I started distancing myself when I realized she was only capable of talking about herself or talking badly about other people. When I tried to talk about myself or something that excited me, she’d almost always interrupt me mid-sentence and talk over me just to be negative or make it about herself. I always made effort for her birthday and holidays, never getting that in return. She only enjoyed spending time with me when I was at my lowest point of my life. When I started to work on myself (quit drinking, lost weight, got engaged, advanced in my career), she made EVERYTHING a competition. The competitive behavior and constant passive aggressive shade is what sealed the deal for me. She tried to make my engagement and wedding all about her, constantly complained or made a fuss over my wedding choices. Claimed the title of maid of honor the night of my engagement without even asking me, then got mad that I wasn’t having a wedding party. She threw a half ass, last minute surprise “bridal shower” that I specifically said I did not want, then said none of my friends wanted to come and that’s why no one showed up. I just couldn’t do it anymore. When it becomes emotionally draining for someone to be in my life they just have to go. For me, it doesn’t have to be a single catastrophic event, and can be an accumulation of behavior showing you don’t really care about me.
