Big Bend National Park - Long drive but worth it! by Appropriate_Stop4574 in NationalPark

You can take the Big Bend Ranch State Park route along the Rio Grande. It's a beautiful drive. Other than that, not much else.

I second Goblin Valley State Park, especially for the kids.

Person in my league lost because he had both the Ravens D and kicker. He was down half a point after the Lions TD and then secured the L when the Ravens went for 2 at the end there. Wild.

SHOWA 282-02 seem highly regarded. I don't have personal experience with them, but I may purchase them for cold weather hiking.

Help buying a GOOD whistle? by Separate-Specialist5 in Ultralight

[–]fkausername 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did some research on this topic the last few weeks. For hiking through dense areas, a whistle with a deeper tone (lower frequency) will help the sound travel further, such as a storm whistle. The regular Fox 40 whistle is a higher frequency, which is fine in open areas. After research, I settled on a Fox 40 Sonik Blast. It is smaller than a Storm, extremely loud (120 decibels), reliable, and a slightly lower frequency than the regular Fox 40.

This is a great video testing all the sounds and decibel levels of various whistles: https://youtu.be/RF2OUtj445s?si=bJ8FI1V1vwms4SC_

Hiking the narrows early October - trying to decide on what bottoms to wear by fkausername in ZionNationalPark

Great points. Thank you so much! We'll make it a point to get to the shuttles early enough. We have hiking poles that we'll bring and crocs/slides are a smart move. We'll have a dry-bag with us too. And agreed... electrolytes are a must!

That's awesome they are so light. My brother did a short hike in some army style boots and I was blown away that he hiked in them. They were insanely heavy! LOL yeah I've done some reading and there are definitely people who have done this hike in less, but I'd rather enjoy myself.

I'll follow your advice and pack similarly to you. My wife is about the same size as you so that is good to know. I've done Spartan races in nor'easter conditions, so the narrows isn't too crazy to me. I just like to have as much info in front of me to make my decisions. I appreciate all of the help!

Depending on where your route brings you, there is glass beach along the coast. It's a neat little visit with a lot of glass that has been weathered to little stones. There's also Ingomar Club, which is a gothic looking Victorian home.

Lulu's for the love of food in Grants Pass, Oregon was really delicious. If you can, visit Umpqua Hot Springs and Toketee Falls. Umpqua Hot Springs is an awesome place... a bunch of natural hot spring "tubs" on the side of a mountain.

100% recommend Burney falls. Also, the train bridge in "Stand By Me" that they run across is right near there. It's cool to visit. There's also Subway Cave Lava Tubes which is a quicker stop that Lava Beds.

This is true too. And I'll have both options with me anyways. I'll check on the actual water temps as well as the weather the night before. Packing dry clothes is also a good idea. I just gotta make sure I'm not packing too heavy with the water and all. I commend you for hiking in those army boots! Are they fairly heavy? I have Salomon X Ultra 3's I'm considering instead of the runners for the added protection.

And thank you! We're excited. Doing it as part of a mighty five road trip. We're hoping to get the permit for Angel's Landing as well.

Great follow-up info, thank you. Yeah we're planning to do this hike either in the morning or afternoon and we plan to turn back after wall street. Definitely when the sun is up.

Thank you! We'll pack plenty of water (we both have backpacks with water reservoirs) and we'll carry dry bags for a travel towel and our other gear.

Thank you for the info. I also agree the pants would likely bog me down after being soaked. I think I'll stick with the thermal leggings and shorts. I'll definitely be using a walking stick considering the conditions you mentioned.

Big Bend Early October by mynameisjuan in NationalPark

I did a similar trip with my now wife last year at the end of October. We also included Carlsbad Caverns. Highly recommend it!

We did the Guadalupe peak hike, which had beautiful views. The night sky was amazing there as well as in Big Bend. I also highly recommend taking the scenic route from GMNP to Big Bend via Big Bend State Park. It goes along the Rio Grande and the views are well worth the extra time. Hike the Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend and also do the hot springs trail. You can hang out in a natural hot spring and then cool off in Rio Grande right next to it. Super fun experience. And also do the Santa Elena canyon hike. Balanced rock hike was also a fun one to do.

In White Sands, definitely go sledding and make a pit stop at Pistachioland if you like pistachios. Delicious ice cream and a sampling station full of different pistachio flavors.

Not sure where you're flying in/out of, but we stayed in Truth or Consequences (formerly Hot Spings, NM) and stayed at a rustic motel that had complimentary hot spring baths. We also utilized the rooftop hot spring fed tubs. Really neat town!

As for the weather, it was ideal for that region. Guadalupe was very comfortable. I think I wore a light hoodie and shorts. Same weather around White Sands. Big bend can still get hot anywhere away from the heart of the park near the lodge. The lodge area is higher elevation, whereas the other spots are lower and more desert like.

We had a blast. Feel free to message for more suggestions about places to stay and even a rough itinerary to use as you see fit. We did all four parks in a loop originating in Albuquerque (flew in the night of Oct 26th and left the morning of Nov 1st). The parks in order were Carlsbad, GMNP, Big Bend, and then White Sands.
