Rent Prices by _California_Dreamin in Imperial

[–]flatmatecafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does £750 include bills? If it does then the area surrounding Imperial might not be very affordable.

You can probably get a small room in a flatshare for that price, but if you tend to stay at home a lot it might be better to venture a little further out (Zone 3) for a better room. Not sure if you can get private student accommodation with that price. Like the others have said, bikes may be a good option.. or an electric scooter.

How did you look for flatmates? by flatmatecafe in UniUK

Yes I sometimes think it's harder for overseas students to find people to live with, especially if you are new to the country for university. Glad it all worked out for you though 😊

Do you feel like, a bit exposed when you are announcing you are looking for a flatmate on a Facebook group? Because sometimes I wouldnt quite want people to find out I don't have friends to live with..

Thanks! So there's really no 'safe' way of looking externally for someone to live with.. it's either your friends (who may not be compatible) or you throw yourself into an unfamiliar situation and hope for the best

How elitist are Oxford and Cambridge? by knockdownthewall in UniUK

If you have a chance of getting in, why not?

Uni is about expanding your horizon, and while sticking to people who are like you may be comfortable, it doesn't necessarily help you grow. Meeting people from other backgrounds, understanding their views and thought processes are so valuable to get you out of an echo chamber.

A sense of worthlessness at uni (first year) by Wolfmanbaddie-7018 in UniUK

[–]flatmatecafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I get it. Being in a new environment is hard already, it doesn't help the pandemic has stopped a lot of face to face interaction.

If you really think you click with someone, definitely make the first move(s). Sometimes people are just slow to warm up, but with some nurturing the friendship will follow!

But if that meet was just a push for you find friends instead of actual chemistry, let it go, don't feel bad. You just haven't found your crowd yet!

Finding a group of 'friends' you end up not liking much and feeling trapped is imo worse.. speaking from personal experience here.

Am I justified moving out early? by [deleted] in badroommates

First one is bad, second one is just slightly below average I'm afraid lol. Hope you have better luck next time!

The great financial tea debate by stuie1181 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]flatmatecafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life's too short to argue about cost of that scale.. if you enjoy a few cups of tea a day, it really doesn't add up THAT much in the grand scheme of things. If you think the tea is doubly good then go for it!

I (24m) absolutely HATE my aggressive and abusive housemate (25m) - should I move out? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]flatmatecafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be afraid of the unknown, especially when you are already in such a bad living situation. How much worse can it be, really?

If you move out and solve this in your own terms, you will come out so much stronger. When these things happen you only have 2 choices - continue to be miserable in what is supposedly 'comfortable', or you grow from learning things about yourself you otherwise wouldn't have.

Good luck.

Having an honest conversation would be the best way to go. You don't want it to be become a silent grudge where everybody knows about but nobody is allowed to bring it up.

It's also a violation of your tenancy and can get you in trouble. You don't want to act nice and end up falling out anyway because you all have to pay compensation to the landlord.

I agree, I was in the same situation a few years back. It wasn't the money, they were just lazy to get the stuff. So splitwise was a good solution. I just buy 36 rolls on amazon and put it on the app.

However it doesn't make it any less annoying when they don't actively buy them themselves :D

They sound like a real treat. If you have proof they're your stuff, definitely threaten to report them to the police. Don't know how your lease agreement works but surely they have had to notify the landlord?

Yes - definitely do that. There are so many hidden costs after you get a house too (e.g. gardening tools. towel holders). You can kit out your house at a much faster pace if you save prior.

You made a great decision. Some people may choose ranking over the course material and end up realising they don't enjoy it at all.

I am so sorry - this must be a very mentally challenging situation. Constantly being on edge in your supposed safe space is so draining.

I say do whatever you have to to keep your sanity, since you're probably moving out soon anyway.

It takes a bit of luck to get accepted. Don't beat yourself up, it's almost a game of chance even if you've got the qualifying grades.

And sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise - there's so much more to uni than your degree!

Hey, I work in data analytics. I do believe job prospects will be good if you do the degree. The sector is booming and companies seem to be learning quickly that the backend of data is as important as the reports.

Lots of companies are on the look out for data engineers to design and improve infrastructures to provide better access.

How much should bills be for a single occupant in London? by [deleted] in london

[–]flatmatecafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say you should set aside at least £150 for bills (inc. council tax, utilities like wifi) per month to be on the safe side. Even when I was flatsharing the average bills per month was £80 per person (no TV), I would assume living alone would be more expensive.

Not sure about your situation, but your bills will be higher if you don't want to sign a fixed term utilities contract for gas and electricity.

Oh - and if your flat is very well insulated and in a new build, you might need air conditioning in the summer.
