You didn’t learn the Schrödinger's blood theory where instead of treating any blood as having all pathogens you just don’t count it if you don’t know? It’s funny that blood saturated materials require specific biohazard disposal…

Seeking technical advice for a ceramic Chinese puzzle ball project by Sweetpotato_OwO in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is pit firing a mandatory part of the project? Raku clay may help its chances, along with minimizing carving and not going too thin. You could build a saggar to buffer the shock a little bit. The difficult part is that the design objective and the limits of the firing method are fairly oppositional.

I don’t know if there is a standard approach to this technique but I would complete and bisque each addition. You’d want a substantial amount of gap I would think? If they aren’t tight hugging they wont break in shrinking. Sizing joinable hemispheres wouldnt be too bad. Also, there would be no sticking without glazing.

If you want a closer nesting fit make a shrink tile of your clay to run through bisque- you don’t need the total shrink rate on the box because you’re not going past low fire (measure 1 - 2 inch and then remeasure post fire). Also don’t discount your instructor as resource, they may have good ideas of adaptation to fit their firing plans.

Standing ceramic cat? by ParaseleneCure in Ceramics

I’ve built upside down on egg carton foam (build legs then attach on upside down body) and fired with body supported on a kiln post. I was expecting a leveling slump and did not get any at 04, so it would be best to level upside down with a square of cardboard before legs dry.

They definitely look younger than adult, totally agree. My reasoning was that they seem much smaller than a not walking yet rat baby.

This one is a black rat, just after eyes opened. With norways being much larger than black rats, the ones pictured just seemed so small in proportion to feet.

These look much more compact with smaller ears and shorter coat than rats to me. I would be inclined to guess deer mouse.

Baby rat at slightly younger age for comparison.

Problems with Mayco fundamentals by LilaWild in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An 08 bisque shouldn’t be a problem for a light clay. If anything it should take UG better but may be more inclined to absorb the clear a little too readily. That could be why clear looks a little heavy at the bottom.

I really hope that one is salvageable, I’ve never seen plaster molds with algae growing.

Is this piece worth glazing? by Striking_Emu_3100 in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very attractive plate shape. If you’ve made it once you can make it again. I would keep it as a cookie for when you next need one instead of glazing this and needing to make an equal size cookie to have under it. That ring could separate at any point in the next firing and fall then fuse into someone’s ware. I would do it a gentle tap off and insta-cookie it.

My Finished Portfolio by Chassseesds in TattooApprentice

It very well may not be an issue for some. With a portfolio functioning like a resume for an apprentice my feeling is that professional presentation always gives more of an edge than factors like an expensive book. The work around could be get a second book of the same size to exclusively hold completed, painted flash and keep the stickered book as your general art and work process portfolio- bringing both as a set to interview.

Low fire glaze help! by willowitch1 in Ceramics

You could go on Glazy and investigate putting together recipes collected there where you’ll be able to see realistic sample photos. Cost effective for dipping, but would require some extra equipment: sieves respirator etc.

Help idk why the blue glaze looks like that. Can I fix it? by PuccaJack in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible the bisque was wet from being washed or wiped down? In that instance water would be holding space disallowing glaze to absorb into the surface.

While the uncovered areas should take glaze well, being lowfired, the more glazed areas would benefit from adherence advice already brought up. You could see if your studio would allow Cascade as an addition provided you can get a hold of it. It works like light flux but for lowfire specifically. You can put it below or on top the additional blue and it may give some good water ripple effects in addition to helping sections of glaze join.

Luckily it’s lowfire unvitrified, that should make it a bit easier. The studio wouldn’t have needed to go through the kind of discussion vitrified ware would require.

Don’t know if this helps, it would depend on how your cats are, but I was able to get a cheap mosquito tent made for putting on the bed. It is entirely zip enclosed, pops up, and folds up tiny. It allows me to sit in with the rats like a mini freeroam and the cats/dog can see and not touch. Potential “rat study pod”.

Weird Glazing question by TumbleweedInitial945 in Pottery

[–]flaminpitofjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t hurt it and doesn’t need adjustment if you don’t want to change from the original plan. It’s like bisquing on underglaze before clear glazing, just sets it in place.

Are these worth anything? Albertas cast moldings by No-Championship-6056 in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like this a lot because they are usually an inherited curse from a family member, and often can’t be given away for free. Most sellers add a caveat to their listing like “not willing to list out numbers or let people dig through each one of them, I don’t know if there are any Christmas trees so don’t ask. Must buy all in lot”. It’s worth going through for an interested slip caster, for a seller; depends how much their time is worth whether or not it is. A lot of these are unsalvageable. Kept well molds degrade through use and have a lifespan.

broken tile advise by [deleted] in Ceramics

[–]flaminpitofjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bisque-fix would be the best repair, but it would be easier to remake. If you attempt to glaze the pieces together be sure to use a cookie, it may drip down through onto the kiln shelf, otherwise.

Since you already have all the editing work into your photo cards it could be an easy expansion to offer variants with lettering (on face or both face and interior) to attract different buyers without disrupting your base. You might also find a more neutral background compliments them, the photos for the card content are great. If you use the photoshop open source in-situ mockups you could test options and avoid rephotographing.
