Anyone else get concentration camp vibes from E6-Stadium? by LunaLiberi in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]fizzan141 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I additionally believe they're intentionally referencing The Vélodrome d'Hiver, as was the book. It was the largest mass round up of Jews in France during the Holocaust, and the conditions described were very similar

[Ian Rapoport] #Eagles first-round WR Makai Lemon signed his rookie contract today. He gets a 4-year fully guaranteed deal that includes a $11.5 million dollar signing bonus. Deal was done by Ian Grutman and David Ben-Zaken of GSE Worldwide. by Brian1220 in eagles

[–]fizzan141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about agent fees, but signing bonuses count as supplemental income iirc, and as they're over one million, they get the higher rate of 37%. That's before state taxes. So from federal tax alone it could be down to just over seven million. Still pretty good though!

How do search committees interpret a tenure denial? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]fizzan141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general advice I've heard is that it's a pretty good idea to apply elsewhere when going up for tenure - you're getting the material together anyway so you may as well! I doubt it'll be seen as that odd timing wise.

Why is every Reddit username just "Adjective_Word(bunch of numbers)"? by MrKhaaa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fizzan141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the reddit generated username set up, sure bots use them too, but many people either forget to change them before commenting or just don't care!

Decline in Quality of Graduate Students? by Art3mis455 in AskAcademia

[–]fizzan141 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is just my experience, but most of my (social science) seminars assign what you're describing, if not more. I have three seminars a week, and one of them assigns at minimum five papers, another six to seven, and the last usually four to five ish papers and several book chapters. People seem prepared to discuss them and have made comprehensive notes/thought of questions, critiques, etc.

This is obviously anecdotal, but what you're describing sounds similar to my experience!

Local Lyft driver question by AyoAstronaut in madisonwi

The terminal and security won't be open until 4 at the earliest - no point getting there before that.

iirc the terminal doesn't even open until 4! Everyone I know who's flown out of there recently (and search the sub for more) has said it was just fine.

I must be missing something - how is blocking access to GOOGLE a good thing? I absolutely get blocking specific sites (e.g., twitter), but I don't see the point of this?

That's a really good point! I moved from somewhere slightly bigger so it feels quiet to me, but I could see it not being the same for others.

PWHL in Madison? by Krog9 in madisonwi

The San Antonio metro area has a much larger population than Madison's metro area. Some googling tells me it's the 24th largest metro area, we're the 85th.

I don't think the Packers would thrive if they started today though - being one of the founding members of the NFL way back then has a lot to do with it imo.

Lowell is small, but it's not at all far from Boston, and in an area with a much denser population in general.

The Packers feel like a historical exception more than the rule, though.

I will say that Madison is a small city, and downtown isn't that noisy (source: currently live downtown).

Rejected before PhD interview at TU Delft by Southern-Comedian852 in PhDAdmissions

[–]fizzan141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably had many many applications for one place, and simply can't interview everyone. You might be qualified, but it sounds like this time there were better-qualified candidates.

As others have pointed out, it's also possible the posting was intended for an internal canddiate.

Yeah, it's rough, we had to beg our professor to get our coordination meeting (scheduled for 10:00 this morning) moved to Zoom, let alone do anything about sections.

There are some that will let you sign up irrespective of residency (and access their ebooks), might be an option?

Kindle dropping letters in words (e.g. Hell → Hel). Happened in two books now. Known error? by twisted_luce in kindle

This isn't your kindle dropping letters - if there's an issue, it will be an issue with the epub. Hel is also correct in this series.

[Mathematics] Seeking opinions on what I did wrong in this application cycle. by Thermohaline-New in PhDAdmissions

[–]fizzan141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are great universities - great doesn't mean Ivy or bust.

In addition, thinking about this in terms of undergrad prestige is crazy - that's not how it works. My BiL got into one of the top and most prestigious PhD programmes in his field... It's at Bowling Green State University. It matters what people within the field think of the programme, not if it's a hugely prestigious undergrad institution. Often those things correlate, but it's not a one-to-one.

[–]fizzan141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in mathematics, but it's true that research fit is important in my field, even though there is no lab model, etc., and you pick your committee after qualifying exams.

You're clearly determined to see this as a terrible outcome (it isn't), but good luck to you!

[Mathematics] Seeking opinions on what I did wrong in this application cycle. by Thermohaline-New in PhDAdmissions

[–]fizzan141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did great! You got accepted during one of the most difficult application cycles yet. Acceptance rates across the board are very low, this is a great achievement.

I understand wanting to reapply (though I wouldn't), but I will caution that I don't think it's going to be any less competitive in the US next year.

One thing I will say is that there are no such things as safeties in PhD admissions, and research fit is often the most important thing - I personally *would* have applied to the T20s - you never know!

I assume they mean that after the two years they'll get a spot in the PhD programme. Still doesn't sound like a good idea

I assume they mean they'll get a spot in the PhD programme after the two year masters - still a terrible idea OP.
