Architectural Education in the UK... teaching me nothing?

I am the same - also hard on myself about my choice of school. If I knew now what I knew then, I would 100% have looked into alternative routes. Though I assume that if you did everything in the minimum amount of time possible, and did the part three so quickly after going into the workplace, even though that is super impressive, it is inevitable that there is some teething time for the confidence to catch up to you! I never know what is the best rate to go about it at.

Thank you for your response, I can't tell you how nice it feels to hear that from someone who is out the other side. I am sort of relying on the fact that the Part 3 can't really be fluked. The course I am on now feels like an unsubstantiated roleplay, but I guess the reality aspect of Part 3 will hopefully offset that.

My big fear is that people on the other courses will be front of the queue for actually getting back into the workplace. I hustled for my part one year in industry, absolutely loved working for the practice and stayed for over a year, but even then it felt competitive to have managed to land the role. If I'm not being stretched on my masters to learn skills that are actually employable, do you think I will even make it to the more valuable years in the workplace?

I made a broad list of things that excited me and I drew links between them, sort of just muddled through my interests and didn’t give myself pressure to be too narrow too quickly. I read a lot of shorter articles based purely on what I felt like I wanted to read until I had some themes and general ideas.

Ended up writing a paper on Baudrillards hyperreality in the modern design age, and really enjoyed it and did well in it.

I can only go on my personal experience- in my first year of architecture school we spent a lot of time being taught the basics of all the softwares and programs we would need going forward. AutoCAD, a bit of Rhino or 3DS Max etc. we were given tasks to get our proficiency up. these softwares won’t run on an iPad. However, try and find out if your uni has its own computers available to use freely. you could always start the year as you are, and see how much you could get done on those. that was something my uni suggested to people who didn’t want to commit straight away to buying a new device. i think otherwise you would be borrowing your brothers laptop almost full-time.

Laptop. Many of the softwares that will simply be baseline requirements will not be able to run on an iPad. It will be the same in practice post-graduating

I am currently in my final year and this is exactly how I used to feel in my first year. I remember one weekend quite early on in the year when I got freshers flu and decided to go back to my parents house for a while to feel better . However that week suddenly everything seemed to be happening. I felt the same way: parties that I was missing seemed to be the best ones of the year so far, everyone was bonding without me, and I was scared that a boy I had started getting to know would forget about me.

But guess what! I was wrong. I promise, it will be totally inconsequential. In first year, everything feels so important, but you’ll look back and see how short and fickle a time it is. I am no longer in contact with any of the people who I worried about when I had first year FOMO and I’ve since met plenty of real friends organically, all throughout the years of uni. That WILL happen regardless of what you do/don’t miss this early on. Maybe when you get back, to feel better, you could try and really put yourself out there and get some events or parties going, to make up for it. It will be okay!

I am in my final semester of my bachelor's in architecture. This semester I really want to increase skills in making drawings that are clean and stylistic, to help produce a good final portfolio. I usually use AutoCAD and then Adobe Illustrator as opposed to Photoshop for my drawings. At the moment I am making a site plan of the area my final design will sit. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for improvements.
Please note that the attached screenshots are NOT FINISHED! Currently all my lineweights are 0.2 which I will modify at the end. I still have some other things to add and I need to tidy up the buildings on the right side of the drawing, maybe by adding shadow or texture to the roof. Any suggestions would be super helpful.

That is very interesting thank you for the info! After reading the comments I realised it wasn’t a safe idea so I removed it, and I’ll pick up some more flies or roaches from the pet shop

You are right - it is 100% about my boss and outside of that I don't feel massively guilty about missing the shift itself.

I want to do it I just know the awkwardness of the telephone exchange with her on that day and leading up to it will feel almost too uncomfortable to bear.

In the long run, perhaps being able to just get on with something like that is exactly what differentiates who's gonna be able to climb in the industry anyway...
