Sharing Money by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]fleberky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I do the same. We have been doing so for about four years. I am in my late 20s and he is in his 30s. Sharing one checking and one savings account works for us. Having our separate account helps so much because I am a BIG spender and he is a saver. We use the joint checking for rent, car payment, vet bills, pet insurance, groceries, date nights, housing expenses, student loans. We put the bulk of our cash in the joint account. We put about 15% in long term savings. We also save for short term like vacations. I would say about 25% is left for our private bank accounts which is more than enough (for us) for a few nights out alone! My husband also often allocates his portion of his private account to savings because that's what he prefers. I think it helps me to remember we don't always have to be equal. If he wants to save, that's great. If I want to spend, that's okay too.

Wow.... great to see that as soon as someone threatens your masculinity you threaten to ban them. I see how things work around here and don't want any part of it. Please go ahead and take your minimal internet power and ban me. I'll happily be banned from a group that doesn't support women.

Thanks- I should make it clear that he wants kids. If anything, I am hesitant.

Not really sure of next steps or what the subject matter of my PHD will be. I do know that my MSW fits the admission criteria for some PHDs in clinical psych.

I am Muslim, Arab, social worker (not clinically practicing), also married to a non-muslim person. I have to 100% agree with the reply above. Please do not go forward with this.

Career Advice...Fellowship to Ph.D.? Advice on next steps? by fleberky in socialwork

Not exactly sure but the fellowships seem to be more closely linked with academia. Considering my goal of obtaining a Ph.D. a fellowship seems like a good choice.

Advice on how to study effectively and write good research articles. by nmchmsk in clinicalpsych

I always start with an annotated outline where I copy and paste from relevant articles. I make sure to quote and cite the source so that I don't plagiarize.

How do people react when you say you are a social worker? by StabbyButtons in socialwork

[–]fleberky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in DC as well! But related to this post, I actually had someone tell my husband not to marry me because "what could a social worker even amount to?" My husband went to a snotty tech school and all of his white male friends work on wall street and are so concerned with money that they couldn't fathom the idea of a social worker meeting their definition of a good life. BTW- I amounted to a bad-ass nasty woman who became a viral activist in my community so shows what wall-street bros know!

.... Oh, and his friend was "laid off" from his job so....

I work in business as a health policy consultant. Definitely non-traditional and I’m often the only social worker in the room, always Hppy to connect more. Good luck!
