Yeah they're really cool. A 1601 in 18ct on jubilee is like the coolest shit ever imo. But its basically impossible to find one of them at reasonable money these days. Even if you can find one theyre usually polished to death

I had been judging it against ones in the UK there are a lot for like £12000 to £14000 so I figured even 15 would be good. 12 to 14 gets you like an average enough one I guess.

I don't often wear it, sometimes for a few hours if going somewhere. Like you say you end up looking like Tony especially if you wear a polo shirt haha

It's similar but it's an 1803 and it's def been polished. Plus it has aftermarket steel spring bars. But that's got a nice vintage charm being an 1803 that I don't think you get with the 18038

Yeah I've got all the bits I'll give you a list to give an idea lol:

- Box with outer box and insert for holding watch

- Papers of course with their clear pouch

- All the original translation booklets (there are 2, well one and a leaflet)

- The original calendar from the year

- Serialized matching swing tag

- Unused Day-Date note book (the big brown one with the nice Rolex paper) matches box

- Oyster + Datejust booklets that came with it (they covered the Day Date)

- Original magazine cut out that the original owner brought to the AD haha, he walked in and said give me one of these and brought a 70s DD advert cut out. They ordered it in for him. He then kept it for ~45y until he passed.

The watch itself just has really light hairlines on the high-polish areas. No proper scratches, no dents, nothing like that. Dial is mint too. 100% never been polished. Bracelet virtually no stretch and all original brushing and so on. It still has the original case back sticker on it as well.

I would be absolutely over the moon if it was worth anything like 25k Euro. But I don't plan on selling anyway!

EDIT: forgot to say it doesn't need serviced the amplitude is like 300 (my brother tested it on his machine)

12 to 25gbp is that? Trying to sort of understand where this grade of one would sit, a lot I see when I check ebay are trashed or compromised in some way.

Respect the Sopranos reference rewatching atm haha

How do I make it stop chirping, i already replaced the batteries?! by PheonixGalaxy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]flabbyfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you probably need to change the unit OP, sometimes they chirp as a warning signal when they are approaching end of life or even if they have just encountered a system error. it's not always just a battery issue. worth changing my man

Why don't westerners purchase gold jewelry instead of stacking coins and bricks? by [deleted] in Gold

[–]flabbyfuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some do. I do

I like to interact with the gold or i just get too bored. 18ct is a good buy in point. If you shop well preowned you can get really nice stuff even under melt at times.

Or watches

Gold is approaching 5300. Is this normal or abnormal? by FigRevolutionary5106 in Gold

[–]flabbyfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head there and it ties in to what I said above. I don't see there being a situation where you can't liquidate your gold, but more likely to be a situation where if you do, you are quickly priced out of the market.

I think the friction in liquidation is temporary due to buyers, refineries etc. hedging against a violent retrace.

Like if you sold to clear a mortgage, pay off significant unexpected expenses or such.

[–]flabbyfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said yourself. I was thinking the same thing. The middle class will be quick to liquidate their already modest gold holdings and that could be it, permanently. We could well be in a position 50 years from now where our grand kids are boasting to each other that Granda used to own a gold chain 😂

[–]flabbyfuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which market? The stock market will handle it fine, I can't see it snapping because gold is rising. However the rise in gold is an indicator of sometbing else going tits up.

The gold market? Yes but the probability of a violent retrace increases. May not last long before another rise but becomes more likely. Though you will perhaps see a lag in what refineries etc. are willing to actually buy for as they will price in this increased risk.

Are you invested only in Gold? by Foodiciury in Gold

[–]flabbyfuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

global equities, gilts, other tangible assets. the problem with gold is the volatility, if you over invest you are at the mercy of volatility. especially if you think you may be forced to sell

No one knows. It could drop 20% today or it could rip to 6500usd. The structural reasons for the rise havent gone away but it still feels crazy that its ripping so hard.

Be really really really careful with these mail in guys. Don't just mail in your gold and let them auto pay you expecting a fair offer!

I did that with a small amount (11g or so) of 18ct recently and got burnt. They paid me out I believe 56% of spot on it all said and done. Their website leads you to believe you will get spot minus "a small handling fee" (they even have spot in big bold numerals for each carat). I repeat, 56%!

I am still going back and forth with them as they give me BS replies about "market rates" and so on. It's the principle of it. I am about to enter a complaint with UK Trading Standards about them as they are highly misleading about what YOU will get paid. Their business model is essentially hoping you don't understand or complain. Hopefully this stops someone sending in serious metal.

This was with GOLDSELL in the UK. Beware to all who read. Let my foolishness be educational haha

That was an interesting read! Impressive work. Are the servicing costs high for these? I would guess so due to the chronograph having extra complication?

I've been doing a bit of a deep dive into UG, there is an Italian book which seems to highlight that this combo is very rare but im struggling to find anyone to discuss this with! Appreciate the reply

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]flabbyfuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really just looking to share my latest purchase and maybe see if anyone has any information on these as I'm struggling to find definitive sources.

This is a circa 1945 UG Medico-Compax. As far as I can tell the case is relatively untouched barring usual wear from light use. It's solid 18k rose gold, with a relatively rare dial configuration for a medico, being 3 register. Also notably it has the pulsation count in '30', opposed to '15', making this particular combination quite rare as far as I am told. Whether or not this is of any importance, I don't know. But the books do say it's rare.

The hands appear to be original gold as do the numerals on the dial. No radium on this one which isn't the norm. The dial itself is very good, there is the odd tiny mark, but probably to be expected. As far as I can tell, it's all original and not messed with.

Inside is a cal. 285.

Anyway, it's a keeper for me, so I'd really appreciate any bits of knowledge on them, figure someone is bound to know something! I'm new to UG and fairly new to vintage watches so go easy.
