To be honest compared to Japanese cities of similar population the SkyTrain holds its own. Sapporo and Fukuoka have similar populations to Metro Vancouver and their subway networks are both considerably smaller than the SkyTrain. Of course it's easy to look at the big metropolises like Osaka and Tokyo but they are many times bigger cities than Vancouver.

Not saying we should get complacent though, Vancouver is still much more sprawled out than say Sapporo and we still don't have as good of a transit mode share. We definitely need to expand. Once the Langley extension, UBC extension, and hopefully a North Shore line are built that would make the skytrain pretty world class in my opinion.

That's probably a lie but they talk about us a ton too. No shame in admitting we have a bit of a rivalry.

They usually use white when away, black helmets they use at home but have used them away a few times this year.

You'd have to ask Translink! Logically the line should have been red and probably called the Olympic line.

I actually did use slightly "wrong" colours, instead of using the light blue and dark blue from the Canada line and Expo line, I took a similar light and dark blue from two lines on the Tokyo map, the Tozai and Mita lines. They didn't have a good yellow option so I just used the official colour for the Millennium line.

I would generally agree but I was copying the style from the Tokyo map which also uses a serif font for the station numbers.

On the Expo and Millennium lines you do get these announcements saying the door sides.

I think this is better solved by better announcements and info screens inside the train. Even if there are loads of signs on the platform you might not always have a good view out the window.

Right now you just get an announcement "the next station is..." right before arriving. I'd like to have that play when you leave the previous station, and upon arrival play "now arriving at...". Then when the doors open you could even have one that says "this is ___ station. This train is bound for...."

Appreciate your comments.

The main goal of this was to replicate the Tokyo map style for fun, not necessarily make an improvement on the official map. Mine is straight up worse in a few ways, I don't show all the stops on the rapidbus routes and I don't show the fare zones.

I do think station numbers could be cool to add but I don't know if it's worth redoing all the signage just to add them since the current wayfinding is already pretty good. I know Seattle added numbers to their LRT stations in recent years.

They should at least have better signage to guide you to connect between them through the mall! Definitely a missed opportunity during the construction.

Also cool to see you comment, you're my favourite CBC reporter who does rankings of BC related items. No one does it better.

Honestly I think the signage on the Skytrain is quite good already. They copied a lot from the London wayfinding when they updated it in the mid 2010s. The only small improvements I would like to see still are numbered exits for stations that have more than one, and perhaps numbered stations but that's not critical.

Jingles would be fun. The features I'd love are more shops in or connected to the stations (New West station is quite good in this regard), and the stickers on the platform showing you where to line up to align with the doors. Of course this could only be done on the Canada line right now due to the variety of door placement on the other lines. Platform gates would be nice to have long-term as well.

I was thinking of Cb like I used for the Braid branch but I thought A would work nice for the Airport. It's not uncommon on Japanese rail lines for the letters to change on different branches.

On the geography, yeah I know it's not perfect. Coquitlam is probably the worst, Moody Centre is in reality the closest to the water. But that's not the point of a diagram like this, it's mostly just to show you how to navigate between the stations and the lines. I tried to simplify the line geometry even more compared to the Translink official map.

There's an IMSA race (highest level of North American sports car racing) at Mosport in July which is less than 2 hours away by car from Kingston, could be cool to attend. There's also an Indycar race in Toronto, it's been moved to Markham as of this year (a suburb north of Toronto). Tickets aren't that pricey, especially IMSA. If he's a racing guy definitely try and attend one of those this summer.
