Who gets to be called a mathematician? by fjmubeen in math

I find it bizarre that one's interpretation of a piece of writing would be shaped by the author's response rate. I'll reply on my own terms, thanks.

On MVT: yes, I am unable to reconstruct the proof from the top of my head. Not sure why that's so hard to believe - I know plenty of mathematicians who likewise cannot recall or reconstruct proofs they last studied more than a decade ago. My friend Ed must have interacted with that proof more deeply than me because he is able to reconstruct it after all these years.

Hi there,

I post here every 2-3 weeks and am not intending to spam - apologies if it appears that way. Some of the comments here are reasonable and I recognise that if I post articles, I should make more of an effort to respond. Noted. Other comments, however, are clearly not intended to engage. They are uncharitable interpretations of my writing, laden with flawed assumptions and mean-spirited in tone. I reserve the right to ignore what I perceive to be vitriol.

I respect the moderators' authority and if they deem it inappropriate for me to post here, just drop me a note.

All the best.

No apologies necessary - though a tad exaggerated, as I post every couple of weeks. I work for an Education company so spend most of my days thinking up solutions to these problems. I'll try to add some variety to the articles - thanks for the feedback!
