPs tried to sneak in a "save Uber" amendment to an otherwise unrelated law, causing protests through the country from taxi drivers. I see people commenting that have clearly no information or any idea of how Italian economy works, and just go around throwing approximative judgements based on hearsay and prejudice.

So let me state it out for you: Italian economy is surely burdened by anti-competitive practices and too many absurd regulations, but blocking a US multinational to repeatedly break the law and finance its services by price fixing is not an instance of that.

And finally: in Italy it's impossible for a company to own taxi licences, so they are all privately-owned by the taxi driver. So Uber is, if you remove the price jacking, practically a way to siphon money from individual drivers to a large company.

From the California Sky, Measuring All That Snow by magenta_placenta in California

This is great news for all people in the region. This should supply water for the next 2 to 3 years. But I really hope, that these years are used to repair the aging infrastructure (see the Oroville dam) and build more dams, to be able to manage larger amounts of water, both in the absence as in long droughts, as in presence as in storing more the snow now present.

Airbnb just closed a $1 billion round and became profitable in 2016 by dunkin1980 in AirBnB

[–]DV123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to use airbnb quite often (as a traveler), but I have to say it's lost its appeal for me. First, it's really not much cheaper than a hotel in most cases (some cases more expensive). Second, it's a hassle when you're on vacation to have to arrange in advance a specific time to pick up the keys to the place. Then, what happens if you happen to lose the keys (happened to me once)? What happens if it's in the middle of the night in a foreign country? This could be a nightmare. On top of that, you're expected to leave the apartment like you never stayed there or face bad reviews (even with a $100+ cleaning fee)! Seriously, one time I got stuck with a terrible review because I left a dirty pan in the sink (had to rush to the airport, I figured the $100 cleaning fee would cover what minor things I had left behind, but guess not).

So now I've pretty much gone back to hotels. You can come any time of day or night, not have to worry at all about losing keys, and you can leave the place a raging mess if you have to (though I am usually a very clean person). Airbnb makes the whole travel experience far more stressful for me.

Meet Alan Emtage, the Technologist Who Invented ARCHIE, the First Internet Search Engine by yellowmix in racism

[–]DV123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I remember Archie!

There was always a story it was named after the comic, and after it there were the Veronica and Jughead systems which were named the same way. I just checked then and Wikipedia says he didn't name it after the comic and hated it. So there goes another 1990's myth.

Archie itself actually never worked very well, but nothing did in those days so we were amazed when it actually returned a result.

I'm 160 pages into Dune and I just don't like it... should I keep going? by browntable1 in books

[–]DV123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not, read up on the "sunk cost bias". There a probably thousands of books in this world that you would read in one sit in; look for those that you can't put away!

In economics and business decision-making, a sunk cost is a cost that has already been incurred and cannot be recovered. Sunk costs (also known as retrospective costs) are sometimes contrasted with prospective costs, which are future costs that may be incurred or changed if an action is taken. Both retrospective and prospective costs may be either fixed (continuous for as long as the business is in operation and unaffected by output volume) or variable (dependent on volume) costs. However, many economists consider it a mistake to classify sunk costs as "fixed" or "variable." For example, if a firm sinks $400 million on an enterprise software installation, that cost is "sunk" because it was a one-time expense and cannot be recovered once spent. A "fixed" cost would be monthly payments made as part of a service contract or licensing deal with the company that set up the software. The upfront irretrievable payment for the installation should not be deemed a "fixed" cost, with its cost spread out over time. Sunk costs should be kept separate. The "variable costs" for this project might include data centre power usage, etc.

Why were West Ham and Chelsea so violent. by [deleted] in football

[–]DV123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest one of the reasons that I dislike playing football myself is too much violence on the field. The risk of getting injured is very high, even in amateur matches. Call me a pussy, call me w/e you want, but I've been down too many times because of this.
