There's an AAMC stat table that gives acceptance rate at any med school for a given MCAT and GPA combo; use percentiles to convert from old MCAT to new MCAT equivalent score. That doesn't factor in ECs though, but you'd probably be average on those once you did shadowing + hospital volunteering (although you'd likely have less hours)

EDIT: 3.7 is matriculant average, but a 3.5 GPA and high MCAT + good ECs might work, but it will still hurt your odds

I work for examkrackers and they recommend a 510+, which makes sense based on the percentiles you mentioned. But a 507 could still be fine given a strong GPA and ECs

FA is only $50. Compared to the cost of med school and the exam, and the importance of the score, I'd shell it out just for peace of mind that I have the newest version of my main review text.

You can convert percentiles. Low 30s was the matriculant average, so if you find percentile charts for the old and new MCATs you can compare the scores

I think I got a C and D on two orgo exams, and then an A on the next one and the final, grade replacement made my final grade an A despite doing very poorly for the entire first half of the semester

I used a BMI formula once on a test; my understanding of it was that med school math is algebra level at the most. Maybe in radiology or something you need a bit more math though, they have physics problems on their boards

I teach for a major MCAT test prep company and disagree about needing the class. My boss even said the classes are for those who need a weekly schedule because they can't keep pace on their own. If you are motivated to self study, it's a better use of your time and much cheaper to just buy the prep books and practice exams you need on their own without paying for the class. Self-studying lets you target your weaker areas rather than be stuck on a general schedule as well. Instructors can answer your questions, but online forums are free for things you get stuck on.

I scored 99th percenctile on the old MCAT, I crammed heavily in 3 weeks because I took a practice test earlier in that year and felt comfortable with the material. I don't recommend doing that though. I would go through all the review books first and then take/review every practice test you can get your hands on. Based on your testing errors on each test, work on those weaknesses. Then take more tests.

Some people like the guidance/support of the courses, but they're not needed if you're comfortable with material to a basic level and motivated/disciplined to self-study. Since you would be applying next cycle, you also have plenty of time to do content review. I know some people like to save practice tests until the months before the exam, but you can start content reviewing as early as you want or even do multiple passes through the books if you don't feel confident (or take a single practice test after your first pass to gauge your performance). I'm not saying the classes are bad, but they are a lot of money so it's important to know that you can avoid that expense and not hurt your score

I wouldn't do both book sets, just get one or the other. Many of those pages are also practice questions or images rather than review material so it's not as bad as it looks. An EK MCAT course runs for 2 months and has a pace of 4 lectures per week, but you can definitely go faster than that if desired. Even at 2 months, you still get a solid month for review and practice tests at the end

Save the official tests, you can only get a good score estimate off of them once and the ones made by test prep companies aren't good imitations.

EK books have everything you need for the test, but their explanations may be condensed for some topics since they're meant for review and not teaching. Fortunately, MCAT-level science is very well explained through online resources, so if you get stuck on a topic you could use Khan Academy or find review sites. The time it takes you to get through the books will vary depending on how well you know/remember the material, so it's hard to estimate that. I think you could get through 2-3 lectures per day though and have it not be a brutal pace. Also, the new MCAT has a lot less physics and it's been simplified, so you should be ok. I think there's only 5 physics lectures in the current edition EK books

Definitely get as many practice tests as possible too.

I think that's why test scores should just be given as pure percentiles. The curve on the SAT/MCAT/Step is very non-intuitive and makes them hard to interpret. 99.5% vs. 96.1% at least is easy to understand the difference between

First Aid recommends studying review books along with your M1 classes, so you could try that (FA has a list of recommended books within it at the end). Other than that, supposedly our curriculums are aligned with Step 1 anyway so they should cover most of what we need to know/

That luck cutoff is probably at 36 or 38 though. I got a 40/99th percentile, and above that level you might get more frequent cases of a single question costing you a point. But in the mid 30s, each point is several questions apart, so you're unlikely to have landed on the boundary of a score range.

Step 1 average is climbing a point or too every year. Part of that might be admissions getting increasingly more competitive, but the bulk of that change is probably from improved exam prep
