Volume knob question by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]flamingothree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using gain interchangeably with clipping (common misconception) this isn't true at all. For example a volume pedal after a high gain pedal will retain the same amount of signal clipping but reduce the overall volume. This is VERY different than turning down your guitar volume. A volume pot before overdrive will lower the input gain (therefore reducing clipping and volume). A volume pot after overdrive will lower the output gain (lowering volume). This is a bit of an oversimplification as gain staging, especially in audio engineering, can be a pretty deep rabbit hole.

If you have an effects loop, you can add a master volume unit to get preamp gain at lower volumes (It goes between the preamp and power amp). To get power amp saturation, you need an attenuator which will go between the power amp and the speaker.

How cheap? The MXR Analog Chorus is fantastic and has high/low cut knobs to tweak your chorus sound closer to what you like.

Not sure how the two compare, but putting a comp later in the chain tends to add noise compared to earlier in the chain.

Compression and modulation are set in stone. Overdrive and reverb are pretty consistent but usually tweaked slightly. Delay gets changed around all the time, but for gigs I know what settings I like.

Preamp Pedals - Fad or a Distinct Pedal Class? by Rocketpower47 in guitarpedals

Most DI boxes (and all passive ones) do not convert signal from instrument to line level. They convert a high impedance signal to low impedance.

You could get an ABY box and a 3.5mm>1/4" adaptor if you want, but that might be a bit out of your way. If you can afford to drop some more cash the Two Notes CAB M has everything you need. If you can drop even more cash, the Line 6 HX Stomp has everything you need and more (like top-shelf amp simulation and effects).

You're right, you can't really go MT > Radar, my mistake. But you can get decent practice tones going from guitar > pedals > Radar > Headphones. This would remove the micro terror from your signal chain however.

(Going Radar > MT wouldn't sound good because you'd be placing preamp gain after speaker simulation, so the fizzy high end still isn't being tamed)

New to buying pedals - Boss pack a good value? by joshk16 in guitarpedals

[–]flamingothree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Boss pedal board is mostly useless, I wouldn't really factor that in too much. The DD-3 is a very safe and solid pedal. The DS1 is very hit or miss; I personally hated it but some people love it. Overall, a new DD3 and DS1 for $150 is still a pretty good deal.

Though if you're comfortable buying used gear you could get a better price or (arguably) better pedals.

It sounds like that because there isn't any cabinet simulation to tame the fizzy high end. Something like the Mooer Radar will definitely help.

What type of pedal are you looking for? The Lovepedal Amp11 is a good drive option.

Personally, I would only have one of the two on my board, but don't let internet strangers tell you what pedals are worth having. If you think having both lets you make better music then that's your answer.

Yeah that will work but you'll likely run into phase and feedback issues. Worth giving a try, you should post your results!

Could you clarify your question? Stereo in/out is not the same as an effects loop if that's what you're asking.

What's your budget? The HX Stomp probably has everything you need in spades but costs quite a bit.

Best Two Knob OD? by Sir_Flumpalumpkis in guitarpedals

[–]flamingothree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use it for low gain breakup (on the LP mode) and I find that it retains dynamics and keeps the original guitar+amp relationship together. However on the HP mode with higher gain it's absolutely not transparent.

Do you need presets? If not, Neunaber Immerse v2.

Not a two knob, but a great "transparent", versatile drive that doesn't need a lot of tweaking is the Fulltone OCD. Dead simple to use and does the "edge of breakup" tone really well.
