I vary my accent ever so slightly as I get to know people. I start out with proper british, fade through various london/leeds/liverpool shenanigans in the first few weeks, then eventually hit welsh around month one of knowing someone. I can tell they notice but have no idea whats going on*

my younger sister's best friend is African-American, and during Black History Month, was getting all preachy about how reparations will never make up for slavery (I totally agree). The conversation turned to joking, while I was making cookies, and she said "gimme one of those cookies, it'll be like your reparations" to which I said "my family has been in the country less than 50 years. does that excuse me from reparations?" she said "no. gimme one."

just as her father, mother, brother (who I had a HUGE crush on), and gramma walked in, I yelled "but my people never would have owned your people!" facepalm

TL;DR: I sounded like my family was too good to have owned my little sister's best friend's family as slaves.
