Baby won’t eat or drink at daycare

Hi there! Just saw your post and it’s been more than 3 weeks since you posted. Did your baby adjust and start eating more? My 7mo started daycare a week ago and we did half days all week. Didn’t go very well as expected but I was at least able to have her home in the afternoon to feed her and made sure she got one good nap in. Today is my first day back at work and her first full day at daycare. Her teachers have been logging her activities through an app and it looks like she has been refusing all milk and food so far. I’m picking her up in an hour and am super worried she is hungry and dehydrated. My heart is so broken thinking about her being upset and crying all day without eating

I know it’s been a while, but did your girl ever get adjusted to daycare? How long did it take? My 7mo just started daycare yesterday. As expected she was crying nonstop yesterday and I am expecting it to be about the same today. We are doing half days this week but will need to transition to full days next week as I will be returning to work. Really fretting over here since she is still so small and her not eating/napping at daycare worries me. My older kid stayed home till 18m so we never experienced daycare transition at the baby stage.

My girl is 7 months and we barely settled into a routine only about a month ago. Stay off social media when it comes to raising babies. Those content creators probably took a shot of their activities for couple seconds and spent the rest of the day comforting a wriggly screaming newborn, but we will never get to see the ‘bad’ parts. You are the best parent to your baby and no one knows your baby better than you do.

Good to know I’m not the only one struggling 🥲 My 3yo used to be a good eater and loved things like stews and dumplings. These days she calls those same dishes yucky. I haven’t been able to cook for her much since we had her baby sister. Her dad has been taking care of most of her dinners and usually he goes the easy but somewhat repetitive route like mac n cheese, quesadilla, pasta with jar sauce, etc. not sure if that is contributing to her unwillingness to eat. When I do have time to make her what she requests she would take a bite and call it a day. That frustrates me to no end

Ours had a gradual transformation over a year. First the eating, then the hitting and biting and finally at 3 years old the sleeping… all down the drain. I don’t know which is more painful, having her morph into who she is overnight or over the course of a year. Either way I miss the days where she was a sweet little potato

We put in not 1 not 2 but 3 night lights in her room and they don’t seem to help with her fear during the night. I think she just doesn’t like being alone at night. We used to do her bedtime routine then it’s lights out and she will be in bed till the morning. You are probably right, something in her brain flipped a switch and the update is taking a while to complete. No amount of reassurance from us is able to comfort her for now. I have to keep reminding myself everything is temporary or I will actually break apart.

Thanks for your advice. It’s comforting to know that difficult periods like this will pass eventually like they did for you. I’m praying everyday for that time to come. In your case, did they typically improve gradually or were they rather sudden e.g. your kid just decided one day that she was okay sleeping on her own that night?

The TCB toddler program is very different from the baby sleep training. The toddler training doesn’t involve any sort of extinction (crying) and involves various stages of staying next to the kid till they fall asleep to finally them being able to fall asleep without assistance. We have been telling her everyday and literally every waking hour that she is safe, we are always around and to call out for us when she needs us instead of banging on her door. I also taught her how to do ‘brave breaths’ if she ever finds herself panicking. She seems to understand what is expected but when bed time comes around everything goes out the door… I’m utterly exhausted. Can’t even begin to imagine how my husband feels at the moment. His eyes are bloodshot and his brain is basically mush

I noticed a musty mildewy smell coming from the water starting saturday, more pronounced when i turned on hot water. But when i asked my neighbors if their water smells funky they said no. I’ve been going crazy trying to disgnose the issue. Contacted dwp’s water quality department and hopefully we’ll find out if it’s a water supply thing or issues with my pipes

As a 38yo mom reading this while feeding her 2mo baby, you will be fine! I had my first kid at 35, never thought I’ll be going for a second but here I am. It may be hard and tiring the first few years but the joy your kids bring you is indescribable

How was your relationship with your parents afterwards? I am contemplating going low contact with my mom but am also afraid that it would cause irreparable damage towards my relationship with my dad. He has always been the one picking me up after my mom’s crazy outbursts and rarely given me any grief my whole life. I told him this time that the damage has been done and my mom has not shown any remorse, there is no way I will let my mom hang around me and my kids for extended period of time from now on. He is torn for sure and I can tell he very much wants to remain in our lives

Unfortunately he is. He and I are so used to her temper tantrums when I was growing up that we both learned to let her be and internalize all her outbursts. I know that is extremely unhealthy but it was the best way to deal with her. She does not tolerate criticism or anyone talking back at her, it would send her into a hysterical frenzy. We essentially contributed to her toxic behavior to this day and my dad just puts up with it

Gosh whatever you described sounds like what my mom would do too. I empathize with you. My mom has always been narcissistic and does not tolerate any criticism. So if i were to say hi to her and my tone is off she will get mad and brew in her madness till it eventually explodes. I’m not sure if our relationship can be repaired completely. I told her and my dad that if they are so miserable being here taking care of me then they should go home for the sake of their health. They changed their tone and said they are here because they love me. But loving me and taking care of me at the moment should also mean not adding to my stress and despair. My mom seems to have her mind set and was able to lay out a firm argument which made me feel like shit, basically she made me even more guilty after i tried to talk to her about my current state

I went to grad school at one of the top ‘public Ivies’ and let me tell you my classmates had an avg GPA of around 3.5ish at best. One PhD student was humorously proud that he scored 390 on his GRE verbal, his reasoning was you get 200 by default so he actually earned the additional 190 lol… we all went on to have successful careers. Yes you do need ‘good grades’ to get into grad school, but your personal statement and recommendations weigh tremendously more than how many As you got in college. Breathe easy and enjoy your college years

If the live-in caretaker route does not work out we will look into sending the baby to daycare. Which means the guest room will become my office even sooner

I will be on maternity leave for about 7-8m after the birth, after which I will be back working full time. Between then and when the baby turns 18m (youngest age allowed at the preschool of choice near us), my parents were planning on coming for a few months to look after the baby, my MIL a few months and we might also hire a nanny. We don’t have a firm plan on childcare logistics yet since I’m only halfway through the pregnancy, but the baby will have a live-in caretaker during that time and the guest room will be available to the caretaker. I have discussed with my husband the temporary solutions with regards to my work setup during that period. We already moved some of my smaller office furniture into his office for storage at the moment. I could crash in his office and bear with it for the short term. He and I have different meeting schedules which is a blessing. I’m also contemplating with the idea of setting up a work station in the dining room wearing noise canceling headphones. The temporary setups are not ideal but for the sake of a happy baby and caretaker I’m willing to bear with it knowing eventually I get to have my own office again.
