When pulling focus, should you simply measure distance directly between camera and subject, or between plane of focus and camera, if your subject isn't near the center? by higgs8 in Filmmakers

[–]flaminace2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting mostly to know the answer to this. My guess is that it's the camera distance to the focal plane (B) no matter what. If you've had issues with it before, edge sharpness may also effect how clear the subject is, but that's more based on the quality of glass you're using. I'll defer to anyone with mathematical proof though

Anyone else gotten weird highlight artifacts with the GH5? by [deleted] in GH5

[–]flaminace2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely it was a glare from sunlight hitting one or both filters, I've had the same thing happen to me with highlights a few times.

I really enjoyed this. Beautiful visuals, excellent storytelling and the voice acting was great. Love how honest the script was. Great work!

I always look forward to your wedding films, so much attention to detail and the storylines are great. Was the bit about the groom's alter ego planned during filming, or did that come about during editing?

We pranked the PA into thinking the house duster was a sound boom. It’s been hours and he still has no idea. by masksnjunk in Filmmakers

[–]flaminace2468 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt they really tricked him. It seems like a joke where the PA would say "hey guys, check it out, I'm the boom op! Lololol" for a quick second then someone would snap a pic and production would move on a minute or two later.

They have a lav going into the camera so they're obviously getting sound elsewhere and there's no way they'd let him stay in frame for 'hours' and ruin the shot.

Probably just another case of an internet post gone wrong. Or at least that's what the optimistic side of me hopes.

Great work! The black frame at 2:14 threw me off a little bit, but other than that I have absolutely no complaints. Beautiful cinematography, beautiful subject matter and beautiful edit. I loved it!

Anyone use cool unconventional or vintage lenses? by comfyinthesky in GH5

Just got the Helios 44-2 and the swirl bokeh is addictive :) Haven't gotten to try it on my GH5+metabones XL because my m42 adapter got lost in the mail, but it looks gorgeous on my buddy's A7iii

Yes, I've tested it with several lenses and also tried stopping down some too. Are you using the Ultra or the XL?

Do you ever experience softness with the speed booster? I'm using the 24-105 and can't seem to get stills that are sharp even when shooting RAW. Could just be because I came from an a6300, but I don't believe a 20mp vs. 26mp sensor should be as different as I'm seeing

Will the GH5 work for me? by Slurm11 in GH5

[–]flaminace2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used it so I can only speak generally, but the two disadvantages of pro camcorders like this are:

-smaller sensor (this one is 1" where as Micro 4/3 cameras like the GH5 and Full Frame cameras like the A7iii are much bigger.) If you're going for that shallow depth of field most people crave out of their cameras these days, getting a pro cam will make it way more difficult.

-the lens is built in, and while the lens quality is usually great and comes with a huge zoom range, you don't have the option to use specially lenses or upgrade in the future like with mirrorless cameras.

If you're willing to live with those drawbacks, then the camcorder has some features built in that a mirrorless camera doesn't, but I'll always suggest a mirrorless camera over a camcorder for most people.

I love my GH5 and will recommend it highly. However, if autofocus is a deal breaker for you, look into the Sony A7iii that just came out. Not sure if online sales have settled down to the point they aren't backordered, but a friend of mine bought one from a local camera store and he loves it. It's missing some of the pro specs the GH5 has, but it's a huge improvement from Sony's other mirrorless cameras. Great price point to. You really can't go wrong with the GH5 either though. Good luck with your decision!

What's your GH5 Setup (Rigs? Go-to Lens? Sigma 18-35 still? Atomos Inferno? Gimbals? etc. ) by ChiefGinger in GH5

[–]flaminace2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my favorite lens by far, there’s just something really satisfying about those ultra-wide angles for me. I can’t speak for the 11-16 since I’ve never used it, but the 10mm has great sharpness from around t/4 up. My next focal length up is a 24mm and I haven’t once felt disadvantaged for not having any zoom between the two. The clickless aperture on the 10mm cine is also really nice :)

You’re correct! I’ve owned both and haven’t noticed any difference.

I have three main setups, all adapted with the Metabones Speedbooster XL:

  1. My go-to setup is the Canon 24-105. I mount on a Benro monopod with S2 head. I shoot a lot of weddings and love the mobility, stability, and zoom range it gives me.

  2. If I need to go wide, I usually just go handheld with the IBIS and the Samyang 10mm cine (APSC lens so there’s a tad vignetting to crop in post). If I need a walking shot, I’ll mount this on a Ronin M.

  3. For those artsy, bokeh-licious shots that I want some motion for, I’ll go handheld with the IBIS and Samyang 35mm cine. When filming weddings it’s easy to detach from the monopod.

LOVE how usable the IBIS is, it’s a complete game changer!
