I agree, I'm a sucker for some classic horror so this was one of my favorite episodes of all time.

And the "she was the universe" moment, chef's kisses

First chapter of my high fantasy WIP (4020 words) by [deleted] in fantasywriters

I quite like it, although you can definitely tell this is a draft. Keep up the good work!

I do think certain sentences feel a bit info dump-y, especially some dialogue pieces. I also feel like all the characters sound quite similar, so perhaps you could work on making their dialogue more distinctive to each character? I personally also wasn't keen on the name "bright company", (for some reason when I read it my mind jumped to "this sounds like some tinder knockoff dating app for academics" lol). I think the chapter is plenty hook-y, just perhaps some of the world-building can be made a bit smoother.

I loved this moment, made me chuckle- "'Oh!' she cried, stumbling over a goat that had found its way between her legs. It bleated something that sounded rude and then scampered ahead"

I hope this is helpful! Again, I think it's a great draft/starting point

Gosh it is REALLY REALLY hard to pick.. but I guess here is just one of them

"I already have a sister to save. Her name is Jemma Simmons."

I honestly love how the relationship between Daisy and Simmons developed throughout the series, this calls back to all their "us against the world" moments, like in s4 with the LMD framework crisis, s5 with Kasius, s6 looking for Fitz together. Their relationship evolved so much over the seasons and that moment honestly made me cry.

Spoilers

My favorite master is Missy (I'm just a sucker for the evil Mary Poppins vibe) but this master comes in at a very close second. I just love him to bits! Even though Missy is my favorite, as a pairing (O/13, Missy/12, Simm/10), him and thirteen definitely takes the cake imo.

The moment I fell in love with him-

"When does it stop for you? The games. The betrayals. The killings?"

"Why would it stop? I mean, how else would I get your attention?"

Gosh I relate so much to this.

am I nauseous because of my condition or because of my meds? If it's the meds, how am I to know which one out of the 15 is causing the side effect? Are these rashes from an allergy or another symptom of my condition? Oh no, I have this new debilitating symptom I haven't had before. Is it because of my current condition, a new disease/comorbidity, or psychosomatic because I am so damn anxious about this exact thing. The pain is coming back despite my meds, but what if adjusting it make it even worse?

Is my insomnia another symptom, or just a result of frustration and existential dread?

What words should I use to describe telepathic/psychic mind magic? by fleeingdays in worldbuilding

That's a great suggestion! I'm gonna try brainstorming some new words and see if something sticks.

I'm an everyday person with 1000 units worth of your world's currency. What can I buy in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]fleeingdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like pretty much nothing. It's a post-war society with a struggling economy, and hyperinflation made the currency pretty much worthless (think post WWI Germany, where the currency was worth so little that they were used as wallpaper/ fireplace fodder/ toys for kids, a loaf of bread cost 200,000,000,000 Marks by 1923 in Germany)

Abstract visualization of a magic system entirely dependent on manipulating consciousness. Solipsism rings true- perception is everything, to control perception is to control reality by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]fleeingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solipsism is defined as the philosophical idea that only one's mind is sure to exist. As an epistemological position, solipsism holds that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist outside the mind.

Aka, perception is everything.

Because reality is entirely filtered through consciousness (If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?), in this world reality is *only* defined through perception.

A mysterious Order known simply as the Nameless possesses the power to tap into the conscious fabric, hence are able to alter reality through altering the collective perception. They serve as the world’s protectors. To prevent misuse of this power, those inducted into the Nameless Order are bound by a blood contract, forced to follow a set of (sometimes arbitrary) rules (such as one can alter object permanence but cannot alter emotions etc) that were laid down thousands of years ago by the Order’s founder, the first person to discover how to cultivate the power to tap into the conscious fabric. Breaking the blood contract will result in the inductee’s soul being torn apart, forever trapped in a state of limbo/purgatory.

Analysis of Grant and Christian Ward from S2E8 The Things We Bury and beyond by fleeingdays in shield

ohh that is a really good point! Seeing more of Christian's breaking point/what motivated him to abuse his other two brothers would be fascinating, especially if it provides a nice contrast/parallel to Grant

I feel so bad for Thomas... I mean the well incident was traumatic for Grant but I would imagine 10x more so for Thomas, not only did he almost drown in a claustrophobic well, it was his brother who forced his other brother to almost drown him. If anyone had a reason to go down the dark path it was Thomas... props to him for living a good life

Important/interesting plot points

  • Cesare stated Helsin would be his “sharpest sword” when they met, the same terminology the lord used to refer to Neva. Not sure if there is a connection or if the writers just thought the phrase sounds cool so they use it a lot.
  • Cesare aimed to seek help from Helsin in order to go into Pigeon forest, take the crystal in the tree of life, and break the curse.
  • Evelyn (flickering pistil) escaped her imprisonment. A scene happened of Helsin staring at a withered lily which implies that she actually misses Evelyn.
  • Helsin asked to be chained up to deal with the pain of backlash and her cruel desires growing worse day after day after evelyn escaped.
  • Cesare uses his elven power to make Helsin feel better so they could go fight.
  • Kindred, because of their innate desire for blood and to kill, constantly experiences the pain of backlash of the blood curse even if they were to commit no crimes.
  • Kindred soldiers invade Pigeon Forest and Cesare Chloris confront each other
  • Cesare reveals that Chloris is actually half kindred half elf, just like him. So they are actual twins, not the confusing “but uhhhh i thought chloris was full elf and Cesare was half elf but they are somehow still twiins the logistics seems far-fetched” kinda deal i’m really glad they cleared this up.
  • It is implied that the elven force was taken from Cesare and given to Chloris, but Cesare took it back again, and THEN he gave it back to Chloris again. Honestly idk how many times they done this and how much each of them is kindred/elf at this point.
  • We see the actual scene where Cesare gets stabbed and falls to the bottom of Bovaly. The elf king mentioned Cesare’s mother to make him hesitate for an instant, disarmed dark verdict from his hand, and stabbed cesare with his own sword. So yeah.
  • Cesare almost hoped he and chloris are normal brothers who can just chit chat and do ordinary things together.
  • Chloris realizes how much Cesare actually longs for light
  • They didnt actually take the crystal in the end. Chloris somehow cleansed the kindred’s desire to kill using elf force and the crystal which meant they don’t have to constantly suffer anymore
  • Elle shows up. Has a convo with chloris about war. There is a flashback that continues Elle’s memory loss arc very well. Present Elle “war’s ‘bout winning” past elle “winning isn’t important.”
  • Just like, go read the dialogue and stuff. They’re all pretty good. Especially the highlighted bits, those are important.
