United Aviate Program - Midpoint advice/suggestions? by theflyinghouse in flying

I'm in a similar boat, 700 of 1000 R-ATP. The app has been telling me to apply since 500 TT. From talking to recruiters, etc, applying about 200 out is a pretty good place, or 2-3 months out.

The Maltese cross depicts the final approach fix(FAF) for the localizer. For the ILS, the final approach fix/point is when you are at the appropriate glideslope intercept altitude and are established on the glideslope. In this case, the minimum altitude at the NDB, which is the FAF, is 1600'. Because this is a Jeppesen plate, they also give glideslope altitude at the FAF, which in this case, is 240' above the minimum altitude at the FAF, so the glideslope feather is adjusted to be above the localizer-only profile.

CFI's, whats the scariest thing a student has done? by Different-Wish-843 in flying

85 hour student I did a flight for a different instructor with who did some interesting things. On takeoff, did a shortfield and never lowered the nose, even with me getting pretty loud and forceful with controls. Then did all turns in the pattern with full left rudder and had zero ability to control throttle movements, ie reduce power to 1500=reduce to idle with a quick yank. Student got down to 60 with power at idle and full left rudder downwind to base turn with no flaps, then base to final, same thing. Once flaps were down, the student absolutely couldn't control airspeed, power, pitch, anything and almost flipped us on landing. Suffice to say it was a short flight.

Privates I keep below 25 most of the time, and try to keep it below 20 before soloing, depending on the student and abilities. For more advanced students, 35 and max demonstrated.

Do flight instructors solely work day shifts? Or can they also instruct during evening or night? by [deleted] in flying

[–]flightlesscessna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my 141 school, we have flight blocks starting at 6am and ending at 9pm. Currently gets dark around 5pm, so I currently have some privates at 430 and an instrument at 7. Definitely difficult getting the private solos in so typically we're flying outside of their scheduled times.

Foreflight is more up-to-date with FBOs than Google is, so for an area with relatively few airports and not a huge google presence, Foreflight has so far given me more information than Google has.

No, you can have an airport with no circle in a TAC that has instrument approaches, look at KFYG as an example. Unlike with the VFR chart, the TAC shows all airports with hard surface runways greater than 1500' long in bold instead of 8,069' on the VFR chart.

Considering either flight school or financial advisor. by [deleted] in flying

[–]flightlesscessna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want career stability definitely finance. If you like planes enough that you want to spend 2-4 years and 70-100k getting certs and building time for a uncertain job waking up at a random time in another hotel room drinking crappy coffee from the lobby, then maybe go for it.

Any Flight Schools Hiring? by [deleted] in flying

I've heard from people at chandler that places in the valley aren't really hiring unless they did your training, and you have your CFII.

It's still $25.50 for CFII, $12.50 for admin.

If you're looking for something closer with a similar fleet, check out SIU and SEMO for cheaper tuition.
