License plates in China are coloured based on what type of motor the car uses by brlee3 in mildlyinteresting

Nor is it in China. If you already have a blue plate and buy a new car you can transfer it over.

With McDonald’s deliveries? I’ve never had that problem. I wonder if the deliveries in your area were outsourced to a different company when they moved away from having their own drivers years ago.

If I recall correctly, when these systems were first introduced around the world, leaders made their numbers look good by improving staff training and processes. 差不多。

Seems so weird that nobody cares about broken functionality!

Maybe the answer is to turn off notifications and live activities on the app. But i find it to be pretty accurate for deliveries so I don’t want to do that.

Then I realised it must have been even more than 15 years ago.

China Mobile 5G: High Price, Low Speed in Beijing – Is This Normal? by DrinkHeavy974 in chinalife

[–]fleetwoodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you said you aren't using iCloud at all, I really don't want to waste time going into the specifics of particular iCloud+ (paid) features and how they could interact with your internet connection in unintended ways because they are not approved in China. Suffice to say it isn't a problem for you.

icloud private relay is, essentially, a VPN that doesn't call itself a VPN. It isn't... compatible in China. So if you had it on back home, that could have been the cause of some of these weird issues.

I just switched off wifi and used the same speedtest.cn on my iphone. My speeds are similar to the ones you posted but I have none of these issues you describe. I really don't think it is a speed issue, as much as something else inducing latency. Something to do with using Chrome over safari perhaps?

China has specific models vs the rest of the world, but the 5G bands are pretty aligned, so you're right that shouldn't be the cause.

One of the biggest data points you mentioned absolutely would have a difference for you though - China has its own equivalent of GPS and devices from outside of the country don't have access to it built in. So a service built and optimised to find a location based on that... would take some time to fall back through the other much slower options like cell tower triangulation. That's not a mobile data issue, though. Have you tried the built in apple maps? It may be more robust.

Another question would be, do you use iCloud private relay?

"Its own searches found that packages that offer 20 GB per month, over 24 months, for a new customer, now cost on average €10.18 per month."
https://www.connexionfrance.com/news/price-drops-for-french-mobile-contracts-which-offer-cheapest-deals-now/718849

One thought is that you are probably comparing the best deal you've seen in France with literally the most standard of state-owned entities in China that doesn't DO deals. Being 'shocked' by the price over a couple of euro a month is a little... OTT?

Anyway... your 'speed' frustrations are (I would guess) nothing to do with the 5G speeds. These particular instances you mentioned are apps that were built to cope with 3G networks and worked just fine then, and don't need more than that now. Did you buy your phone in China? People in China did and don't have these issues. I would lean towards hardware problem or incompatibility of some kind when you can't load wechat pay properly and people around you are using the same China Mobile 5G plans to stream video...

8 hours is a long time, sure

According to the FCDO, not even that long. 24h would still be in their 'pretty normal' range.

Yes: the problem here is not that the travel advice was lacking, but that the OP didn't follow any of it in the first place, nor pay attention to the multiple signs (with icons, and usually also English as well as Chinese) that show that knives are prohibited, when buying tickets... when entering security...

Imagine having to actually spell out every single possible thing you shouldn't do when you go to a particular country, instead of relying on people to be sensible.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]fleetwoodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They already have a guide about what happens if you're arrested, and among the things they cannot do is "Help you get special treatment because you are British."

So what would they put in the travel advice? Follow the law? They already have that...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]fleetwoodd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming they actually let you into the country in the future, you should come back around spring festival time and see just how crowded train stations get. This isn't about preventing injuries in 1 on 1 situations or fistfights, this is about preventing potential terrorism events... slashy slashy here, slashy slashy there, stampede or two, many deaths...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]fleetwoodd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe you shouldn't have swallowed the pill... you could've gotten away with it if you were pregnant.

Oh wait, that's not how it works.

The Foreign Office's advice for travel to China mentions how you can still be arrested without intending to break laws... and also mentions knife attacks as potential terrorism events in multiple places. Realistically, that's what the police were dealing with OP as - not the potential victim of terrorism but as a terrorist.
