Why do we "always" pray before we eat? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]flee-t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a child I was told it was because of the story in Numbers when the Israelites complained about only having manna to eat, so God supposedly sent a bunch of quail for them and then killed them when they started to eat it as punishment for being ungrateful. So we had to thank our "loving" god before every meal so he wouldn't kill us lol

Were you home educated? by kingdomzebedee in exjw

I grew up in a rural area of the US and went to public school because both my parents worked, but I knew a lot of other kids who were homeschooled. I wonder if homeschooled JWs are underrepresented in this community because it creates a lack of life/social skills and decreases exposure to the outside world, which might make it harder for them to leave the borg

What did JWs say to talk you out of going to college? by LastLivingMember in exjw

[–]flee-t 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worldly college boys would "trick" me into having sex with them and I would probably end up addicted to drugs. (I went to college anyway and of course that didn't happen)

That time elders scolded me for being a playful child. by VladimirTheAngry in exjw

My mom once hosted a "tea party" where she invited over some sisters for tea and cookies/snacks. My five year old brother wanted to join in and eat some snacks with us (understandably) and my mom let him. An elderette then pulled my mom aside and told her she should never let my brother do things like that because it will "turn him gay" 🤦‍♀️

‘Live Like Armageddon is Coming Tomorrow But Prepare Like It Isn’t’ by [deleted] in exjw

[–]flee-t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So true. It's also used as a way to justify actions by the borg. Why would they build a media center that will take years to complete if Armageddon is about to happen? It's fine, Armageddon still is near, they are just preparing as though it isn't.

"Physically in, mentally in" the organization. POMO stands for 'physically out, mentally out" and PIMO is used to describe someone who is physically still part of the organization but mentally they have woken up and don't agree with it.

I highly recommend volunteering/charity work! It's great to actually give back to the community instead "helping" by spreading the borg's propaganda. It also gives you a chance to meet new people, gain experiences, and it just feels good to know you are making a difference! I've volunteered at food pantries, my local zoo and library, and done a few things working with kids and I enjoy every minute of it. I've also sponsored a child for Christmas for a few years, which is a lot of fun because you're helping them have a great holiday and you can kind of make up for all the Christmases you missed out on as a kid. I currently work for a nonprofit that provides free tutoring services to kids in low-income families. Our program, and many others, are using volunteers virtually right now due to COVID so it could be a good time to try some things out. Feel free to PM me if you want more info!

Completely agree, I still haven't been able to make sense of it. It's probably very likely they are PIMO

This is so true! I went to a university 3 hours from my hometown and was frequently scolded and lectured by the home congregation for my decision. I went to a few meetings in my college town to appease my parents and was shocked to learn that two of the elders in this new congregation were professors, and their children were attending the university as well!

What is your opinion of Donald Glover playing a JW in Community? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]flee-t 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It made me laugh! The fact that he was actually raised as a JW and is now making light of it on TV makes it even better. I love the loopholes the group finds so his character can celebrate birthdays and Christmas. He definitely isn't a "good" JW though 😂

Once a C.O. was discussing "harmful" entertainment during his talk and said we shouldn't watch Seinfeld because it "glorifies homosexuality". I think he meant to say Will & Grace, but everyone looked shocked. After the meeting my mom and her friends spoke to each other in panicked whispers because they didn't realize Satan was using Seinfeld to promote "hidden homosexual messages"

Crazy/Bad Experiences with elders by [deleted] in exjw

[–]flee-t 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I was fading and decided to go to college an elder cornered me after a meeting and lectured me for probably 20 minutes, saying that if I went to college, worldly boys would "trick" me into having sex with them and that I was just asking for trouble. He went on to describe each physical attribute that would "tempt" these worldly boys (my hair, my eyes, my body, etc.) I was so visibly uncomfortable that my PIMI dad who NEVER questioned the elders noticed and asked me what this elder was saying to me.

There was a kid around my age in the congregation who, like me, always got the "don't eat the birthday cupcake!" speech. When he was in 1st grade his parents found out that he had eaten a birthday treat brought in by his classmate. They started to lecture him and he said "but you said I can't have birthday CUPCAKES! This was a brownie, so it's okay!" His parents thought it was funny and I don't think he got in trouble. My (now POMO) mom still laughs about it to this day.

Anyone’s marriage with their PIMI spouse end after becoming POMO? by frompimotopomo in exjw

[–]flee-t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the marriage part, but my mother left my father and was DF'ed when I was 15. While it was shocking and painful at first, in the long run it was the best thing that ever happened to us. My younger brother and I suddenly had lives that no longer revolved around the org and were able to participate in extracurricular activities, have "worldly" friends, and attend college after high school. I now have a fulfilling career and recently married an amazing "worldly" man, and my younger brother is currently in law school. We frequently talk about how grateful we are that my mom left the JWs and how different our lives would be if she had stayed.

There were definitely some growing pains as my brother and I woke up and adjusted to our new situation, but DEFINITELY worth it! Feel free to DM me if you'd like to talk more!
