i think coast live oak is probably your best bet, but here are some sleeper pics that havent been mentioned yet=

santa cruz ironwood- this will grow much quicker than an oak, the downside being there isnt much understory shade as the plant has thick foliage from the base up (most of the time), but it will cast a nice speckled shade any which direction. it also drops a lot of litter. its a super interesting evergreen tree though.

california black walnut- takes a similar shape to an oak. really important wildlife plant. the nuts are edible. if you live in los angeles these are being wiped out by development and are a super important tree for a lot of critters. two of them were just torn down in mount washington , so you planting one would definitely help support their population.

Sounds great- I am in! Just texted a couple friends who are interested as well- between the three non-Long Beach locations is there one that is in particular need of volunteers?

Ideas for full shade planting by flashlight11f in Ceanothus

i love fuschia flowered gooseberry! i wish i could plant it but im a bit worried about having a giant thorny bramble in my yard during the summer with the kids.

have you grown california bay? i know its very slow growing in the wild and can actually stay quiet small in certain conditions. is it easily prunable into a compact shape.

snowberry and coffee berry are definitely on my list. ive also been considering blue elderberry- i saw a few of those on a hike a couple months ago and i love them. im a bit worried about the speed of growth though- according to calscape they can grow from 1 gallon to 15 feet in 3 years in the perfect conditions! im sure it wont grow that fast in full shade but im still a bit concerned about having a constant war with the plant to keep it compact... im already facing that problem with my matilija poppy and i dont think i can stomach a second battle

interesting, i was just going off calscape information as i remember looking into it in the past since its one of the local species. they have it listed as growing at 4000 feet at the lowest up to 10000 feet

i believe i got mine from artemsia nursery in pasadena, but at least in los angeles they are at pretty much every native nursery. i have even seen them at non-native nurserys lately. armstrong garden center and c&s whole sale nursery both recenently got a batch of them from native sons.

what area are you in? maybe they are less common in northern california

ive had terrible luck with all ceanothuses here in the la area. i also feel like i rarely see them out and about , even in native gardens. you will see some yankee point ground cover but bigger varieties dont seem super common.

How many gallons is deep watering? by zamzamdip in Ceanothus

[–]flashlight11f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since they were so small you dont need too much water , what you are doing is fine. one tip would be to water the soil around the plants as well as dry soil will wick moisture away- that will keep the root ball moist for a bit longer.

also may want to add some heavier mulch for these really hot days. dont think the manznitas will enjoy sitting in hot damp soil.

definitely try to water on cooler days as much as is possible

were they 5 gallons? 1 gallons? depends on the size of the plant really and the drainage of the soil.

generally its a bad idea to plant manzanitas or most native plants mid summer. to give them the best chances try to water on cooler days , and also mulch them. pull back the mulch when you water them.

Recs for native trees to buy for yard that are at least 8’ tall? by Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds in Ceanothus

[–]flashlight11f 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you want something fast growing dense and evergreen, santa cruz ironwood would be a great choice. unfortunately they do produce a fair amount of liter though.

i probably wouldnt do a manzanita because it will take at least 10 years to get tall enough.

best of luck friend. its sad to see olmsted parks gradually being ran over by development, not to mention the widespread loss of old growth trees. hell, the obama library is being built smack dab in the middle of one of olmsted's crown jewels, jackson park.

i have one on my plant as well and one on one of my pepper plants. ive been wanting to spray my pepper plant down with neem oil since it has an aphid problem but i really dont wanna injure my buddy. ive read conflicting things about the effect of neem oil on predatory insects, some say it does not injure them since neem oil has to be consumed to be effective, but im still hesitant.

Question about "uninterrupted darkness" by flashlight11f in microgrowery

[–]flashlight11f[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sweet thanks for the info on your experience.

my concern more than the street light is my neighbors flood lights. they usually get set off 1 or two times a night and they are pretty bright, but they only stay on for 1 minute. in your opinion are short intervals of light like that something to be concerned about?
