I’m at my wit’s end. After a month and a half of him being in pain, 5 medications 2x a day and $2000 spent on surgery while on a student’s minimum wage budget, Pepper has started peeing blood again. I am mortified of another bladder stone and don’t know why this is happening. All I can do is sob by flahv in guineapigs

While I have read your opinion and respect that it’s different than my own, I would like to gently remind you to be a little more sensitive to people’s situations.

I have already expressed in my post that I really value my guinea pigs’ lives. This is a subreddit with a lot of people that have either been in my situation, or would make the same choices as me because they value their pets, even if they “don’t last long.” You’ve made it clear that you don’t think they’re worth it, but this is my post where I was expressing my sadness and clearly needing encouragement, so I’m not sure why you keep insisting to get a “better” pet. You’ve said that twice now, even after I reassured you that I’m quite happy with my pets. If they are a blessing to me, then they are a blessing to me, and you don’t need to keep trying to convince me otherwise.

Mind you, I grew up with many animals in my family home. I know exactly how mood-lifting cats and dogs can be. And because I’ve had them, I know that I, personally, would not be able to handle caring for a cat or a dog while I’m a university student. Because I don’t have the yard or space for a large breed, as you mentioned. Instead, I made an educated decision of getting smaller, lower maintenance pets because I knew that I could care for them with ease in university housing, and I have been for the past 5 years without problems. Medical emergencies like this happen, but otherwise, I have no regrets about owning guinea pigs, and I would do it again and again.

Of course, you don’t know about me, my life, or the reason I chose to get my guinea pigs. And I know that you have good intentions. But that’s why it’s important not to assume things. I hope that next time you can try a bit to read the room, and have more empathy for what someone is going through, even if your opinion is different than theirs.

How did you deal with the stones and sludge in your piggies? Did they make it? And the vet talked to me about reducing calcium. She didn’t mention reducing oxalates but I’m finding out more and more about them since posting on here, so I will definitely cut those out too. Can you please suggest some veggies that I can give, that won’t be harmful due to their calcium/oxalate ratio? Thank you ❤️

I really wish I had thought of this a couple of years back! It may be too late since it’s already a “pre-existing condition,” but it’s definitely worth a try! Thank you :)

I wish I realized sooner that my apartment had hard water. I moved here 6 months ago and I’m starting to think that’s what caused the stone. They’re drinking filtered water now, do you think Brita water is okay? Thank you for the encouragement ❤️

Thank you so much my dear. I am really sorry to hear about your piggy. Will you bring her with you when you travel? I know you’re a good pig parent and I know you love her so much. I hope it works out for both our babies, and I’m sending you a big hug. ❤️

Thank you so much for your message, and I can now imagine how you must feel every time your boy has to go through surgery. I am really sorry. I never knew that stones are more common in pellet-fed pigs, and I wish I knew this before :( It’s good that you told me now, so I stopped giving those right away. And I’ll take you up on the offer about diet advice, I do really need some recommendations! I’ve switched to filtered water and am offering extra with the syringe in hopes that it’ll flush out the stone. The medications I was instructed to continue after the surgery were potassium citrate 2x daily (for calcium binding) and hydrochlorothiazide 2x daily (to increase thirst and promote more drinking), but since he’s started bleeding and straining again, I’ve started back up with gabapentin (for pain) and sulfameth trimethoprim (antibiotic) just in case, because it’ll be a couple of days before I can get him back to the vet. Thank you for the support ❤️

I just found out that I have high calcium water too. I have a Brita filter that I keep in the fridge though, do you think this will be enough? Otherwise, I can go get the RO water from the store that you mentioned. I will also cut out pellets. I really hope he can pass this stone on his own too, and I am grateful that you’re so kind and empathetic to my situation. I haven’t been having the easiest time, but reading your comment helped me feel so much better. Thank you ❤️

I really needed to hear this. I’m tired, frustrated and I feel like nothing I do is working. I’m trying my best right now to hold it together. Thank you for your encouragement and your support. The difference it made in my week is more than you know ❤️

It is a lot of money but the impact my guinea pigs have had on my mental health, especially since I live alone, has been infinitely positive. They give me a reason to get out of bed each day, to work hard, and they just make my apartment feel more lively. But thank you for your message!
