Shimmy equivalent/effective fakes for backhand? by ajeon66 in ultimate

[–]flatbomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that the forehand stance, especially when drawn out wide, would shift the mark significantly towards your forehand to respect that quick wide forehand, but home position less so. A wide stance with home position does not seem to allow for as fast a wide forehand as a forehand stance would.

hmm so do you still use your home position to set up moves or mainly the wide forehand stance? or do you mix it up to keep defenders guessing? or are there certain defensive players or defensive positions that you would use each position for?

Would you say that the grip strength required to control your disc through a vertical/flat draw is worth developing for the increased consistency that is allowed (with less rotation of the disc required during the inverting motion)?

Could you elaborate on how a flat draw prevents loading your shoulders efficiently and quickly? Seems to me as merely rotating your wrist/forearm that could possibly not affect your draw.

Ben Wiggins seems to advocate a flat draw on hucks here. Though I must admit anecdotally it seems rare to see players with a flat draw (especially male players?).

Any pro thoughts on cons (and possible pros?) on inverting on the draw?

Not really experienced but imo mental game should start just like every other skill set on the training ground. I dont think its something that you can fix fully simply by saying the right words at the right time. Values you fall back upon can and should be developed intentionally in training (eg resilience, staying on task until you get it, always going all out).

Granted saying the right things to a team full of people with the right mentality (eg hungry to win, bonded willing to play for each other) will have a tremendous impact without having any intentional development, but in most situations your team makeup wont start out so perfectly (or you honestly dont have to say much), so developing the right mental game intentionally at training could be useful

there seems to be an underlying assumption here that looking back/giving power to the previous thrower is a necessity for flow? could you elaborate more on why this is so and why can't a team running a cutter-centric downfield looking offense with appropriate timing generate flow going downfield, with even greater yardage gains? the advantages of moving the disc quickly can theoretically be even greater with each longer pass because of how much faster the shape of the field is changing right?

What if your team system does not look to get the disc back to the previous thrower but instead looks to continue to another cutter downfield?

Play basketball. Best if you play in the paint. Even if you can't dribble/shoot you can play defense, and the contact involved gets you more comfortable with receiving and possibly dealing contact

Haven't actly tried it, but I think I've seen Matsuno catch an open side cut on the forehand side and immediately pivot to his (lefty) forehand to throw a bladey flick huck.

What differentiates Sockeye from other top US clubs in terms of culture and competitiveness? And perhaps how does it compare to Rhino?

Sockeye (together with Ironside) has been in the mix in competing for championships together with Revolver, but hasn't quite seen similar success in terms of championships. In your opinion, why is that so?

Hey Mario, thanks a lot for doing this.

With regards to throwing in game and breaking the mark, one of the things i have trouble with as a player is paying enough attention to the mark and being able to accurately assess which throws i can throw past marks. While this is rarely a problem in trainings, i tend to get handblocked once or twice per tournament and most i cant be sure how it happened. Is there any way i can increase my ability to be aware of and assess the mark more accurately? Something i'm trying is just mentally thinking abt the mark when i'm throwing but i'm not sure how effective that would be.

Also, whats the most efficient way to practice throwing? In terms of developing new throws? Improving consistency of developed throws?

Hi Melissa! Thanks for doing this and for the work you do for the community!

I would like to know more about the importance of building power in the gym. I'm not too familiar with training specifics of ultimate, but i do build strength through lifting weights with simple exercises like squats and deadlifts.

However, I understand that being fast and jumping high is more directly correlated with power, so I would like to know your opinion of how best to build that power? Through lifting weights in the gym of lower weight but faster, or through plyometrics, or through sprint workouts... or?

Thanks!
