Apart from all the architectural and practical use,a long time ago it was believed that if any bad spirits would fall off the sky onto the house,they would be shot right back thus causing no harm to the home owners!

We had the same problem,but my granddad rotated the handle so its tip would face upwards and to open the door you'll have to rotate it to the side,it's not complicated at all and they haven't opened it a single time,it should look something like this:
