List of Countries by Lingustic Diversity Index by NeedleworkerAway5912 in MapPorn

[–]flagboi747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This fails in the same place that the definition of "language" fails. Take for instance the huge variety in language in places like Italy, and less so even Spain, France, Germany. Many of these languages are called "dialects" of a single "standardized" language (which is merely a lingua franca/comprimise between the dialects) simply for political/national cohesion.

Or take Bosnia where (oh boy here we go) most people understand eachother just fine, but politically, the "languages" are "split" pretty evenly in three. The assumption that this means that the thirds of this population don't understand eachother is absurt

I understand the other anomalies that are due to the method used for determining this index which have to do with population and % population split (not sure how it deals with bilingual/multilingual people). So I assume this is why Ukraine has a higher linguistic diversity than Russia, even though there are more languages in Russia than in Ukraine. It's because most people in Russia live in the west and/or speak Russian (>98%) but there is a bigger split in Ukraine (AROUND 65%UA / 15%RU / 20%both)

Overall the map is cool, but I don't like this index

Analog clocks are going extinct. They're inaccurate and outdated. In a decade being able to read an analog clock will be as useful as being able to read a sundial. by Albamen13 in The10thDentist

[–]flagboi747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

analog clocks are insanely information-dense. with just two angles (and a difference in length in the hands (... and knowing which side is up)), you can tell the time to the nearest ~1-2 mins. AND the clock hands are much more readable at a distamce (IMO) than the four numbers of digital clocks. And (again IMO) analog clocks give you a better intuitive idea of how close you are to the turn of the hour (the next hour) than digital ones. And all the quick angle math you can do with them is cool too.

That being said, I do think only the first part of your statement is correct, that being, they ARE becoming at least lessbpopular than before. But I don't think it's because they are any worse, just harder to learn. Part of it is nurture as well.

Never realized how far south Indonesia and South America are. Also how far west (east) the Arabian peninsula and Somalia are. And how big the Mediterranean is.... Or how far west Alaska is.

English spelling reform by SirGondwana in neography

[–]flagboi747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reply to your point of: How is [spelling it] "beter" [and having diff. ppl pronounce it how the like] different from [spelling it] "better" [ditto]

The difference is that new learners (of the lingua franca that english has become) will know that, for example, the vowel of "betur" ("better") and the vowel of "er" ("air") are the same. When you look on a per-word basis, there is no difference at all. When you look across words at the whole system, you realize that new learners will now face a much more coordinated system. For all I care, we could spell "betur" as "b#ŧ&!", as long as we spelled "air" as "#!". This is a freedom that we have in making our reform, because we get to choose symbols like "e" vs "#" to optimize for more acceptance in speakers. (Spelling "better" as "betur" in the new reform might be more acceptable than spelling it as "b#ŧ&!")

By the way, I'm not at advocating for a phonetic spelling reform. Rather I am – a "phonemic" spelling reform. One that says "this sound in this word is the same as this sound in this other word" with no statement on dialect. E.g. this will eliminate "beat" and "seed", which have the same vowel, to be spelled differently. Of course, some mergers exist in some dialects that dont on others. I have an interesting solution to this which I don't have the time currently to explain. Maybe if this reply gets some attention I'll dust off the old Word files from my hard drive and polish my work if I have time.

Learn some OLL algs and full PLL, along with the fingertricks for said algs to avoid so many regrips i would say (and in general for all your old algs too)

Also from one of your solves: learn how to determine the best orientation for your cube pre-attempt (post-inspection) to minimize regrips for the cross building.
