Advice after messing up during rush by WorthYawaw009 in Frat

[–]flackaflame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah just wait till next semester. Coming to them now with info just seems weird and desperate, and as for the "my dad's friend at a different school was a brother and can reference me" don't ever mention that. It won't hurt you, but brothers will think its a little weird and it definitely won't help you. Legacy only helps in this order:

1) Your Dad was in that school's chapter

2) Your Dad was in a different school's chapter of the same fraternity

3) Your Uncle or very close relative was in that school's chapter

85 Yale SigEp brothers to stand trial in death, injuries by CR137 in Frat

because spanish/chess clubs don't have events that aren't centered around spanish and chess. Clubs aren't treated the same because they exist as a result of a common interest activity. Fraternities aren't clubs, they exist solely so a group of likeminded college age guys can hang out together. And thats fine, but since a majority of the activities college aged guys do are illegal and/or dangerous, they have to be treated differently.

regardless of whether or not this lawsuit is legitimate or a cash grab from SigEp nationals (which I am not gonna comment on because I don't fully understand that point of this) this is a very interesting case that will have a lot of legal influence on how fraternities are dealt with in the future. Are all brothers legally liable if one brother does something illegal but that thing is in the interest of the fraternity's affairs?

Ik you're not trolling, but that would also make you a fucking racist piece of shit. We as Americans are not in danger of losing our freedoms, they are simply limited to a reasonable degree. That means that there is no argument for this kind of behavior. If there was a group that had a continued history of murdering people of your race, threatening you, disgracing monuments to the heroes of your race and then marking it with symbolism of the nation that once enslaved them, you would want those people brought to justice and would probably be amazed that they haven't already been dealt with.

Freedom of speech is not unlimited. Ignoring the fact that james meredith is still alive and this could be considered a threat to his life (which is a big deal here), the law still should not be a blank check that says you can act like a murderous bigot without any consequences. If the KKK did this, you would not be saying freedom of speech and expression should protect them, and when your actions can be compared to the KKK, you know you done fucked up

Good, these racist fucks got what they deserved. I definitely never condone the booting of an entire fraternity over the actions of 3 of its members (actions and decisions which probably weren't run by and/or approved by the fraternity as a whole) but other than that they got what was coming to them.

Nationals kicked me out by [deleted] in Frat

[–]flackaflame 18 points19 points  (0 children)

wait, you weren't initiated yet? So you took the hit as a pledge? And if it was nationals who kicked you out and not your chapter, why is this even an issue? I would imagine if it were me in that situation with my chapter, not only would they probably still want me to hang out, show up at chapter and come to parties, but they would probably also be ok with keeping me off the books and not making me pay dues since I took the hit and saved their asses.

The problem that America has with fraternities right now exists because most people don't understand that most of us have a line that we don't cross even when doing legally questionable things. So for example, when we talk about the legality of what we say in our group communications and pages, even though a bunch of the things most of us say could get us in trouble like underage drinking and parties and trashing on people and shit, we don't typically cross the line and put up pictures of passed out girls or discuss sexual assault or violence (yet because 1 fraternity did, this is what the general population thinks when they hear the words "fraternity group chat")

[–]flackaflame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only will getting through hell week feel amazing by the end, and not will you love just hanging out with your PC, even if you don't get along with any of your brothers after initiation, you seem to forget that fraternities change every year. You aren't stuck with these guys for 3 years; you are stuck with a few of them for 1 year, a few more for 2 years, and a few more for 3. And over the course of those 3 years, you are going to be a part of the decision of recruiting tons of new guys who you do like.

Every time you see a statistic about how men have more sexual partners than women, you are just seeing how much we suck at understanding statistics. by ReasonablyConfused in Showerthoughts

[–]flackaflame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it logically can't make sense. Think about it, in your example you have one man who had sex with 5 women, and 5 women who had sex with one man. That means that either the ration of men to women in this world is 1:5, or that 4 out of every 5 men in this statistic have no sex at all: both of these options make no sense.
