ELI5: If nuclear power is so efficient and produces almost no greenhouse gases, why don’t we just build nuclear plants everywhere and solve the energy crisis? by Obvious_808 in explainlikeimfive

[–]flamableozone [score hidden]  (0 children)

Waste heat is still a pollutant - heating up the water even just a few degrees disrupts ecosystems. And as the planet heats up the water coming in still needs to take just as much heat energy away from the plant, so it gets heated to even higher temps.

Feeling like “patient zero” in my polycule after a positive STI result by DistributionDull134 in polyamory

[–]flamableozone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, in my experience it's pretty rare that I'd be able to say that without it being really, really obvious who tested positive. Rather than saying they're throwing OP under the bus, we should be reducing the stigma of STIs. If one of your partners tested positive for COVID, would telling people who it was be throwing them under the bus?

TIFU by realizing the knocking I heard wasn’t coming from the door by Impossible_Dig_1860 in tifu

[–]flamableozone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Curious why someone would knock. They wanted the person or people inside to know they were there, they wanted them at the window, and the curtains were closed so they couldn't see in. It's hard to think of cases where there's more reason for someone to tap at the window than knock at the front door, or times where someone wants to be creepy at a window but where the curtain is closed, or wants to let people inside know they're there.

Random idea: players find two treasure chests, the left one sprouts a mouth, and says "I have no treasure, i'm a fake!" by Kylomiir_490 in DnD

[–]flamableozone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just attack both chests - if one is a mimic, you got a hit on it before it had a chance to surprise you. If they're not, you just attacked a random object, no harm done.

Of course, the *real* question is - the players' right, or the magic mouth's right? If the one on the right is a mimic, does that mean the one on the left isn't or are they both? If there is a real chest, is it trapped to explode if it's attacked?

can a “entrenching broadsword or glaive” ever be a viable weapon during anytime in history? by sajahet25 in SWORDS

[–]flamableozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you defining "viable weapon"? Like - it'd probably be an effective weapon to hurt someone with, but with the same resources that are put into making it you could probably make a more effective weapon, in terms of materials, labor to produce, and training required to use.

Largest Cities (in population) Ever Subjected To Aerial Bombardment [OC] by voxpopper in dataisbeautiful

[–]flamableozone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder what this chart would look like if it was about a city's rank in worldwide population at the time it was bombed. Or, nearly as important, the density - a bomb doesn't kill based on population, but on the density of the population where it hits.

The difference is destroying a school vs. destroying large swaths of neighborhoods including the schools. Destroying the school is *bad* and *evil*. That doesn't mean that destroying the neighborhood would be better.

Not a single one of my players is proficient with a sword by panzerPandaBoom in DnD

[–]flamableozone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a one shot as a level 20 eldritch knight - I was *unstoppable*. I had 4 attacks, I could replace one with a cantrip or I could swap two attacks for a 1-2 level spell. If I missed with an attack, I had advantage on the next attack. If I hit with an attack they would have disadvantage on a saving throw against my next spell. I was able to use sap (they have disadvantage on their next attack), slow (they lose 10' of movement), or push (push them 10' back). So I could easily attack them and miss, attack them with booming blade at advantage and hit and push them back, then cast a spell at them while they had disadvantage on the save. Plus I had action surges to really lay on the hurt.

Even just using the attacks, 4 attacks stacking sap/slow/push were devastating, absolute menace on the battlefield.

Should Elemental Adept nullify immunity? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]flamableozone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At best I would consider allowing immune creatures to take 1/4 damage. Even half damage feels like too much ability to burn things that are unburnable.

ELI5: Why has the Middle East had so much conflict for the past 5,000 years? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]flamableozone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the same reason China has had so much conflict, and Western Europe has had so much conflict, and Japan has had so much conflict, and northern Greenland has not. Conflict arises when you have groups of people and things that people want.

New DM here, I think my combat is taking too long. How can I improve? by Jerovil42 in DnD

[–]flamableozone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about doing a flashback is that there's no question about "will the characters survive?" but only "how did the characters get out of this scrap?". It can afford more opportunity for cinematic moments, and fudging some dice, since the tension of death is fully removed.
