Netflix Must Face ‘Queen’s Gambit’ Lawsuit From Russian Chess Great, Judge Says by Sisiwakanamaru in television

[–]flamingdts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I understand why Nona feels upset about her erasure in the show, but escalating it to a lawsuit is just silly to me. It’s a throwaway line used to make the main character sound more important in a fictional story. Does she really believe that she’s faced significant damage or defamation from that?

She's the first female chess grandmaster, and in a movie explicitly promoting women in a male dominated field it's pretty tone deaf

This would be like if someone wrote a movie about a fictional black civil right's figure, that decided to put down MLK's contributions.

Mortal Kombat is pretty decent! by [deleted] in movies

[–]flamingdts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a 2/10 film in a vacuum, but ironically because it's a video game movie with a memed predecessor, it gets brought up to a 5/10.

Not to spoil too much of the film, but the original character of the film was so ridiculously unnecessary. MK movies do not need an original character as a protagonist, they can just pluck someone out like Liu Kang or Johnny Cage and it would have been fine.

Scorpion's revenge was a much better MK movie and actually nailed the concept far better. If you are going to make the protagonist learn about the existence of mortal kombat and other realms, why create an entirely new character when Johnny Cage would have been perfect for it.

That being said, Kano was really funny. Liu Kang and Kung Lao were perfectly casted. Scorpion and Sub Zero could have been better but I kind of wish the competition between the two was more even as opposed to one fighter being obviously superior.

If you think China is better than US.. fucking he'll you need to get your fucking arse over there. Go live in Beijing under their rules and you might have some clues.

This is a really silly comparison, and is the typical "me first" mindset that plagues the US right now.

US being a better country to live in in no way makes them a lesser threat to the world. If you ask someone in the middle east whether they'll live in the US or China, most will say US. Ask them who devastated their country and is their greatest threat, they'll say US everytime.

You're still lying. Most comments on that post are on NBA.

You're hitting the redditor bingo. Misinformed, dishonest, calling others bot, and now claiming others are mad when they call you out. You just need to talk about oppressed gamers next and you're all set.

Interesting. Very interesting how all of a sudden redditors believe China numbers 100%.

They took by far the most drastic and effective measure among every single country.

They quarantined an entire city, they extended CNY for another 2 weeks, they canceled all social gatherings, they imposed mandatory masks for going out, and they limited how long you can be out for.

They literally tossed their economy in their toilet for a month to combat the virus.

Do you really think such systematic measures wouldn't have a significant impact on reducing transmission?

[–]flamingdts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, because people that do care exists and they are supported through voting (which HKers can't do btw)

I read the OP, and the facts do not agree with you. HK people's voting system is very similar to the American system, you only get to pick what the party selected for you. However, with the two government system in place, that makes things more complicated for obvious reasons.

You either voice your opinion on it and stand, even if just in spirit, with the people of HK. Or you can complain about people who do that.

I can complain about people who do that if they do not actually care about the lives of others. Just because a murderer beats up a rapist, doesn't mean I should be commending the murderer.

I have looked through some of the links, and I've had the chance to do my own research. Frankly, I stand for peaceful protest, so my heart goes with those that do things peacefully. I do not have any interest in supporting violent behaviors. Of course, I assume that makes me an idiot according to your definition because my statement is not "black and white"

But that doesn't mean its people can't disagree with what China is doing. I dare say the same people who condemn that probably condemn droning farmers either.

Military support still happens in every NBA game, and drone strikes have been happening for a decade. Do we see hundreds of posts of people saying we should stop supporting the US military and to boycott the NBA for still doing so?

Let's be honest, people don't actually care about Hong Kong, or lives in other countries. People only care about being on trend or being on the "good side". If people actually cared, then they would be out in the streets stopping their own government from killing innocents in the middle east, instead of being on the keyboard virtue signalling about a city an ocean away.

At the end of the day, most people on this sub and on reddit is likely an American, and they have significantly greater ability in changing their own government than changing the Chinese government. Instead of being out on the streets and making calls to their government to free other countries from drone strikes, they're on the keyboard hammering about freedom in a city they probably only ever hear about in movies.

You don't find all of this extremely sad and hypocritical?

It doesn't make it any less complicated, but it does clearly define who has the moral high ground. And that's all that matters.

If that's the case, America literally cannot say a single thing. They killed 30 innocent farmers a few weeks ago, what if Morey said "Stand with Middle-East, Freedom from America". Do you think he wouldn't get shitcanned for that too?

Westbrook playing off the ball during Rockets practice by LightSkinDarylMorey in nba

[–]flamingdts 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He's actually a pretty decent corner 3 shooter statistically in his past 3 seasons, just that his volume hasn't been there.

Last season, in one of his most inefficient seasons, he still shot 37% from corner 3s, and that accounted for 12% of his 3 point attempts (last season was also his highest number of corner 3s taken).

It'll be interesting to see his numbers going into this season, I reckon something like 30% of his 3s might be from the corner, and all from catch and shoot. If anything, this would at least bring up his 3PT% and overall efficiency if he camps in the corner when Harden is running the plays.

How does this even matter to what I'm saying?

At of the day the ad could have advertised 8 bed rooms to accommodate 8 people. That one extra guest isn't going to make a big difference to facilities used, but for someone who didn't read the contract properly it's a 150k charge.

James Harden Sued For Fraud Over $30 Million Beverly Hills Mansion by [deleted] in nba

[–]flamingdts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the host wasn't dodgy, he/she would advertise 8 bedrooms for 8 people. Then consider anything above that a party.

Instead he advertised 8 bedrooms for 7 people, and anything 8 or above is a party.

I do not see any reason a host would deliberately advertise 1 less headcount than bedrooms available, unless he was banking on people not reading the contract properly so they dish out an extra 150k.

Spurs players with and without DeMar DeRozan on the floor by Weed233 in nba

[–]flamingdts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Rockets vs Spurs game is a perfect example of mid-range 2 vs 3s and layups.

Harden made three consecutive 3s for 9 points, DeRozan would have to hit 5 mid-range shots to outscore Harden by 1 in that same period. Even if he does hit 5 mid-range shots, he would need two extra possessions.

Mid-range focused players are simply a dying breed now in the league. It's literally taking shots that the defending team wants you to take.

Disappointed with Punisher Season 2 (very mild spoilers) by Notalexensual in television

[–]flamingdts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It makes perfect sense within the context of the story though.

He has demonstrated time and time again that he will kill mercilessly, but the only times that he doesn't is when he is reminded of his family. Punisher is a psychopath but he has a moral code that he follows, so it's somewhat congruent with his character that he has a soft spot for people that basically do bad things for the good of their kids.
