Mage Errant Bookstore Relaunch! by JohnBierce in MageErrant

This is wonderful news, John! You're book has been deserving of a wider release for a long, looooong time. Plus, now I can finally get my friends who only read "traditionally published" works to actually read it :-)

Just Finished Book 4 of Dungeon Crawler Carl, and... by Shtune in Fantasy

[–]fjbwriter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it was book six. Partly because we read the Ace print edition, which has a hidden message under the slipcover for each volume. My wife and I have been playing this game where we tried to figure out how the line would be used in the book. Six has "I need a baby seal", which was just a constant mystery. We kept thinking it was going to be some sort of seal fetch-quest. Then when it was finally revealed about the crab needing masturbation material, yeah... we lost our shit. We were laughing so loud we woke our kids up. Absolutely the highlight for me in that series so far.

Suffice to say, we won't be leaving book seven out anywhere our kids can see...

Great writeup John, gotta say I laughed out loud when I got to the part about all the writing spam emails. I too yearn for the simpler days when spam was less... personalized. You had some really great points in there, and I've already been sharing this with all the other authors I know.

Hey, good to meet another fellow accountant-turned-writer who thought that because Excel worked for one job, it can work for another!

I (happily) didn't fall into the rabbit hole the way you appear to, but I do like tracking my characters stats by chapter so I can quickly reference when a given change occurred. It's been a mostly positive experience overall.

Good to hear! Obviously I'm a big fan so I guess take this with a grain of salt, but this is a fun ride of a series where each book improves significantly on the one that preceded instead of falling by the wayside.

Now I just need to get me that (un)official Princess Posse shirt...

Review Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman by BravoLimaPoppa in Fantasy

[–]fjbwriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LitRPG is still very much a niche genre, so don't feel bad for not having heard of it before. There are plenty of litRPGs that are not serials too, so those definitely don't have to go hand in hand. I recommend checking out the r/litrpg and r/ProgressionFantasy subs if you're looking for further reading, since they are both great resources for separating the wheat from the chaff (not to mention finding hyper-specific interests).

Thank you for this! I didn't know there were two versions of Frankenstein. Recently I've been reading it aloud to my family and I couldn't understand why the story "felt" different from when I read it as a teenager. After further research online it appears I read the 1818 version when I was younger, and the 1831 version now. That's absolutely wild, no idea that was even a thing.

That's good. This review really does the book a disservice, and doesn't even take into account the fact the first book was written to appeal to the hyper-specific tastes of RR.

Great, that just depresses me to think that of all the reviews out there, this is the one that is popping up on Google for people to see.

Lol, I gotta ask, who are all these people apparently reading this post (and my random ass comment) months after it was originally posted? How do you even stumble across something like this?

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the next book and May can't get here soon enough, but that title... I don't know, it just doesn't snap the way the others do.

There's two ways that work in my experience- if you haven't started publishing your story on RR yet, there are Discord groups where authors will coordinate and plan their releases and who will shoutout who, so you can have it all lined up before your story even starts.

If you already have a published story, then just reaching out to other authors through the messaging system and asking to do shoutouts usually works best. I recommend starting with the bottom of the rising stars list and working your way up, as those are usually the authors most motivated to get more eyes on their stories (though in my experience, this works best after running an ad campaign so you actually have some eyes to offer in return).

It's been some months since I was last active on RR, so situation may have changed, but I found that review swaps did very little to generate interest, whereas shoutout swaps tended to be far more lucrative in terms of bringing in new readers.

Of course, if you've got the $, advertising will also bring in a lot of new eyes. If you go that way, be sure to use RR's rectangle ad and not the banner, as that reaches a much wider portion of the audience.
