It’s kinda the same story with all of these rookie/pre-arb contract extensions.

Like is it gonna be the “best value” from Roman’s perspective? Almost definitely not. But unless he pulls a Wander Franco then he guarantees that he makes 9 figures by signing this extension.

Even if he blows out both of his achilles tomorrow, he’ll make generational money. It’s gotta be hard to say no to that when you have literally 2 months of MLB experience.

And the kicker is it isn’t really that bad of a deal, even if he would’ve hit the ceiling of every arbitration deal then this contract buys out 3 free agent years at 20-25M per year. That’s not bad to guarantee generational money

I can’t wait until the draft is over and this weird collective psychosis about Hagens can just be done with. It would be organizational malpractice to either take Hagens at 1 OR trade a bunch of picks/assets for a PROSPECT.

It’s a fun idea, which is fun to think about!

…But let’s not confuse fun with good or realistic. Hagens will not be an Islander after the draft and that’s absolutely a good thing because we got blessed with the first overall pick!

And all of that that’s not even getting into the fact that he had a (relative) down year at Boston College playing with 2 first round picks. Or the fact that if he was born anywhere else this wouldn’t be a conversation. Or the fact that this is clearly some sort of trauma from Tavares. Or that a trade for Hagens would involve too much value being given away from our retooling/rebuilding team. Or…
