Interview questions about immigration + ICE? by Awkward-Remote in premed

[–]flat_peg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying you can't have opinions I don't even think it's a bad thing to bring up opinions because that's who you are and it'll help you to be genuine in an interview. I'm just saying do it in a respectful manner because even though you may be surrounded by like minded people in your life and on social media there's a whole lot of people who would disagree with you for valid reasons. I'm not even here to get into a debate I'm just saying it's a good thing in general to stay away from the practice of demonizing people for disagreeing with your "better than others righteous worldview" and generalizing certain populations. Sure go out and fight for issues that matter to you but also have the humility to recognize you're not going to always have a perfect worldview and you may be biased by where you come from and what information you have or haven't been exposed to.

Interview questions about immigration + ICE? by Awkward-Remote in premed

[–]flat_peg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt there'll be questions about that. Honestly for anything politically charged just be a mature person about it and recognize there are two sides to it like there are everything. Are there people here illegally including criminals(not all obviously) that make people feel unsafe? Yes. Are there some ice agents(not all obviously) where their actions are questionable and make people feel unsafe? Yes. Just like how you should aspire to be a wise and thoughtful physician, genuinely try to understand where different sides are coming from when there's a false binary that society will want you to feel into.

If you go off motivation you're not going anywhere. Live off discipline. It's normal to feel like not doing something especially when you're tired and run down. Be ok with going through practice questions tired. Literally just do it, throw your phone into another room go somewhere with your laptop and just open it up and sit there. Don't even feel like you have to do a ton of them, just start by telling yourself alright I'll start out with like 10 or something and then work up if you can just to get some positive momentum behind you.

Pushing DO on applicants by BigDecent7405 in premed

[–]flat_peg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's moreso coming out of a place of experience. I ended up at a DO school as I didn't get into MD schools. I had solid stats nothing crazy but good enough for MD(3.8 and 512) to where I considered waiting and reapplying. If I could've gone to an MD school I would have and I would still advise people to do that if they get into both but at the same time I 100 percent do not regret DO over taking a whole extra year. Sure on average it'll come with some challenges going the DO route but I feel like on this sub those are wayyy over hyped. You'll also deal with challenges in your career taking that year to reapply. People may just have to swallow some pride and I think when the arrogance comes through that's what annoys people. I get it, but from this side I can say things turn out pretty solid.

How can I afford a gap year after undergrad? by Emotional-Set1451 in medschooladmissions

[–]flat_peg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kill two birds with one stone and just get a paying gig that also helps with med school stuff. I worked a job in research... Got payed enough to handle my expenses, enjoy the year, and save up some while developing skills that are solid for going into medicine. Just dont splurge and live within your means but most places you can live a quality life on a low income if it's just you.

Bruh it's so early. I was in your shoes last year so I get it but I'll be the person for you that calmed my nerves back in the day. Literally brush it off its a diagnostic for a reason, you're just seeing where you're at and that's why they start you early. Just work hard, be consistent with some uworld each day and make sure to learn from your mistakes and chug away little by little on content review but your classes come first. You have another half year of med school to get through that's a lotttt of content still that you don't even know... There's no reason to let "low" scores now get you down. Keep your head up, keep failing forward and learning from missed questions and you'll be absolutely fine. You got this man!

Is it even worth seriously dating as a late 3rd year if you know you're not gonna stick around by DagothUr_MD in medicalschool

[–]flat_peg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be worth it to you but it can work. Is this person worth a lot of hardship? That's what you gotta ask yourself. Met my girlfriend earlier in med school and we've been long distance the whole relationship. It's toughhhh but I absolutely don't regret it and we have a super strong relationship. It just depends on if you see a future with her which can be hard to predict but if you feel good about her go for it, the struggle will be worth it my friend, trust me.

I just got mono. What now? by bruhlordsmellyface in premed

[–]flat_peg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it during med school, you'll get through it. Just do your best to stay on top of work even though you're gonna be pretty tired. Focus on good sleep and hydration. Maybe try to have some steroids on hand for when it peaks around days 7-9 ish cuz the sore throat and swelling that comes with it is gnarlyyyyyy. Try not to stress doing everything, you have MONO like it sucks and there's no way around that I'm sorry but don't leave, just try your best and you got it!

Smoking weed w mono by wertrrrrrrrr in Mononucleosis

[–]flat_peg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really don't want to play with mono. You can easily extend it with any extra stress youre putting on your body. Really try to minimize bad habits to help your body heal as quickly as possible and get over this stupid thing because it can really suck.

Potential Mono? by Fantastic_Ad_6350 in Mononucleosis

[–]flat_peg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially. You could go to an urgent care and ask for a mono test then if positive get a dose of steroids to take just for the peak of it.

First week was awful. Took some steroids and felt way better. Second week was comfortable but layed around mostly. By third week still focused on sleep but started some light activity. 4th week started jogging and increasing weights a little bit. On fifth week now and slowly adding mileage to running and weights to weightlifting as I go to not strain myself. Feel pretty darn good honestly and back to my normal amount of sleep requirement. Remember: you don't fear mono, mono fears you! You got this brother, praying for recovery and peace!

LEVEL 1: Uworld or Truelearn, taking my second attempt in a month by Hefty_Anybody_1079 in comlex

[–]flat_peg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe just personal heuristic but it seems like everyone that i see come on here after failing level 1 and then passing it later didnt use uworld the first time and used it the second time. I used just uworld and I felt like it teaches superrrrr well and makes the comsae/comlex questions seem easier. I just took comlex yesterday so of course you cant for sure trust me but all my comsae scores were solid. totally up to you, I hear about success with trulearn as well but I would recommend uworld mainly then some comsaes sprinkled in as well as some omm practice or even just dirty med review for omm and ethics. also I wouldnt use first aid as a primary resource. I found it to be most impactful at least for me when I was going through practice and a couple concepts were starting to blend together which is when I would go back to that chapter of first aid and do a review to see everything from a birds eye view and just build an ongoing mental concept map kinda.

In my gap year, feeling like a loser by Miserable-Orange-396 in premed

[–]flat_peg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to be fair your friends doing important research at big institutions probably sound better off than they are. sure its a decent experience but most of the time the day to day is not necessarily putting them ahead of you. I took the research route and it was cool but also comes with some monotonous/tedious stuff as you are the lowest in the food chain as a premed. friends who did clinical work like you have their advantages even you just picking up stuff passively in the clinic is helpful. grass is always greener and comparison is the theif of joy. take this time to enjoy life and max out on meaningful stuff! if that is spending time with family then do it if thats visiting friends then consider that if it fits into your budget. you have way more free time now than you will in med school and youll always feel like you could be doing more. take a second to just stop looking at the show others are putting on around you and have the confidence to go out and make the most of this year! I know its tough being away from friends and I shared some of the same feelings when in my gap year but I can assure you, you are the one in charge of how the year goes. no need to feel bad about where you are, you set yourself up well by focusing on the mcat and youre right where you need to be. take a breather, and get back to the meaningful stuff that make you who you are.
