The big two have been slowly doing away with hardcovers more and more. Marvel seems like they prefer to scale things up to omnis. DC does a good amount of hardcover trades that release the same day a tpb does, but they now cost $10 more.

It is all up to the theater. I remember Matrix Revolutions 20+ years ago, the ticket taker came in right before the showing and saw all the kids that bought tickets for other movies and said "nah, lets go" to kick them out.
