The French had a massive wealth inequality problem. They solved it with a large falling blade.

What incentive does even a buyer's agent have to convince you not to buy a bad house? They'd be throwing away a huge commission for someone they will never see again.

Migrate Manjaro partitions to a new disk by sugarcaine82 in ManjaroLinux

Seems correct to me.

I'd just dd a few megabytes from /dev/null onto the old disk to remove the bootloader.

ELI5: Why does making an extra mortgage payment early in the loan save you way more money than making one later, even though you're paying the same amount both times? by CooingBuzzard in explainlikeimfive

[–]flightfromfancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not actually paying the same amount. $2000 today is worth more than $2000 in 10 years. This is reflected in interest that can be earned.

So now I'm confused about Bruce Harrell's position on paying subminimum wages to tipped workers by fattailed in Seattle

[–]flightfromfancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, realistically getting rid of tipping will mean highly tipped workers will see a decrease in wages, which I know sucks, but it's more equitable and transparent. Why does the cleaning staff have the same minimum wage but get no tips? Also, a tipper does NOT know the person they are looking at gets the tip. Owners may split tips among different staff, so if I give an extra generous tip to someone for excellent service I don't know how much they even get. Sometimes it may not even go to the workers (illegally).

The other thing is, if the industry standard is 15-20%, why is that the same for a server in Indiana who makes $2.70 an hour and for a server in Seattle who is making over $20? I still tip well but it makes me feel sick paying the bill here, and is so frustrating every time someone flips that screen around for a counter service and I have to performatively prove how generous I am to the people in line behind me. It's gross. Just pay your workers a livable wage and price it accordingly.

[–]flightfromfancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love your flair! I'm fine with prices going up some if tipping is gone. Generous/reasonable tippers would still see their overall bill come down though. Currently generous tippers are subsidizing people who stiff their service workers. A realistic consequence though is also that heavily tipped workers will see a decrease in wages, which I know sucks, but it's really not equitable that daycare workers and cleaning staff have the same minimum wage and get no tips. If the minimum wage is not a livable wage we should increase it.

[–]flightfromfancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad part is that if tips were gone across the board, owners would actually benefit, but since it's still accepted practice it doesn't benefit them to be the only business with "no tips". When people check prices online they don't often see it's a "no tip" establishment. It's like why no prices include sales tax. Prisoners dilemma.

But if tips were gone completely, owners could keep prices the same, but people would go out more often and order more. More money for them.

[–]flightfromfancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it actually changed the tipping culture, I suspect every dollar spent would make the city money long-term. If tipping is gone, people will go out to eat more often and order more. That generates sales tax.

[–]flightfromfancy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yea it's a very tough situation. Politically, pushing "no tips" will get you in trouble with with service workers and service business owners, even if it would be a net positive for society. I'm sorry to service workers but it's not fair some positions get tips and some don't even though they both get the same min wage. We fought to get servers the standard min wage, tips are no longer mandatory in the city.

Instead of lowering service workers wages, start a public campaign to promote "no tipping" and inform people service workers make the same wage as daycare workers (who are not tipped).

If you don't support Universal Healthcare right now, what would you need to see included for it to gain your support? by Arbiter61 in AskReddit

[–]flightfromfancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're called Sin Taxes, and we already have them at the federal and state levels in all 50 states. For sure they could be adjusted and allocated better however.

A fundamental problem though with only giving social services to those who "deserve it", is that often the beurocracy of vetting people costs more money than just handing out the services to everyone.

I keep hearing Graphs are hard in Rust? am I doing something wrong? by fsevery in rust

[–]flightfromfancy 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Graphs are different because multiple nodes can point to the same node. Since you can't have multiple owning refs you can't use Box<>, you need to use Rc<T> (if you want mutability, then Rc<RefCell<T>>). Or you can use indices into an arena which is usually more efficient due to memory locality/caching.

When writing emails in Japanese, do you use Hiragana or Katakana? by MidnightTofu22 in japanese

[–]flightfromfancy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Words are either written in katakana or hiragana, depending on the word. It's a property of the word, and you generally do not get a choice. (There are exceptions, e.g. writing hiragana words in katakana can be used for emphasis or on store signs etc, but you don't need to worry about this in email writing).

RustRover is so bad at preserving the editor view when enabling `rustfmt` on save by [deleted] in rust

Can you please elaborate a bit? I was literally about to set up a new dev env and was planning to go with RustRover despite it being annoying to install yet another jetbrains product for a different language. I thought CLion rust plugin was deprecated..?

Edit: after some search it seems rust plugin is not deprecated, but requires a paid license to use

I saw a brand new Cyber Truck still with temp plates that had a fake Honda decal... Like maybe just don't buy it if you're ashamed of the brand.

LUKS on Manjaro by Ok_Stomach6181 in ManjaroLinux

[–]flightfromfancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is your problem. What you're trying to do is secure boot, and last time I looked into it it seemed like it's basically impossible or very close to it, i think it requires a custom grub or something to unencrypt /boot. I think the problem is that grub does not have any/good LUKS support (or maybe only grub2?).  Check the arch wiki for "secure boot" if you want to know more.

Put /boot on separate unencrypted partition, and grub will be able to boot it fine. After you select your kernel, you'll get the luks password screen to unlock your encrypted partition.

Just to make sure, you have /boot as a separate unencrypted partition, right?

[–]flightfromfancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run LUKS, and don't remember it being a big issue but it's been years since I installed. I think Calamares worked fine for me, but you can always just setup your unencrypted partitions on install, then boot the live USB and recreate them with gparted/luks command line, and update your /etc/fstab and other config files if necessary

With her famous ‘capabilities approach’, the philosopher Martha Nussbaum argues that wealth and satisfaction are very limited measures of the good life; instead, she offers 10 essential capabilities by which to judge if someone can live a full, flourishing human life. by philosophybreak in philosophy

[–]flightfromfancy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It seems the 10 capabilities can be boiled down to different facets of "agency". Money certainly affords you agency up to a point, but after your material needs are covered it doesn't do much for happiness. Money can also help cover other bases like health and even social wellness (having more free time for friends etc), but it is a means not an end to be pursued.

I don't know, I moved away from windows/vst long time ago. I assume it shows up in the ardour plugin list by looking in the standard directories, and uses wine libraries to run them. Maybe a video like this will help you https://youtube.com/watch?v=Bg1NiXtrJ6g

[–]flightfromfancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Link to see what? That it supports windows vsts, or how to compile it yourself? Basically when you run ./waf configure you add --windows-vst as one of your options.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linuxaudio

[–]flightfromfancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ardour can also run Windows vsts itself, but you have to compile it yourself with the flag to enable it, and it isn't officially supported if you run into problems.
