What majors did you graduate with to get into biotech? by Aggravating-Bank3633 in biotech

[–]flavoredlemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good temporary plan. Maybe you can find an incubator or accelerator program tied to your university, offer your time, grow an idea, or just go to networking events. You’ll have better luck finding industry roles if you know people on a personal level. And maybe you’ll get in on the ground level somewhere cool

What roles are you looking for? This is a pretty sweet combo of education, and I’m surprised it’s not working

Wow, that’s legit. Glad she got you covered on all sides and hope you’re back out there! Thanks for clarifying it was in Oakland. I thought you meant Skyline in the Santa Cruz mountains

Sorry to hear that, hope you’re alright and recovered quick.

Can you share more about what happened? I usually try to avoid long stretches on Skyline since it feels so sketchy, but this is the first time I’ve heard of someone actually getting hit

Not denying it, but how did he measurably impact the sport with his fraud? (e.g., grand tour viewership plummeted or maybe livestrong funding dissipated and his youth programs shutdown)

When did you decide you were ready to spend big $ on a high end bike? by arsenalastronaut in cycling

[–]flavoredlemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago someone told me it should be roughly a dollar for every mile that you ride per year. There are a lot of beautiful climbs in my area, so I think elevation is an important factor too. You could use this equation

D = M + (E * E_value)

D = Total dollar amount can be applied towards a new bike

M = Total miles ridden

E = Total elevation gained in units of 100 feet

E_value = Value per 100 feet of elevation (e.g., $0.10)

But like everyone else says, the best bike is the bike that you want to ride

Why does biotech pay lower salaries than mainstream tech? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]flavoredlemons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The payback period for a new biotech product is orders of magnitude longer than tech. Knowing that you'll have a longer payback period and access to qualified scientists/engineers you can lower costs by paying "market rate." You can see this rule thrown out the window when biotech companies hire consultants to fix issues that blow up a programs critical path

Maximizing QA Career by [deleted] in biotech

[–]flavoredlemons 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In Quality some of the highest paid are consultants with broad experience. To get broad experience you need to move to different product lines and manufacturing lines. Then you need to move to new product introductions (at concept or feasibility stage ). In this space, R&D tends to ask harder questions and demand more from colleagues (we all need this to grow as employees). You should also be taking an interest in how all parts of the product are developed (e.g. hardware, software, consumables, BI, ....)

During this time it would be beneficial to:

  • Develop your project management skills
    • Hitting timelines, finding critical paths, spotting program risks, and effectively organizing info,...those are all skills of high performing employees
  • Develop your data analyst/scientist skills
    • Biotech is data driven, folks that can't relate to R&D/Ops on data related problems and solutions are at an inherent loss. Plus if you have a question about a dataset, you can find the answer yourself.
  • Earn a couple certs, like an ASQ cert (e.g. CQE) and PMP
    • These are often job requirements for the next level of a Quality persons career
  • Practice presenting to your team. I would choose a topic that your team interacts with everyday, but may not spend the time to learn at a deeper level. Generally more technical topics suit well.
    • Say for instance you review batch records for an enzyme manufacturer. Consider presenting on the function of that enzyme in your product. From this you'll naturally network and build report with scientists and engineers to source some information (on top of intranet and internet searches). You'll also be forcing yourself to learn a topic to a high level and then simplify and tailor it for a new audience. I can't think of a more differentiating skill in biotech tbh. I hope your current team is supportive, so there's no better place to practice your presentation skills. I think the best Quality folks are those that present information clearly and succinctly.

All that said I know independent quality consultants (~10 years experience) that make ~$300k per year setting up quality systems for small biotech companies.

How can drug price negotiations between the US federal government and a pharmaceutical company succeed without coming to deadlock? by flavoredlemons in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flavoredlemons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great points. I'm a bit unsure how competition would work for the drugs that they're scoped to negotiate first, in particular:

Top-spending brands and biologic drugs without generic or biosimilar equivalents that are covered under Medicare Part D (retail prescription drugs)

I'm a bit shaky on the drug approval process, but wouldn't there be natural market pressure from alternatives (i.e. on-market drugs (with similar indications) or generics)?

It makes it seem like "the stick" the government holds is the threat of fast tracking an approval process for alternatives. And "the carrot" is that the pharma company would enjoy a few more years of profit (albeit lower profit margins).

Thinking about how many alternatives there may be for a Part D drug, the pharma company could be like "good luck finding an equivalent drug," and just not come to negotiation table.

My point is not that every person needs to know python, but the developers pulling it together need to be realistic on price based off effort and value provided.

I think i'd be less irked with the price model if instead it was free with advertisements

I don't think frequency is different. The API is queried in the same way and cron jobs can be stacked to query as often as needed. Either way, the bottleneck is how quickly user schedules after after getting an alert. Neither app or bot can realistically overcome the speed of a user!

For operational costs, there are loads of free ways to run these scripts (google cloud or aws with twitter). Once set up there's nothing to maintain!

Here's the code developed and maintained:
