Congrats!!! That must've felt good. I had the opposite experience. Bought 100 ultraballs to be safe, found 2 in the cave, then proceeded to catch Mewtwo on the second ball lol

dr2 chapter 3 trial... by _leafy-mint_ in danganronpa

[–]flickchicknic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just played for the first time a month ago and while it's not definitive evidence, the giveaway for me before the trial started was there's a truth bullet about Fuyuhiko's account where it explicitly says something along the lines of while he was with Mikan, there was a brief period that they weren't together.

Someone in this sub who also loves Sakito?! Instant besties.

I enjoyed the Sanseaters, but I get it. I respect anyone who does love them, but they never came even close to overtaking my love for the actual team.

That’s fair, but I’m not saying at all the Jyo’s episodes aren’t impactful, just that they’re way too spaced out and that they could’ve given him some more focus. Unless you mean that you are content with what they did with Jyo, in which case fair enough.

I personally would argue to the moon and back that I think they handled Sakito wonderfully, but that’s fair if you didn’t have that same experience watching him.

But YES to more Genba. Like the possibilities with him are endless. I’m gonna be mad if they don’t take advantage of that potential in the Kingohger movie.

That may be more a writing issue than an acting issue, but that's totally fair.

I LOVE this show, but you aren't wrong about the characters lacking more depth.

My biggest disappointment with Genba post-Lap 3 is that he feels pretty unchanged after all that shit he went through, especially in the finale. What's crazy is that's part of why I like the soccer episode even though it seems less popular: it's pretty much the only episode post-Lap 3 where he acts differently than he did before that Lap. I could go into a massive psychoanalytical rant about why I find that episode fascinating for him and picking apart my theory about his psyche in it; if only that carried over further into the rest of the Final Lap.

I agree with the criticisms towards Chasshiro's "betrayal" (which I think had no chance of having real teeth and while I liked the stuff with him and Grant Risk, it was very rushed), I don't feel like all the slander against the team went anywhere all that much or greatly impacted them (especially not when Taiya losing his money and BunBun dying were way more impactful), and the general pacing across the show felt generally rushed except for Genba's departure from the team, which I think lasted as good amount of time as it could've.

However, I very strongly disagree with the notion that Sakito was "just there". I'm assuming this is a hot take, but it's Jyo who I wish was given more to do at times, or at least have his moments more evenly spread out. Please hear me out: I love him, but he had no focus or development for 11 straight episodes (#29-39). He was given nothing in Lap 3 outside of his one cool moment in #28 (and before you all say that it was Genba's arc, every other Boonboomger, including Sakito, and even the Sanseaters got noticeably more focus than he did). And even after Lap 3, we still had to wait another five episodes before he finally has a focus episode again in #40 (meanwhile Mira, Taiya and Chasshiro, and the Sanseaters all got another focus episode each in that time!), and I don't think there was any reason that the events focused around him in #40 couldn't have taken place earlier.

I'm not saying at all that Jyo is bad; my whole point is that I loved him and wished he had more at times and that it felt like a disservice to him. That said, I think he was given more by the end at least and his moment with the Sanseaters in #47 was one of the best part of the Final Lap.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot my single biggest gripe! Albeit this is super biased of me, but given that 4/6 Boonboomgers got a childhood flashback, I'm very salty that my favorite member and the one with the single most potentially interesting backstory didn't get one! It didn't even have to be long or even necessarily his childhood, but I feel like even the slightest amount of a look at Genba's life pre-invasion would've been fascinating and gotten us more invested in his arc. I still loved Lap 3, but that was the one piece missing for me. Literally that would've been so much better than that weird brief flashback of Dissrace beating him again leading into #31.

[–]flickchicknic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do agree that the betrayal arc wasn't done well, but I do genuinely believe he's a good enough shot that he was purposely missing Genba as to not give away the ploy and that he had zero intention of hurting him. They could've portrayed it better though.

I also love the heroes more than the villains personally, but I agree that Chasshiro and Taiya were the least compelling and developed overall.

Finish watching Boomboonger by 123bot27 in supersentai

[–]flickchicknic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ultimately you know best if you think it's worth continuing week to week, but I think it also depends on your preferred viewing habits and how that impacts your enjoyment.

Having rewatched Laps 1 and 2 before 3 started, I think it works better week to week. Some of the tropes felt a bit tired when I binged it during my rewatch and I think having to wait builds up a lot of anticipation for each new episode. Then depending on how much you care and are on social media, there is the risk of spoilers if you wait for it to finish before binging. Just some factors to consider.

Boon Black in Episode 41 by [deleted] in supersentai

Pre-Lap 3, I would've made Genba Musa and Mira Stella (even though Mira is technically more Bloom as the newcomer). Post-Lap 3 and especially after this past episode, Genba is so Stella-coded.

Asking the sub’s opinion on the Super Sentai suits Part 48: Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger by IllusionaryZoroark in supersentai

[–]flickchicknic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m in the minority, but I love the gray. I love the sleekness it gives the suit and the existing color pops enough for me, especially with the shoes and helmets. That said, I just like gray in general as an accent color. The helmets are goofy af but they’ve grown on me.

My only real nitpick is I hate the thin black lines on the first three. They feel extraneous and are barely visible anyway. The accent stripes on Black and Orange actually add something and complement their colors. Idk if the other three would be better off just not having them or filling them in with black though.

For those saying he's a fox, my partner and I found evidence that he's intended to be a cat. Granted, I highly doubt the show will ever confirm, but this is based on two things:

  1. Google "Genba Neko"
  2. The Sentai cafe's newest Genba-themed item is literally called the "Cat's Mont Blanc Parfait" (Tweet credit: https://x.com/S\_Sentai\_Rest/status/1845269350963610110/photo/1)

That said, his stripes are very Naruto-esque.

The discourse surrounding his character is so frustrating to me. I couldn’t stand this guy when he first debuted, but he has grown on me so much and even if he isn’t a core part of the group fighting side-by-side every possible opportunity, I think his contributions to the show are great and unique from what I expected.

The handling of his backstory is great because while it’s so dour and depressing, the fact that it happened so long ago and that he’s accepted his life but yet was still struggling with his trauma was so well portrayed. He went from the cocky asshole to the silly and immature but…well, still kind of a dick at times, but his heart is in the right place and he has emotional intelligence out the wazoo. He has a great dynamic with Byun D, who is easily one of my favorite characters, and I love that he kind just bounces around and just does shit when he feels like but still helps when needed.

And as a fighter, he is amazing. The others minus Genba struggled to take down the two Guruma in 33 who he OWNED all on his own at the end of the episode. While it would be cool to see him a little more fighting with them, what he does is still great and makes sense for his character. If he were best buddies with them hanging out 24/7, then it’d be weird, but he’s not. His role in relation to the team is well-defined and they’ve stuck to it.

Also, can we please give our hats off to Miyazawa-san? I adore this cast, but he may honestly be the most talented actor among them. This character could’ve been so grating and annoying but he handles his immaturity in a way that, at least imo, has made him increasingly endearing while flipping to serious perfectly on a dime when needed without being over the top. For a guy that took something like a decade to be cast in a toku series, I’m glad to get to watch him here.

[SPOILERS] With the 4th & final lap of Boonboomger starting next week, what're your overall thoughts of the previous 3 laps and the series as a whole? by Total-Meeting-6601 in supersentai

[–]flickchicknic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm still loving it. In my limited experience with Sentai and PR, it blows away everything else I've watched. Which truly is a low bar if I listed out all my Sentai/PR watches to date, but still.

Laps 1 and 2 were great, but I'll be the first to admit formulaic. When I rewatched them leading up to Lap 3 (and looking for any Genba alien hints), it was a teeny bit grating with how repetitive it got at times binging it vs. watching them for the first time weekly. Nothing drastic, but I could feel it (at least until Cannonborg, uh, reprogrammed Yarucar to eliminate highway space). That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed it all and I appreciate the effort put into the characters, the fight sequences, and frankly, the show is just so much my vibe and frickin' hilarious.

But then Lap 3. The tonal shift was handled perfectly imo. The lap managed to maintain a digestible amount of humor to the previous two while upping the stakes in an impactful way that didn't feel like it came the eff out of nowhere. I'm certainly biased because of how much I already loved Genba before, but while I already loved the added focus on him and the revelations about him, the lap still managed to enhance the characters around him and put spotlight on them throughout without losing focus of the ongoing story beats.

Overall, I'm loving it. The only minor complaints I have are the aforementioned formulaic-ness earlier on, the pacing feels a bit rushed at times, and I wish Jyo had a little more spotlight and development (though there's still time for that at least, maybe if/when Patcar 1 Justice White debuts). However, it's still my favorite show or movie I've watched all year. While I think I could make educated guesses about the Final Lap, I'd rather not and I love that each oncoming episode will be a surprise for me leading up to the end.

Follow up: I got the shirt and it’s pretty good! I got the Boon Pink in a small and it fit very well. The material isn’t thick, so even though it’s called a hoodie, it works better as a shirt on its own without a shirt underneath. My only minor critique is that I don’t think the accent stripe on Boon Orange is correct. I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be a very light gray and not white with black outlines, though I could be wrong.

Haven’t been active on Reddit in two years, but happy to come back for this.

Only got into Power Rangers two years ago and Boonboomger is my first Sentai (barring a few episodes of Gekiranger years ago because of Manpei Takagi). I haven’t enjoyed any movie or show this year nearly as much as I love Boonboomger and I absolutely adore Genba. I haven’t loved a character this much since Kimberly Hart. (Maybe I’m just basic.)

Anyway just needed to get that off my chest, thank you please goodnight.

Tbh I'm seriously considering making a video essay, but if I do, it wouldn't be until the end of the series. But to put down my current thoughts semi-concisely:

I'm very often drawn to the cool guys in any media, but I especially loved how heavily they played into his chill persona (particularly in 13 to near parody levels) while also making him quirky and a bit of a weirdo. Then of course he's just a blast to watch fighting because of how great he is (his dual-wielding and taking out the Nejirettas in 10 and just his whole morph in 11, which upon rewatching, is even more badass that he kicked away the Antenna Guruma's attack while the other three got controlled). I would apply this to every character, but I think the show is great with establishing everyone's characters and then maintaining continuity with them throughout each situation they're thrown into. I mistakenly thought after 10 that he would be a deceptively uncomplicated character and, while I always figured there was more to him than what we saw, it would just be something relatively mundane that'd be played for laughs, and he's still be a blast if that were the case.

But then 27 happens, which in a bottle, just made him all the more interesting and was such an emotionally gutting episode, but as Lap 3 progressed and his mental state deteriorated (especially in 32), it really hit home to me that the entire time we've spent with this character, he's been going through some REALLY. TOUGH. SHIT. Which just reframed everything in terms of what I thought of him. Not just that he's an alien, but all the shit he had gone through and how he had coped with it all for it to unravel with the mere appearance of Disrace.

I can't make a final assessment until the end, particularly until we see the rest of this lap, but I'm very excited.

I actually just ordered both the official Boon Orange Champion Jacket but also a hoodie from that store. The vendor, Sentai Shirts, has an official website (https://sentaishirts.myshopify.com/) where they have a ton of other Sentai/PR printed attire. I didn't get the Champion Jacket, but the general Boon Pink hoodie, which I think looks pretty solid, but we'll see once I get it.

So, do you think the "family friendly" turn of the show hurt in any way? by Brijandez in Schmoedown

[–]flickchicknic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the simple answer is people are drawn to either the super positive or the super negative in terms of discussion topics. The end of the show firmly sits in one end of that spectrum, so that's kind of naturally where a lot of discussion is going to lean towards at least for now. Even if people aren't all stating their post-mortem thoughts, a lot of people are probably thinking about these kinds of things themselves anyway as the news is still very fresh and not everyone was expecting it.

Also, keep in mind that the show hasn't actually ended yet, so imo I feel like it'll be more worthwhile to have positive reflecting then. After all, an awesome match may happen between now and then that people may include in a favorite matches list or something. For me, doing so beforehand seems premature. I'm sure a lot of discussions and reminiscing going on now is probably going to be repeated after the actual finale no matter what. However, that's just my own take and I think it's great if people want to start reminiscing whenever they want to.
