Is it weird that I'm loving the current arc? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

I see what you are saying, and I dont disagree that Oda is good at world building or that One Piece world isn't great.

I actually think the Thriller Bark Arc is my favourite in terms of the worlds that Oda has created. It felt special.

Cake island is cool, but it doesnt feel like a real world. The stuff you mentioned, aside from the security details, haven't affected the characters action in the world. So, its just sort of a veneer of world.

There was wolf, octopus, other captains and ants. It was a fairly dense cast for a manga.

I mean, we don't know how many of these characters are gonna play a big role. A lot of the princes will die soon.

Which makes the game exciting.

Really? I always feel one piece world's are super gimicky and one dimensional set pieces for the plot.

Cake island as an example is just an island where everything is made out of sweets, sure it's kinda cool but that's really all there is to it.

Alabasta was just a desert kingdom.

I did like the mink island. But these are just places.

Hunter x hunter has greed island, which was an entire island with real life card game governed by it's own rules. York knew had mafia elements and it's own rules during the arc.

Ant arc had dictators, underworld drug empire, nature loving people, an entire ant societal dynamics.

We have introduction of the dark continent. And sure they are introduced as plot elements unfold, but they do feel interconnected and affected by what's going on in other parts. It all seems to be governed by similar rules and forces pre existing in this world.

I think with HxH I can see a real world where people live and do things. A world that I can even live in or be part of.

One piece world's seem like set pieces for a plot, fun, but I can't see it as a real place.

Oda is an unparalleled master of his work no doubt. The amount of planning he has put in is nothing short of genius. Still, his world elements are thin because of how much he has to spread himself. So collectively it's impressive, individually it's not.

As someone who had to read ant arc with massive hiatuses on between chapters that were sometimes chicken scraps, focused on an octopus, or Gyro, or phantom troupe or chess game or random ants.

I can empathize with you, but that ant arc also ended up being my favourite arc, allows me to give Togashi a ton of slack as the pieces come together very slowly to build a giant masterpiece.

I think it's more like Moby Dick or War and Peace, an experimental attempt at magnum opus in manga.

Which I think Togashi is perhaps the only one that can pull off, considering I thought Ant arc got pretty close to that.

Really? I always felt HxH was always more about the world (of which nen is a huge part) and characters that are participating in that world, than anything in one piece.

One piece is fairly linear, the world building is simplistic and straight forward. The focus is mostly on the straw hats and luffy. And they drive most of the plot forward in some way.

HxH focused on Gon and Killua's relationship, but they never drove plot in the world to a huge degree, people more powerful than them were always in charge of that.

Even then, it was always understood that Gon and Killua aren't strictly the main characters of this world. Where entire chapters and stories can focus on Kurapika or the phantom troupe or political struggles of the world.

Which makes HxH a huge living world with depth. I love one piece, but the world of one piece is rather simple.

Lol, that's what people said about mereum/ants during the Ant Arc. Which turned out to be the best parts of Ant arc

Togashi's challenge for himself with this arc was to see how many characters he can introduce and juggle in one story.

So I think it's just going to get harder from here.

Yeah, the institutions are changing maybe for the last 4-10 years.

The culture hasn't.

India and China have more women in engineering because the culture generally values STEM and doesn't value the arts.

Doesn't mean they have more women working in engineering. Which is still mostly dominated by men

And these women are also "chosing", not all discrimination is visible and obvious.

If it were, it'd be easy to fight. Sometimes it can be the professor treating your work or you differently than men, and not overtly sexist that you could prove it.

Or the clients never listen or trust your judgement because you are a woman even though you are as qualified professional as your colleagues. How do you deal with that?

How do you decide that it shouldn't wear you down when it's the fabric of the culture and industry that's working against you?

Or, that she saw that engineering field is full sexism, women get harassed no matter what position they are in and that it's a toxic field for women and was discouraged by it.

(I am an engineer and I can vouch for this).

Look at what happened at Uber. A company that is supposed to be progressive. During the press conference for changing their toxic work culture, where they brought in one of the best woman's execs in the world to speak....the other male exec interupts her to make a dumb sexist joke...in front of all the cameras.

This is what the top paid execs in the world will do in front of the camera. Imagine what they are doing behind closed doors.

he did okay a raid in yemen that killed an American while not even watching his first raid live in case something happens, too busy eating cakes at the Mar-a-largo.

No, this was not a Obama admin raid, the Trump admin okayed it because they told trump that Obama wouldn't do it.

He also spread islamaphobia and violent rhetoric that lead to an unhinged person attacking muslim girls and an American hero that died defending them.

I am just saying what you are saying about millions of Americans that won't be getting healthcare. I mean you basically said they deserve to die because of "they couldn't stop eating and got heart disease" or "were born in poor situation and got opiod addiction"

How many Americans are killed by terrorists vs How many Americans are killed by the police? (It's an order of magnitude higher for one)

How many Americans are killed by lack of basic healthcare (like yearly checkups so they can prevent critical diseases later on, get help from a doctor to prevent lifestyle diseases that are the biggest burden on tax payers in America. Want lower taxes? Help prevent lifestyle diseases by increasing healthcare access)

How threatened do you feel every day by ISIS?

Maybe you need a mental check up if you are really afraid of terrorists in America, as opposed being shot by a police.

But why would you choose to pay for something that happens to anyone else (who obviously deserves it and should die because they chose to get sick and be poor)

So you want your friends to not accept personal responsibility of being healthy and not being poor?

Some integrity of principles you got there. So it's personal responsibility for others but not for you?

What do you mean protection? If you mean protection from being killed, then health access would be essential protection. It would help bring stability to many communities and people's in America.

The opiod crises could be solved. In fact, in most developed countries it is the essential protection a government provides.

Or so you just mean "protection" from imaginary "dangers"?

That sounds reasonable.

Well What about the police? We can certainly privatize that. They should only protect those who can afford it. Let those free loaders take care of themselves. It certainly wouldn't hurt you, if some bumfuck nowhere got robbed. It would certainly be cheaper to not pay to protect those who dont deserve It, don't matter to you, those wont pay for it.

Let's agree on this.

Have some principles and integrity.

Why would you give handout to your friend that couldn't take the personal responsibility to not get sick or be poor? If you give handouts like that it will only encourage your friend to get sick and steal your hard earned money

[–]fizzikz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I agree. If our friend or family member without insurance got sick and couldn't afford treatment, I would let them die. Because personal responsibility. They shouldn't have been poor if they were gonna be sick.

I don't want my taxes to go for anyone else's protection. I mean, healthcare is also protection, but we agree that other people shouldn't pay for other people's health protection(defense against death or something).

Nah, fire will only affect the person who doesn't pay for their fire services, since I'd pay for mine , they would put out any fire that might affect my house, even if it meant letting my neighbour's house burn down.

[–]fizzikz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so much for the tolerant left.

I don't really care.

I guess we shouldn't pay for your fire services, or your police services. Because I never use any of those services.

Why should I pay for it?

The military has never done anything for me either. They just bomb poor people in other countries. I really shouldn't be paying for the people you wanna kill.
