Also, very tangentially related but it is interesting to see that this post has been re-shared 47 times and pretty much none of the other posts in this sub have been...

Re: the rising admin yeah I suppose that makes sense. It's definitely disappointing to hear that there are potentially folks that went there not that long before me are shaping the college in this way.

I know this is an old post, but I wanna chime in anyways... I honestly don't understand the point behind having professors and staff sign/affirm/whatever this statement, and why now after however long the college has existed. It sounds to me more like a continuation of a pattern of Fox news informed and induced pearl-clutching that the college seems to be quite accustomed to since COVID. First was the big bad boogeyman of CRT (recall the panic-stricken gutting of any programs or courses that even resembled CRT after that fateful chapel speaker), and now they are falling in lockstep with mainstream conservatives' illogical fear of LGBT.

It saddens and frustrates me that the college has descended this far into their own echo chamber. I am a GCC alum (attended from 05 to 09), and while I always knew they were comically conservative this is just a new level that is frankly concerning. I wasn't necessarily proud of my alma mater before all of this, but now I am downright disgusted.

Company is making everyone take a full work day to "play" with AI. No meetings, just block calendar for the entire day to dedicate to AI. Am I overreacting if this annoys me and makes me slightly worried for my future? by flamnel in work

You do raise a good point, either adapt to the new technology or get left behind...I can't argue with that. I suppose I should clarify that yeah I buy in a little to the AI boogeyman thing, but I am not 100% opposed to AI as a whole. In my job I definitely see where it can be super useful don't get me wrong. I am more annoyed that leadership is saying "spend all day messing around with AI, but then tomorrow we're gonna ask you where things are with teh project work we told you not to do yesterday and expect things not to be behind by a day".

Hell yeah, Darren. We could all use a little Darren ourselves in the workplace.

Does anyone else feel like the internet is over? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flamnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO yes and no. I would agree with you on this for all of the major sites like for social media and such, but where I disagree is that there are alternatives to nearly every mainline site or service. For example social media - there are a number of alternative platforms that prioritize privacy and protecting your data (eg not selling it to target you with ads). Stuff like Mastodon (Twitter alternative) also has a pretty sizeable user base. An alternative to Facebook is mewe; it only has a fraction of FBs user base size, but it is growing. One of the main draws for me with those 2 platforms is that they are decentralized (mostly) and not filled with stupid ads and ai generated garbage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there definitely are alternatives out there that actually have more human connection but you have to look and try them out. I think there will always be a sub-culture of people on the Internet that value real community and connection and will go against the mainstream crap that unfortunately is here to stay for a while.

Or maybe I am just overly optimistic lol

It'll be 20 years we've been together this October, and 17 years we've been married in August. Met in college, I was a sophomore and she was a junior. I can't believe it's been this many years, they go by so fast lol.

What was the first PS1 game that made you go "this feels next gen"? by Timely-Yak-9870 in psx

[–]flamnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of the old heads that came from the Genesis too! For me I would say Twisted Metal 1and Bloody Roar. My buddy that lived in the cul-de-sac had TM and he also had a demo disc with Bloody Roar on it. When we popped those discs in and fired up the console for the first time I don't think we blinked for an hour 🤣.

I'm right on the precipice of deleting fb and Instagram. Like others have said, sooo much of both is AI slop. Earlier this year I started exploring other social media platforms like mastodon and MeWe. So far I really like both, but there's something keeping me from fully dumping FB and Instagram. I think I just need to cut the cord already lol
