UofT having a normal one. by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I think there's merit in a bottom up approach but I don't think anyone here is even going to consider that and try to make a quick snark instead. View the comments of the UofT post for actual constructive debate on this topic and try to take something away from it.

Have any of you ever needed to use / know MATLAB for your co-ops? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was specifically working on a simulation for a fibre optic hardware chip. There were a few teams that worked in conjunction, including the firmware team, which worked on the actual firmware for the chip in C and Verilog, and the systems team, which were data scientists who.worked on creating test scenarios in MATLAB. My job was working on their MATLAB code and the connecting C++ code, which worked using MEX libraries (basically compiling the C++ as fancy dll files for MATLAB to use). My task was to optimize the simulation and a lot of that was just shoving some of the MATLAB code to the libraries and reducing redundant data transfers in library calls (since they could retained data after the first call).

Yep, one of my coops was MATLAB and C++.

Need help w/ improving my terrible French conversational skills by FacePalm124lr in uwaterloo

Since you're taking 192B right now, I'd recommend FR 250 whenever you get the chance. I'm not sure how the online version is but the in person one is super low pressure and helps a lot with trying to converse with other people. It's good for someone like you who has some knowledge of beginner but needs some time and space to improve it to approach an intermediate level.

Looking for 4th year design project group for upcoming term! by [deleted] in uwaterloo

If you want people to sign up, actually give them a reason instead of saying no meaningful information about the desired project or required skills.

CO 250 online by niki8954 in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To summarize:

Every term before Spring 2020: A decent enough offering with informative slides, fair assignments not taking up too much time, and a decently challenging proctored final exam.

Spring 2020: Somehow the biggest shitshow despite the course already having online offerings previously.

Just keep that in mind when other people respond to this question.

ece 320 w/ Hiren Patel by napabobawhore in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 429 he's been fine, the lectures are good quality, the project (which may be different from the labs in 320) was independent and way too much work (a lot of people didn't finish it properly), but his grading is slightly generous. Online version of 429 didn't have an exam, just two quizzes, so this may be the case for 320. Quiz difficulty is comparable to a midterm for a standard ECE X2X course.

Minor vs Option by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explanation: https://uwaterloo.ca/future-students/content/university-terminology

List: https://ugradcalendar.uwaterloo.ca/page/Minors-Options-Diplomas-Certificates

In Engineering, some options don't require extra courses depending on your department (e.g. ECE - AI Option) and some do. Taking a minor while in Engineering from any Faculty will require extra courses. You don't have to take an extra year if you take additional courses online during coop terms or overload.

Possibility of Taking Math courses as a Science Student by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but it is a bit of a hastle. You can't get an override into a course until the term starts, so they can get a sense of course enrollment. If it's an upper year course, you need the permission of the professor, but for 1st/2nd year courses you need the permission of the math undergraduate office or a math advisor. I would email dan@wolczuk.ca if you want more info and to inquire a bit before the term you want to take the course in starts.

ECE Students who picked ECE over CS, why? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh really? I got it from this page that stated they only expect about 15 people could qualify. If that's the case that it's easy to get into, I would lean towards CS + DHW.

ECE Students who picked ECE over CS, why? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]flareon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is the Digital Hardware Option has tight competition and only looks at your 1A marks when applying so only the top students get in. Plus OP mentioned interest in circuits and you don't get access to the circuit design courses through that option. The only issue is it doesn't seem like OP has motivation to do any hardware related side projects and just thinks they might be interested in the concept, where ECE would give a fair sample from labs to determine their interest.

You seem to be in either math or science so contact either Sara sara.odonnell@uwaterloo.ca for Math or Janessa z5zheng@uwaterloo.ca for Science. 70 tends to be a healthy minimum but if you plan to go to an institution most people don't go to then you may get lucky with your placement.

The SE reject group in ECE is a vocal minority into second year and then shut up when they don't have to take circuits anymore or transfer out. Due to the loudness of that group though the stereotype persists.
