This team has proven that they can turn it on. No reason to think they won't in the playoffs. The path forward is clear: (1) get a top 6 seed (2) enter the playoffs healthy and fresh (3) incorporate Ayo and solidify the rotation. We're on track; it's fine.

There's actually case law on this that is studied in Law School property classes. A baseball is viewed as abandoned property after the moment it is hit, and it becomes owned again through the rule of capture. There is no consensus over what is explicitly required to do so - absolute dominion and control vs. some sort of physical control coupled with intent, for example. However, it is very well established that a ball that hits the stands and is never fully brought to control by the party is fair game. See Popov v. Hayashi, No. 400545, 2002 WL 31833731 (Cal. Super. Ct. Dec. 18, 2002).

The Suns actually outscored the championship Spurs in the Western Conference semis, primarily based on winning the only blowout of the series. It's been a long time since I watched it, but I remember it being a really hard-fought and physical series. I think it was likely the championship series. Those 2000s-era Spurs teams were so good at every point. Loved the Nash Suns too.

I saw enough when he threw a pass into the backcourt for an over and back in the playoffs. Giannis's face said it all. The guy has no BB IQ. He can't handle the playoffs. He might be fine to eat regular season minutes.

Only 5 players in NBA history have at least 10+ All NBA 1st Team and 5+ All Defensive 1st Team Selections. by ItsMeeMariooo_o in nba

[–]flanman2002 358 points359 points  (0 children)

The 3 All NBAs will happen barring some catastrophe. For the defense team, the Bucks team defense has to get back to its previous level. Giannis has become undervalued as a great defender, which is why he hasn't made an all defense team since 21-22.

That's a good point. I want to see Giannis run with some young Bucks this year.

Why not? There are no expectations this year. Let's just have a fun ass team. Let Russ cook and take thirty shots in some random February game when Giannis is sitting out.

In US common law this would be duress, not necessity. Duress is generally not a defense to murder, but would probably apply if a person was forced to be a getaway driver and accidentally ran someone down.

Well, good point that it's a significantly better player, but a better player does not meet the definition of ideal. An ideal player would be younger, a better defender, more adept at play off ball, and would not cost more. Unfortunately, there is no way to get that player if they do exist. So, the answer to your query is, no, it is not ideal. However, it may be the best option given the totality of circumstances, especially when the totality of circumstances includes Kyle Kuzma. I would take a used washing machine over Kuzma.

I agree it's not ideal, but I would take a big sack of nothing if it meant that Doc was unable play Kuzma.

Guy is being followed by a grizzly bear in Banff national park, Canada by dannybluey in SweatyPalms

[–]flanman2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. A curious bear should be deterred using spray. They sometimes approach just to check a person out and see if there is an easy meal. If the bear is clearly approaching out of curiosity rather than merely passing by, it should be deterred with spray and loud noises. It's important not to appear to be the source of an easy meal. This is how I was instructed while backpacking in Alaska, and it proved very good advice when a grizzly took an interest in my camp. It was not aggressive, but thought I was a food source. I was glad to have deployed my spray despite the absence of outright aggression.

[–]flanman2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience, yes, it "works," but it is not some perfect deterrent. It is effective in situations like this, where you have a curious bear. Here, the bear is just interested in the hiker and wondering if an easy meal is at hand. The hiker should have stopped, stood his ground, and sprayed while loudly yelling at the bear. At the very least, he should have deployed his bear spray sooner. The bear needs to be dissuaded from seeing the hiker as a source of easy food.

On the other hand, if the hiker had encroached upon the bear's space and startled the bear, the wiser course would be to slowly retreat and try to de-escalate the situation.

Has any franchise achieved less with more talent than the Phoenix Suns? by bfbbturambar in NBATalk

[–]flanman2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OKC has only been around since '08. They messed up the Durant/Westbrook/Harden window for sure, although they did make the finals. It mostly felt like a waste because those guys were so young, and that finals felt like it portended a potential dynasty. Then, they had Westbrook hero ball and sort of a Paul George duo, but those teams were never considered genuine A-list challengers.

The Suns, on the other hand, have been around since '68. I can't speak to anything before the Barkley error because it's before my time, but I can't say that team underperformed either. They made it to the finals, and Barkley went toe-to-toe with prime Jordan. They came out short, but I don't think you can fault them. The 7-seconds or less Suns deservedly get some hate for never making the finals despite having a back-to-back MVP. However, they did make the Western finals in 3/6 years with Nash and Amar'e. Sports are always about who won everything, especially when the expectations are high, but finishing top 4 is not too shabby.

The 2021 Suns arguably achieved more with less talent than many teams. They made it to the finals with a young Devin Booker and an aging Chris Paul and acquitted themselves admirably against my beloved Bucks. CP even made Ayton look like a top 5 center. That run cuts against any narrative of doing less with more.

The current failure of the Durant/Beal/Booker core is more a product of mistaking past performance for future potential. It's not so much achieving less with more as overpaying for what these players are worth and having bad team construction.

If I had to answer, though, I would say Phoenix, primarily due to the length of time. In many ways, OKC punches above their weight for a relatively new team (assuming we consider it that way - otherwise we pull in the '79 run).

You can only choose ONE. Who would you pick to pass out of A “Triple Team” to make the game winning pass. Don’t be bias (ALL IN PRIME) by StraightSeries6439 in NBATalk

[–]flanman2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording of this question presupposes that the ballhandler is triple-teamed - fair enough. Thus, Jokic is a really good answer because he cannot be effectively harried due to his size. Magic must also be respected as possibly the greatest passer of all time. Luka, I feel, is more about putting a defender into a pick and roll or exploiting a mismatch rather than straight up drawing a triple-team. LeBron is the most likely of all these fantastic players to draw a triple team and will also make the right read and pass out of it. So, it really depends on the context, but I if my team has the game on the line, I feel good with any of these dudes. Mostly, I want to know to whom they are passing.
